  1. In the run up to D-Day, I think I've read that Div signs and AoS signs were to be removed for security reasons. Every unit was allocated a 5-digit number as an identifier. Looking at many pictures, this seems to have been painted on the front offside and rear nearside over three coloured bars. These three bars are each separate and are not part of a standard AoS sign. Pictures showing this include the picture of a Morris Utility heading a Golden Arrow radio station convoy and the picture of airborne jeeps - with their lightweight trailers stacked on top of them - and QLs ( QLR shows this marking) on board an LST in transit as well as a number of pictures in the new Tankograd book on British Military Trucks I think this is separate from the strips required to be painted on to vehicles to indicated their preparedness for wading stage - but then again it might be linked - does anybody know more - I can't find any mention of this in the standard references. I am interested in the Early British Jeep modifications - particularly prior to the fiment of Jerricans primarily these relate to: sheet metal and bar stowage (with triangular wooden block on footstep) for 2 gall POW tins on sloping part of front wings - often seen later adapted to take Jerricans fitment of convoy light on rear crossmember with rotary switch below spare wheel adjacent to existing light (see Farley Book 2 page 55 for shape of bracket) relocation of front BO lights onto front wings fitting of rifle clip onto front windscreen apron fitment of hooks hanging down from rear crossmember - any ideas what for - could they be for fitment of stretcher carrying frame perhaps??? curious addition bolted to spare wheel carrier - any ideas what for? these can be variously seen in Farley Book 1 pages 85,92,93,94. Farley Book2 pages 44,54 with official drawings on page 55 All these modifications are covered by Mechanisation Inspection department drawings from July 1942 - in the series C.I.M.(B) 1087/... Does anybody know where I could find copies of these drawings? Any help advice or direction gratefully received thanks sk
  3. well Tuesday actually Late, wooden-bodied Sd.Kfz 7 on a trailer behind an Army MAN heading south on the A12 near Yoxford in Suffolk
  4. In " The Landships from Lincoln" there is reference to a Mk IV being used to demolish a house in (IIRC) Worcester in the 1920s. It fell through into the cellars and as there was no way of extracting it, it was just left there and entombed. Also heard a rumour about a buried Comet at Ranby prison. Ranby used to be the base for one of the Tank Transporter Companies and the Comet had been a gate guardian. sk

  6. Mine was screwed into the windscreen skin - on the drivers side, facing the driver - you could see the four nuts on the outside of the skin
