Ah, good point - I'd assumed this was the receiver and there would be heat/IR from another source to pick up.
If this is a sender, could the receiver be as simple as a chap with IR goggles?
oooo. How about hot-air signals like smoke signals, or maybe bouncing the IR light from the cloud layer?
Or maybe microwave into the water droplets in the air (a poor mans troposcatter?)
Are you buying one? I'm not sure I'd drive a "new" vehicle that far without building up a bit of experience with it and learning the quirks.

You could mark out areas with either covert burners or ir lamps hat wouldn't be seen to the naked eye. This could find you the safe path or maybe hidden supplies?

I picked up a 12x12 but hadn't appreciated quite how big and unwieldy it was. The side tent looked like a quick and easy option for a weekend show.
