  1. Sorry if you read this tomorrow Sounds like an interesting one, Battle for Mirbat and oil. Don't recall much specific mention of defending oil in the past. Hoping to see some vehicle imagery of what they were cutting about in back then.
  2. I think the story goes that you can call it "Still" if anyone complains about Bennie. Surprised that no-one has mentioned the name "startyoubastard". My first one was called the Lardrover. Not sure if that was a typo of Landrover or Lardlover. I'll get me goat...
  3. I've just had a rant about this in the newsletter and have convinced myself that it shouldn't matter. Whether that will work I don't yet know and hope I'm not still ranting when I try IMHO this applies to V5 registration numbers and the Gubments efforts to stop them being made into silly styles and patterns etc by not only making their use illegal (no complaints there BTW) but by prosecuting anyone who actually supplies them. As far as I can see, you can't present a V5 for the vehicle number you want as it doesn't exist on a V5. Lets say the number is 74 GG 30. You don't want a registration number, you just want a particular pair of letters and 2 pairs of numbers in pressed metal so you can use it to identify something. You can't commit an offence of making a number plate that doesn't conform because no DVLA issued number is being used. For all they know it's how you identify your personal collection of horsebox trailers, you want it in metal as the horse has acquired a taste for acrylic. Just don't set the droid off with their rehearsed "you can't do it because... " scripts by telling them it's a registration number or a show plate. I can think of an example, say a vehicle is being given as a present, and it's brand spankers, sitting on the drive, big pink bow across the roof, and "Happy Birthday" is in place of the number plate for this occasion. Ask them where the offence is. In your case, you are 74, your initials are GG, and your waistline is 30, [you are most welcome ] All this legislation is bad enough but for some reason the Gubment wants to scare the living bejaysus out of the poor sods who try to earn a crust facilitating the ill conceived edicts. And wait until you are on the receiving end of one of them who has authority and powers to make you dance to their tune. I'm sorry, don't know what came over me... And, relax..... Sorry Mods, delete this if it got political Tell you what, even the dog has got up and gone and sat under the kitchen table, I must have been thumping this keyboard somewhat
  4. I've had 2 different types on the Land Rover, one has canvas/cotton braids moulded in, the other is slightly thicker but has no reinforcing braids. Easy to spot as the threads are visible where it's been cut to width. All of the solid rubber straps have snapped at some point or other, no pattern as to where, they just give up. The braided ones are still fine albeit a little worn now. I'd ask about that before committing to a purchase. I got the braided stuff from Graham Holding but have seen others with it at military shows. Mooching through ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AT48-SOLID-INSERTION-RUBBER-STRIP-50mm-x-3mm-x-2-5M_W0QQitemZ160294946834QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item160294946834&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318 Interesting to see some of the items found when searching on "rubber canvas strap".
  5. Best I can offer right now from Harrogate is help with collection and indefinite dry storage while you find someone to guide you through that process, assuming sellers want it off their premises etc. I can help with any preparation and packaging materials needed but will be useless at paperwork and formalities etc. For example, I could have it made ready for collection by a courier as part of the forwarding process. All the best
  6. Hi Clive Was going to offer commiserations and all that but I reckon if the Hornet has gone back and will be viewed regularly then it's a fitting accolade to your love and attention to your hobby. All the best
  7. I'd have liked to go down there from Yorkshire but not able to justify it for one day. Maybe next year. If anyone wants to share costs of a Transit size van and bring a motorbike as well. I'd put one or two in for display. All the best
  8. Wish I'd known you were taking pics, I'd have powdered me head...
  9. I'm going to regret admitting that I know how to clean a vehicle but there are a few tyre cleaners you can buy that work quite well. I used some, well, alright, I asked if I could use someone elses cleaner, of the foaming type. It worked brilliantly but did leave a bit of a bling finish. Very effective if the tyres are in good nick. I've used degreaser before, something like Flash floor cleaner powder liberally mixed in warm water and sprayed on using a cleaned out glass cleaner hand spray bottle. You can see the crud washing away. Left a really matt finish that didn't look as good as I'd hoped (especially if there are cracks and marks in the walls) but boy was it clean. I think the propriety cleaner showroom finish looks better than completely matt, regardless of tyre condition. I've just done some in preparation for Selkirk Rally and tried the degreaser first on some 9x16 bargrips before deciding on a bling finish. H&S nannies need to wear gloves at that degreaser concentration and be mindful of the mist and breathing it in, not nice. Also, a hosepipe or pressure washer to rinse tyres and surrounding area down as you go. That neatly leads into another subject, how clean do you really want your patio or driveway once you pressure wash graffitti of xxx and xxxxxxx into the concrete.
  10. Hi Mark EMLRA Forum admin usually waits for someone to get in touch by email when they originally register, kind of a crude spam filter All the best
  11. Just like the Pinkies had pre-Marshalls unit modded variants, is that a pre-Dougal? I'll get me duffel coat...
  12. I've got my fingers crossed that it all works out, looking forward to it. Was going to take the FFR 90 along but we bent it soon after leaving the Land Rover 60th at Gaydon, will take it if it's out of the workshops by then. Had some good feedback from groups that are going, should get a better idea this weekend at Elvington if any more are joining in.
  13. Evening all I've been contacted by a bloke called Rod Scott about an event he is organising at Newby Hall, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. It's a stones throw from the A1. He would like to invite anyone into re-enacting, or just vehicles etc, for the weekend of Sat 31st May/Sunday 1st June. I thought I'd post it here and spread the word. I'm certainly up for going as it is on my doorstep. Website here: http://www.airborneforceslimited.co.uk All the best
