  1. Hi Wayno what's this I hear your going into farming ? call by when your passing I'm doing some preventative on the Norton at the mo which means things have slowed a bit on the MW.

Not quite mucka. Its a small idea that evolved into a big one once Henri got involved. The irony is that it's Ex Military anyway, which I didn't plan.

It also has transpired that this model is not very abundant either, so may have stumbled upon a future asset for the collection.

This one is running and needs a few cosmetic items, which is handy as I must get stuck into the Pig and Rover8FFR.

I am popping in to see them both on my travels next week with work, so will get a bit of a push from my conscience to get on with it.

Your resto is looking great though m8y :)

  2. It is now believed that these wheels were standard on the MF20 industrials and that the lugs are MOLCON and were brazed on for other wheels or attachments.

The 2203 has wet brakes Richard as you say that makes it different to the 135, but more in keeping with a 65/165 model??

The part numbers are shown on the axle casing, so if anyone can confirm this please as I don't have those parts books.

Originally power steering would have been fitted and I now know what is believed to be the steering pump

Does anyone know what the picture shows next as it looks like a lever is missing from a splined rod / linkage on the rear axle

  3. Hi Wayne,

I have a feeling your tractor has a MF165 rear axle, to me it looks like it has inboard disc brakes, and the part number on the axle housing tallies with a 165. That being so your wheels will be a larger PCD on the studs. Industrials were often beefed up in this manner. They are not ordinary 135's with different bonnet and colour scheme!

    regards, Richard

Thanks Richard I did think perhaps the rear axle was from a heavier / stronger MF tractor, but wasn't 100% as the images or the net are cot conclusive about these things.

I do take your point about the MF135, but a lot of the tin and dials and the engine was where I sorta was coming from.

Finding a manual for this will be the next bit of fun.

I do have a 135 / 148 service manual, so that's a start. I will have to fill in the other parts with perhaps 165 info and the like.

    All good fun though :)

She will look better with some green paint. New lights and the Exmoor cage removed though.

  4. Guys

Any ideas on these rear rims please or axle as they are not MF135, which shares some parts etc.

Wheel PCD's are much larger than normal MF/ David Brown wheels.

Also I now know it's registration 01FV05 dates back to 68/69 and that the farmer bought it direct out of logistics at Ashchurch. So officially I am the second owner after the MOD.

    Always grateful for assistance.

  5. Re. "but an odd roll / protection cage that may not be original?"

We had a Petrol paraffin 35 at work (from new) that had a loader fitted. At the time the owners ran an orchard and after a large stump bounced from the muck fork onto the bonnet above the grill then onto the steering wheel before missing the driver.... the tractor was fitted with a very similar roll cage. slight diff. mountings (front legs onto a channel that ran under the g/box) There was a plate riveted to off side rear brace plate stating for mf35 and mf35x plus other details etc.

    Gerry

Gerry thanks and that accords with a note from Richard Farrant. He has advised it was an Exmoor cage and used for such work where something a little more slender was required such as orchards and hop farms etc.

Your note, further confirms this, albeit the farm it was purchased from does not farm such products now. However I can ask the current owners as the farm is still in family hands since the Father passed away some years back.

The last thing it did I believe was running a 'Slurry' pump ?????

    Cheers

  6. I managed to get the girl running after being sat in the field for a year.....

    Video to follow.

However some other pics so you guys can help me define if she was a rear forklift or front loader forklift.

Looking at the bracket underneath at the front and also the supports for the roll cage I suspect she was a front loader with forks..... ???

Oh and of course a Happy New Year to all forum friends ;)

  7. Hi Richard, sorry yes point taken, a little too much shorthand!

I looked at the pipes thinking maybe 'constant pumping' out and return via a spool maybe for the forks.

Over a number of years we ran 203's, 35's and 40's and I have to confess I came across one of these some years ago and just assumed it was a digger with all the framework removed, never gave it a second glance. It was only recently I found out it was a model in it's own right! :) Oopps!

Now why does the name Ben Turner come to mind???

    :nut::nut::nut::D:D:D:D:D:wow::wow::wow::wow:

  8. I believe I saw one of these in Bill Simmonds yard at Great Bentley several years ago . That one had the front end forklift and balance weights on the rear wheels (but I could be remembering incorrectly).

I had an M-F 2130 industrial tractor which we bought at one of the last Chilford Hall sales , I think that had the same engine as the one here .

Engine is the standard Perkins 3 cyl Diesel.... Or so I am told :-)

  9. Hi Wayne,

If as I surmise from the data plate, that it was supplied as a basic tractor, then it will not need much to put it back to original, one back in DBG, it will look fine.

The Exmoor frame was designed for hop gardens, vineyards and fruit orchards and would fit narrow version tractors as well, they were less likely to snag the trees or bushes.

Quick Question... Were they DBG all over or was it just tinware???????

Early 135 / Industrials were yellow over grey and later 2203 / 35's all yellow like a JCB.

Can you remember that far back Richard??

  10. Hi Wayne,

I did my apprenticeship and early working life at a Massey Ferguson main dealer, so quite up on these and also worked on MF when I was later employed by the army. I think looking at your data plate that the one shown was a basic tractor, we used to get a lot of various models come in. I know a chap who deals in small Fergies and he has an ex-army 35 and two TE20's, one diesel and the other a TVO engine. They were used for general duties, like ground work around depots, etc.

The cab frame is an Exmoor, and likely fitted by a private owner.

    regards, Richard

Richard thank you as always..... It's been sold as a running old tractor, but I spotted the plate by chance and then got curious. The fact it is ex-military is a bonus in my eyes and the intention will be to see her in the correct colours and with her ERM showing at a local country fair or two.

My little lad is tractor mad and I thought it would be a bit of cheap fun for him and me as he aspires into landies and PIGs.

It may be one to hang onto for the future. I am told by someone into old Fergies that these old Industrial types are getting less known at shows as everyone has a grey fergie 20 or a mint 35. Also they just tend to rot away and get scrapped.

Any info about it is great just to get is tidied up and back to some normality.

I must confess I hate the roll cage! Probably sell that on to A N Other.

I think she will scrub up quite nice though with little effort and not stop me from getting on with the PIG and Rover 8FFR.

Thanks for all the help :D

  11. Wow that's useful and a bit for me to check out. I thought I took a rear picture as it does have a 3 point linkage and PTO.

There is also a hydraulics hose for something.

    Really appreciate the information.

Given that this has been on this farm for about 30 odd years I suspect it has had some mods over time...

I will upload some more pictures over the next few non festive days when we attend to the Neds.....

    Thanks very much.

  12. Richard

I have seen a couple of pictures for the Rear forklift MF203, but the front ends are different. Namely grille and light positions

I found an old picture on an ex-services page that had the front loader arms and forks, but looks like an older Massey 35 type tractor.

The images with the rear mast look intriguing and I wonder what this little Fergie I have spotted had originally. Looking where the roll cage is bolted at the front looks a lot like the front loader mounting plate position I have seen on an old 35 on the local farm.

  13. OK guys thought I would close this off having now registered the Jeep.

I'm pleased to say it was an anti climax and straight forward.

Its now handled by post to Swansea not your local office. No MOT is needed if its an older exempt vehicle.

    I had to send -

    • V55/5 - Just fill in the bits the guidance notes asks for

    • A Utility Bill (proof of address)

    • Age verification letter from MVT

    • Copy of drivers licence (proof of id)

    • Insurance Certificate on chassis number (Needs to be full on the road cover not garage policy)

    • Cheque for £55

If the car was imported outside the EU -

    • Customs form stating import taxes paid

    • Original log book if you have it.

A week later I had a Reg number and tax disc :cheesy::cheesy:

Is that correct ??? Part of the problem I had with my PIG was that they wanted to view it and I explained the Pig was not roadworthy and not easily transportable. In the end I got a credit note. I had of course obtained the Insurance (on Chassis No) and age verification letter from MVT etc. If this is now done via post as you say then that is a massively better exercise. PS! Yes I still need to sort it, but whilst in storage it hasn't been a life or death situation.
  14. Having got the engine out of my Saladin I figure the petrol tanks would be a good next step. There's nothing obviously wrong with them, apart from one perished/corroded connection (pipe wasn't connected), but no doubt there's something nasty inside them. So I wonder if I could get some advice regarding cleaning, de-sludging and coating the insides with some sort of sealer. There are products on the web but I'm not sure if they are the way to go.

    James

James I would check if they leak first. If they are sound and not a large sieve, then a product called Marine Clean available from Frost Automotive in the UK (other suppliers on your side made be available) will be ideal to deep clean the internals etc. That will remove surface rust and other lacquers that have accrued over the years. If it does leak the the same manufacturer / supplier does a tank resealing kit, which has proved to work. However the instructions must be followed rigorously and time and patience given to get the best possible results. I hope that helps and there are many threads on the forum using the above mentioned solution. From memory the product manufacturer is POR15 http://www.frost.co.uk/
