  1. yep, yet another, ooh it weighs 10 tonne (with tyres, glass, oils etc) so scrap is £x therefore £x multiplied by 10 etc. What these folk always quote is the price for clean cast, not the price for mixed rubbish. True it still has a high price just in scrap, but £1800! no chance. I've chased another militant in as bad a condition, that owner has too many pound signs in his eyes for his own good. This example looks a neglected wreck, and will no doubt be a mammoth job to get right, you could break it for spares, but £1800 buys an awful lot of bits.
  2. Charlie's militant does have the modified bumper, i.e. Nato eye on front, but so did a few. It's the searchlight on the driver's side that reminded me of Charlie's.
  3. great pictures, I think the militant at auction is th one owned by Charlie Brown at Clitheroe, I'll ask him for his reg. My eyes might be playing up, does the BW photo show the militant without a N/s door handle? Also, all the artillery tractors must have been delivered with a box under the n/s rear body access door, but later it was removed and replaced with steps, as on mine, and on the colour picture above. On the rad, the cover looks to be fabric, on mine and later ones it seems to have been replaced with an aluminium one, which should sit just above the number plate. Interestingly, the one shown above has it missing, as does the militant owned by Charlie.
  4. what can you use? is it just Alcohol, or can i use Ethanol etc. I noticed last week when the air system wouldn't charge, the compressor had moved on its' sliding mount and the belts went slack, I had thought that it was one of those things, but perhaps the compressor was frozen and the belts had been unable to turn it, and it pulled the compressor in? I've always struggled to get these compressor mounting bolts tight on my own, trying to hold a socket on, and a spanner and wedge the compressor on your own can be a fine art.
  5. ...careful where you stop, so you can get going again, and take a shovel for when you get it wrong. Had to take the militant out last week ( car let me down) had a few interesting moments, usually with people pulling out in front or jumping into my stopping space. Ice on both sides of the windscreen can be interesting as well. Had a portable gas heater, which I'd park up and run for 10 mins to get everything warmer and dry, then set off again.
  6. is the mirror white or silver? I have some new ones and they are silver.
  7. fantastic pics, particularly the 2nd one, is that a cover on the rad? Do you have an more info on the regiment etc?
  8. looking good, where did you get the conduit from? Mine's in pieces.
  9. I sent them a snotty email, but I doubt I'll hear back. Seems like a trick some try, to get money from those who don't pay enough attention to their personal affairs. I re-read the renewal small print: if the policy renews, which it would do automatically unless you have cancelled prior to renewal, it would cost you £40 to cancel within 14 days, after 14days - a small fortune, £166 commision, £25 arrangement fee, £40 cancellation charge, along with a proportion of the total for the amount the vehicle was on cover. So it would seem that by the time most would get their statements and notice, it would be too late and they would have to pay out just to leave. Also I think it's very poor that I received my renewal less than 7 days before the policy expires, what if it was lost in the post etc? It gives me little time to renew. Interestingly, on the price comparision sites, last month I got some quotes, this week I got some more. This week's quotes were all higher than last month in all but a couple of instances. Seems strange that when you actually receive your renewal and then attempt to get a quote, the price has gone up? or am I just paranoid
  10. Just got my car renewal, it's jumped from £390 last year, to £951 this year. No bumps, car is a year older, now have 9 years discount. If I pay by direct debit, the total price rises to £1188! APR 46% What a flaming rip off. The company? Well I'll give you a clue.. you go to their 'garage' if you have perfectly good shockers on your car, but believe them when they say that they all need replacing.. in their adverts their staff can play the piano, hypnotise small kids etc.. they had a snappy song (apparently you couldn't get better they said). Pull the other one
  11. Hi Dave, welcome to the forums, don't be afraid to ask, no such thing as a stupid question on here
  12. - big thank you to those who attended, it was very much appreciated by the organiser, who asked me to pass on his thanks. Our presence today went down very well with the organisers and helped them achieve their goals; to raise money for this worthy appeal and to remind the public of the past efforts the armed forces have, and continue to make on our behalf. Hope you all got home safely. BTW, I do agree with you Duncan, those cheerleaders were awful
  13. website with some details of the event : http://www.localheroscastleford.webs.com/ event is held on the Queen's Park playing fields, Ferrybridge Road, Castleford, WF10 4JR as mentioned before, there are facilities to camp, facilities to make a cup of tea etc, toilets, local shops nearby and security laid on so you can sleep soundly in your tent I shall be arriving at about 4pm on the Friday with the BBQ and some beer, and will be staying until Sunday morning as the event doesn't finish until about 9pm on Saturday with a firework show.
  14. thanks chaps, I'm going to take it all off for a good look, we go to Durham this weekend, you know it's going to let me down if I do nothing, and it'll probably be raining as well I will let you know what I find.
  15. when I try to start the militant, first attempt the starter always sounds as though the batteries are flat, but on the second attempt it fires straight up as normal. I've checked the leads to the starter, all are clean and tight, the batteries are fully charged, so I'm wondering if the starter itself is suspect, i.e. is something requiring a good clean, or is it about to let me down with a more serious internal fault? Any ideas, it's a bit big to push if the starter packs up completely
  16. thanks for the offer of the floor, shame it's as bad as mine Are you leaving it all polished? with that and all the brass you'll be geting the wheels chromed next! Pm me if you want my phone number etc, to drop in enroute to your wedding.
  17. Holy cow, you'll need sunglasses to sit inside the cab! looks like you've got it well in hand, I got the air valve of the same militant you stripped, courtesy of Nathan. ( still think it should be green ) Do your doors fit properly? mine don't sit snug, but bow out slightly at the bottom, need a couple of flat blokes to stand on each end to bend them back into shape.. BTW, do you have the old floor left? the part under the driver's seat, mine has a corner knocked off. The driver's seat base in your picture is correct, I have a seat frame somewhere, but I suppose you got one from the scrap militant?
  18. yes you're more than welcome to call in, just give me a shout beforehand
  19. Hi there! Firstly they say the camera never lies, my militant looks ok in a photo, but in the flesh, well Your cab looks in very good nick, particularly at the front by the windscreen, mines all parting company. You could still run her without a back body, which wouldn't look too bad, the back on mine is rotten, and I had considered removing it, running without and doing the body up indoors. I know what you mean by a civvy paint job, given that your body is missing, but come on now, you can't beat green Let me know what you're short of, I might have or know the bits you need. BTW you'll find most peope on here obliging, so just ask Just looking at your pics, I think I have some brackets so you can put your headlights in the right place, all that wiring on the floor looks familiar, mine was all pulled out when I got it, every wire yellow, and most with no markings legible! Do you have your clocks and start panel? I have a spare of both if you're interested, also the frame that they sit in which bolts to the front of the cab. Do you have the bonnet side and bonnet top? If you can, get it on the road, do a few shows, then, in my experience, people will come forward with the stuff you need if they see the wagon in the flesh, much better than trying to reach people with your pleas with the wagon tucked away in a barn somewhere. Do you have a manual for it, I can copy you a few pages if you let me know what you need. BTW, I still have the wooden former in the garage that I made for the lower corner panels, your O/S front look a bit thin, is it? Let me know if you want a panel making.
  20. Nice event, the paper is wrong though, what a surprise! The guy got out when he shouldn't have, assuming that the lorry was parked up, even though the driver always told them when they were safe to dismount, he was then run over by the driver who was moving forward to park up, he was unaware that anyone had got out. The chap is currently in Bradford Royal Infirmary, with a fractured arm, three broken ribs, a gash to his head and a facial injury that will require plastic surgery, hope he makes a speedy recovery. Incidently, the air ambulance had a BBC cameraman on board, perhaps you might see the whole event on TV someday? Let's hope they stick to the facts.
