  1. I've never owned a Scott Rik but have definitely heard of chain and sprocket gearboxes. It must be like derailleur gears in a box?

    Ron

Hi Ron...hope you had good Xmas and New Year? Things must be quiet in the workshop if your talking about Velo gear changes ..LOL!

Based on my understanding...Velocette invented and patented the positive stop gear change in the 1920's but the original version was external to the gear box. You can see this on late 1920s cammy singles ( like my 1929 KSS) . They then in the mid 1930s internalised the positive stop mechanism on bikes like pre war MAC which became MDD and MAF models during the war. Having improved the system on their own bikes they licenced the old external deign to Scott to make some cash from the patent.

You can see above the mechanism is the round bit behind the gearlever attached to the top outside of the gearbox. If you look at pictures of Scotts you will see a similar arrangement.

With regard to chain and sprocket gear boxes I have seen articles in the classic bike mags with bikes that have these and they are usually one chain and a pair of sprockets per gear, the required gear sprockets engaged by dogs rather than a single chain and derailluer system.

    Hope this helps.

  2. When applying for an age related number for a 1940 British ex military vehicle with no previous log book tax disc etc I know I need dating cert from MVT or similar and new vehicle registration form from DVLA but does it have to be mot,ed as I just want to get a V5 for it prior to restoring and will not be putting back on the road for some time in the future after all the work done. .Any thoughts or comments please? :-)

  3. i have his contact details as there was talk of bringing them in on the covenanter recovery but to be honest the less guys involved with that one then the sooner we'll have it out

Agree with you regards " too many cooks "....but could you please try and find room for someone half decent with a video camera so we armchair enthusiasts who are following your progress with great interest can see how you get on please? Not expecting a documentary but it would really great to see how it goes on site and would be good for the record. ;)

  4. Re: AMARAPOORA as a Hospital Ship

Just would like to respond to say that my wife's aunt was a nurse on this ship; in fact her aunt married the Chief Officer (I think that's correct title). I knew her well, but not her husband who died some years before. She was an extremely spirited, fun and resourceful lady. She has also now passed on, but she left her typed 'life-story' which includes a lot about life on board Amarapoora; and that's quite exciting (and revealing...). We have one original framed ship photo in the family although I discovered other info on-line since (including the Cpt. Hobson journeys post-war). We are only recently getting round to transcribing her story to MSWord. I think it should be in the public domain but will need to look into best way of publishing it. I could possibly give you a snippet if relevant to your enquiry. Unfortunately she substituted fictitious names for crew and staff, so I may not be able to identify specific people unless you give identifiable posts and duty dates. She was on board at Scapa Flow dodging the fleet bombings and dealing with injured navy crews in wards and theatre, and as a young nurse had to see some bad outcomes...

Any more news on this ? A copy of the "life story" would give me a flavour of my Dads war as a senior sick berth attendant on this hospital ship! I should have asked him more about it when he was still alive ! Let that be a lesson to anyone who knows a veteran from WW2..try gently to see if they want to pass on some info .. but do not push if they don't. Many Thanks Andy B

  8. i spoke with the buyers agent and he told me it was the nicest tank he's driven, which i was quite pleased to hear.

it's no accident that i've picked up a couple cents to replace it but i doubt they will be anywhere as nice to drive, same engine, steering and gearbox but twice the weight. i might have to go looking for the elusive rickmansworth buried cromwell before i'll be satisfied

Rick .. enlighten us heathens about this ?????

Have also fitted new rubber seals to the steering linkage, a job I should have done a while ago but have only just got around to, and have greased all my nipples a lovely job !!!!!

Popped down to Ross on sat to our local auto jumble and though the weather was foul managed to find some goodies not much Bedford related but some nice NOS. levers for the Norton and a nicely sectioned mills bomb.

Hi Jez Whats the data plates ?....( Passenger wooden door ost ...hint hint ;););) )

  11. Final Drives are now all stripped and the housings are being processed. The second pictures shows the main shaft that goes through the final drive and this outer flange is what the brake drum attaches to. Main housings and sprockets are blasted and given a 2-pot epoxy prime. This is our special brew , that is green in colour, so any wearing of the paint surface when the vehicle is in use would only show green. This paint product was used on our America's Cup yachts, so is tried and tested. Great for a DD Tank! Cheers from The Tank Factory.

Absolutely blown away by your work ! Is inspiring me to crack with my own humble project! Please advise make and specificaton on the coloured primer you use..it sound like a great idea!

    Thanks
