  1. As I understood there was No reserve on any lots just a starting price.

We were also told that all vehicles that were on the video running/driving, were all using external fuel tank (although not possible to see on all vids) this was due to insurance. No fuel SHOULD have been in main tanks. All batteries were also removed. I may/could be easily lead but thats seems sensible.

Hell of a job bump starting the Sherman......

  2. The market rate for an average restored WLF with a petrol engine in the UK is around £12k - £14. Maybe a bit more for a really nice one.

Lots 8 & 9 both went for £18,724 and £15,789 respectively incl. the 40% and both need money spent to properly restore them. I am basing my comments on what is shown in the photos.

Lot 8: M1A1. wrong front bumper, extra lights and reflectors added, wrong mirrors, missing pioneer tools, bars added under rear body, missing speedo. Est. £850 in parts to rectify.

Lot 9: M1A1. running on external fuel tank (tanks are prone to rotting out), wrong tyres, missing Sirenlite, wrong air gauge, wrong speedo. Est. £2900 in parts to rectify.

Lot 16 is an M1. I'd be interested to know what this fetched. Wrong cab fitted (this would have to be fabricated from scratch), running on external fuel tank, modified air system, wrong tyres, extra brackets and cable reelers added, missing spare wheel. Est. £7850 to rectify.

There is no shortage of these trucks on the market so why pay over market rate? Hopefully there were elements not visible in the photos which made them more appealing.

    Thank you for your reply.

  3. I'm not sure whether the WLF's were good prices or not, although a lot of vehicle for about £ 17k .

What do the WLF owners on here think ?

What I found astounding was the halftrack.......I'm sure there must have been something special that only a few knew about it....maybe thats the one Patton pi**ed into the Rhine from in 1945.

We saw it and to the untrained eye it looked like a lot of other halftracks I have seen....looked after but 106000 euro i just dont see that.

  4. We popped over for a day out.

A few brits there (sorry Howard I would have loved to met you) but not many.

People were looking at the vehicles BUT my impression was mainly Dutch/Belguim dealers looking at the parts and spares.

Auction fever ?..........I'm not sure..... but I am sure that lots of these parts will appear at War&Peace at an "inflated price.

People knew just what they where looking at/for and working out their margin........

I'm not moaning, just what i saw .Of course the Sherman wont be a bargain....but how many are these days. Although at the price being banded around it would have been nice to have some internal pictures of it on display.

  5. Whilst we are all very sad at what happened in France lets look at this in a logical way..........

What would the French do IF THEY were to have something imposed on them they did not like.....

THEY would take direct action, the "Champs" in Paris would become grid locked as 100's/1000's of "101 st" Hotchkiss jeeps parked up with the onwners/driver shouting "NON"

Can you imagine Whitehall full of Jeeps, Gmc, Halftracks,Landrovers (the list goes on) but you get the idea.

Sign as many bits of paper, or online, But signing/talking did not stop our fuel hitting the pound per litre level, HOWEVER a couple of days blocking Calias harbour by a few small fishing boats made the French goverment rethink their plan on fuel prices........

I have a couple of deacts, and would be very sad to loose them, I gather from a few posts on here and on another forum there are some people that will loose vasts amount of money......bit like the stockmarket crash in the 30's I suppose.....

  6. Hi Steve,

DVLA have a set of guidance notes to accompany the V55/5 which seem to be a well-kept secret, but if you get that it tells you a lot about what needs to be completed. You do not need to fill in anything other than the basics. The complex stuff like NOX emissions is only for more modern vehicles. Fill in whatever you can and leave the rest blank.

If it is genuinely 1973 it will have to be registered as a a 'Historic Vehicle' and will be zero-rate tax.

It is exempt from type approval due to age.

It will need an MoT due to its age. You are entitled to drive it to and from a pre-booked MoT without registration as long as it is insured and roadworthy. For the MoT it will need front seatbelts and the rear lights will need to be sorted as the American arrangement of flashing is unacceptable. It is not too bad a job to re-wire to achieve this.

Note that it does not require windscreen washers as the windscreen can fold down.

Mike, just out of interest how would this work with say, a 1961 Hotchkiss......which would also need an mot.

  7. I attended By-gone days show in the New Forest in the summer and met The late Lord Montagues son, we talked about shows and he told me he wanted to resurrect Trucks & troops and make it bigger, I told him Rex was giving up and there may be an opening for a new show at Beaulieu.

I for one don't attend war & peace mainly due to distance and cost, but if Beaulieu could come back im sure that would be more attractive for lots of reenactors and vehicle owners, I for one would sign up for that!

    Colin

I went to Trucks & Troops a few years ago, great setting, but as I remember nowhere near the scale of W&P in either vehicles or trader's. I cant remember the cost but I do recal having to pay the full amount to enter as if I were going to the musem....which of course is great.

I'm sure there are other very good shows around, YWE,Wartime in the Vale, to name just a couple.

Will the new owners of W&P take on board any of the comments from this forum, I doubt they will, because as Baz48 says it's commercial venture, there to make money.......and thats why most of us go to work...to make , money......I think;)

  8. War and Peace show means a lot of different things to many many people.

I think you need to ask yourself a question what does it mean to you ?

Here is part of what it means to me, its a chance to have a week away from outside pressure's, I meet old freinds and make new ones. I get the chance to drive our mv's for a whole week. I pick up bits and piece,s from the stalls ( the amount I save on postage MORE than covers my entrance fee)

Do I pretend that I take our vehicles there for the general public.....no I don't, our small group does not have the pleasure of one of the "prime locations" which is allocated to some. For that reason I am comfortable in leaving the show when I am ready.

I dont have an issue with what is really quite a small fee for an entire week of entertainment.

I don't NEED the toilet or showers but do use them and I still do not understand why when some people are away find the need to sh*t up the walls and on the floor, I can only think those people live like pigs at home.

So if a levy is required to clear up after said animals then so be it.

  9. I never have and still don't understand some peoples reluctance to pay a few quid for upto 10 days camping including entrance to a show,

If you think £25 is a p*ss take what about stoneleigh £10 for the day.......come on fella's get real.

if you aint got the money, I'm sorry, if your just plain tight then shame on you.

What really make me laugh is people saying how many vehicle they take, which I assume they own, then moan about a few quid...........

  10. Any modern 90W hypoid.. whatever brand you like.

The manual initially wanted just 90W gear oil in the tranny/trans and 90W EP in the diffs.

But modern EP gear oil is safe on yellow metal (brass synchro rings/bearing) so no worries.

When I rebuilt my GPW gearbox, I was told by two highly respected restorers NOT to use ANY hypoid in gerabox/tranfer case.I used as instructed SAE110.

I'm no expert, so I just do/use as reccommended and I must say that my gearbox is as sweet as a nut....

I'm not sure about diffs, that comes later......

  11. I was a member with Autohome for around 4 years whilst I drove my Ward LaFrance and living van to various shows.

For the last few years I have been using my S26 unit and low loader carrying the Chieftain ARRV. Gross train weight 82 tonnes. Autohome are pretty good - but not that good!

If I came a cropper with that outfit A Long Recovery is on my speed dial!

If I were still driving the Ward to shows, I'd still be with Autohome.

As said, I've never had any issue with Autohome and I think they are good value for money!

    Markheliops

Thank you for your answer, I now understand that is some weight......;)

  12. I have always used Autohome and can only report their service as excellent.

I blew an engine on the Ward La France pulling the Love Trailer and they came out, hitched me up and took me home without any extra charges.

    Twice as it happens.

Failing that, I know some heavy owners use RAC Commercial as a cover.

Paid by the hour but at least you know you won't be left at the side of the road.

What's your recovery firm Paulob1 - I'll stick in my phone just in case as I'm not with Autohome anymore.

    Regards

    Markheliops.

Out of interest and the fact you are singing the praises of Autohome why are you not with them now ?

Not a loaded question just interested.

  13. someone was looking for 9.00x20 tyres, we got 13 cannot find the thread any more how was or is looking ?

    Hi Peter,

It was me looking for them. Would you pm me details please.

    thanks

    Gary

  14. Modern rules and regulations? We run a recovery business we know the rules and regulations thanks. We are not offering an illegal service...there is always someone.

I will offer the service to those who have taken an interest. Just let me know if anyone else wants to join...

I dont think he was trying to be dufficult. I did't read it that he implied you were offering an "illegal service" just that things are not maybe as easy as they used to be.

  15. I think its a fine line between the two.

In all cases the vehicle needs to be safe to drive, my feeling is that SOME not all of those owner's who love that "in service, patina,it tells a story look" really have no idea as to how safe it really is. I really wish I had taken some pictures of a jeep I saw at a local show last week, it was dismal to say the least.

Before I get bombed I do stress it is only SOME owner's that need to "look in the mirror"

  16. I dont want to state the obvious but this is an electric motor. Its a natual source of heat even if running efficiently

I'm an ex qualified sparks, the amount of problems caused by "tinkering" horrifies me sometimes.

Get it some where that a GOOD rewind company can have a look, they will understand the quality of a British motor.

Please do not be tempted by the cheap and "nasty" far eastern "snake oil"
