  1. I've been collecting old aircraft instruments for form a small diorama to go with my jeep, but one of the things to be careful of is radiation! Many instruments prior to 1950, have the pointers and numbers painted with Radium 226 to make them show in the dark. With a half-life of 1600 years, they are likely to be 'hot' for some time yet! I bought myself a Geiger Counter to check the instruments before use. Some are not much above background radiation, and are considered safe for display so long as the instrument case and glass are intact. I recently read that many American Military vehicles also used Radium on their instrument dials. Has anyone had their vehicle instruments checked or even thought about this potential problem? Steve
  2. The 100th Museum at Thorpe Abbotts is indeed on the Bolero Tour. The museum is free, and run by people who care that the deeds and actions of the 100th BG aren't forgotten. The museum started in 1977 when a group of locals banded together to restore the empty abandoned tower. Pictures inside the tower show how much work was involved in the creation of the museum. It is considered one of the best museums covering the 8th Air Force, and has a large collection of artifacts and personal items, many donated by 100th BG veterans and their families. There are many displays with uniforms, flight clothing, equipment and documents, along with many original photos of life around the base. Steve

  10. This is low flying in a proper airplane!! Real airplanes have props and a wheel at the back! The flying was performed for the 1968 film "1000 Plane Raid". It's even more spectacular seeing the 'Buzz Job' in the film.
  11. Yep, my wife doesn't have a handbook either!!!!!!!
  12. This summer, I'm taking my jeep to the Ursel show in Belgium with the NE MVT. The rest of the gang are heading home after the show, but Lynne and I are driving on to Holland and staying another week. Other than the Bridge at Arnhem, what other WW2 sites do you think are worth a visit ( and where are they?? ) We are staying in Delft, apparently, so sites within a modest radius would be most suitable. Steve
  13. We often wonder why you bother!
