Pete You are correct Solex carb is fitted. Being a novice and most of my work is done via mauals and the like how do I check that it is jetted correctly? Many thanks

Many thanks Just an update the plugs were cleaned, vehicle taken out for about a 5 mile run but the plugs were once again quite balck, I ve added a few photos of the carb, the garage stank of petrol once back in so I think the issue is there somwhere; thoughts about a rebuild of the carb. Is it a straight forward job. Does it just need a good tune up and a bit of TLC instead. Cheers

May be a stupid question however over the winter period I have been turning my jeep engine over for about 10-15 minutes twice/three times a month; I just push it out of the garage and let it run. Today I was able to take it out for run and it was coughing and backfiring like a good un. Came back and had a look at various things and found the plugs were heavily blackened. After cleaning the plugs and cleaning bits up a second road run was perfect, SO is it a simple fact that the jeep was just run statically or is there some underlying issue?

I had some work done at the beginning of last year by Contact Engine Services Ltd Brierley Hill, recommended by a large jeep supply establishment in the Midlands and found them excellent to deal with and knew the engine inside and out. If needs be pm for contact details. Hoppy

Watcher has just jogged my memory, during my time on FH 70 in both regiments AWDATS was the only system that we used and line was the primary mode of communications; 349's were used on the gun position to pass data from survey to gun when coming into action and as a back up for line; they were also used for guns sentires. I never worked on a towed gun with BATES so can not quote what equipment was used, all I can say is that we never used anyhting other than the 349 on the gun positions, some Gun Line Section Commanders may have had a 351 in manpack role but as they were on foot working between the gun postions the 349 was used in preference.

Have done a bit of work on Google; the radios in use on the gun line were PRC 349's. Each number 1 (Sgt/Bombadier) was issued one as first line comms. Second line was the good old tannoy system basic speaker and telephone line. One of the first jobs to do was run out the line from the gun position to the command post. Christmas tree is blocking the cupboard where all the old photos are kept so I will have to wait to get at them and see what there is.

Having worked on FH70 for 4-5 years prior to re role with AS90 we only used small chest mounted radios, I forget what model but we never had anything bigger, certainly not 351. The gun tractors and limbers (Foden 6x6) were never fitted out either. BATES was coming into service and was initially used on it's issued frame, however like most things we came up with our own ideas and REME began to knock frames up that were attached to the trail arms; one practice was that we would 'liberate' large RAF cargo nets and when travelling coming out of action all the crew kit webbing prisim ammo shelter etc was carefully placed in the net which was slung between the trail arms. We also used to hang large boxes (Haycon) on the trails where we kept all the cooking kit rations etc. We also made use of the space around the trunnions to secure the cam net with kit being stored down around the saddle as well. These practices/kit were quite common within FH 70 Regiments, I served on FH 70 both in 47 Field and 3 RHA. On the introduction of AS 90 all our vehicle fleet, guns etc either were sent to reserve stock or to TA Regiments who may have had their own modifications/equipment. 'Bomb Hunters' by Sean Rayment following Britains bomb disposal in Afganistan.

Have posted some pictures (hopefully) of a little item I picked up a while ago, nice undamaged compass. Is this a make that would have been used on military vehicles and the like? Also it does work but it appears that it is only half full of liquid. Is this an issue; if it is is there an easy repair? Many thanks

Time is now upon me to start on one or two little niggles on the jeep. Ever since I have had the jeep the wiper arms are loose, flap in the wind and don't seem to sit up out of the way like others that I have seen. I resorted to a bit of string and tying the handle up out of the way. I have taken the unit off and would like to know if there should be an insert or something that keeps the wiper arms tight to the screen or not?

Bit of an update, spent this afternoon tinkering ran the jeep up initially bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust with a bit of moisture present; after 10-15 mins it all seemed to clear, tweeked the head nuts again and then..........nothing. Did a road run not a plume of smoke at all HOWEVER The moisture that I noticed at the start was petrol and whilst stationary there was a subtle smell of petrol from the exhaust and a couple of times the jeep just cut out; is it time for a good tune up?

Right Today refitted new filter/oil and coolant with a tub of K-seal mixed in with the coolant; run engine up on tick over with no issues for about 5 minutes and the torqued up as per manual, just as it appeared that my luck was in fumes appeared again. There were no bubbles in the coolant and overall after cooling down the coolant level has not dropped; also no coolant in the breather pipe/overflow. Oil level fine not a trace of anything else. Not a great deal of moisture present from the exhaust, I held a bit of clean dry card up against it. Last time I ran the engine up there was more water present than in your average British summer. Engine in itself is still running fine, no misfires/stuttering etc, run for about 10 minutes today. Pictures of what is happening attached; I hope.
