  1. Thanks very much for that guys. Just to go over the polarising thing a bit, the vehicle has been running fine since I finished rebuilding it in 2004, and I never polarized it then, so does this mean the generator has just become de-polarized sometime recently, how could this have happened? Swill, to go over the technique for this you say to disconnect all the wiring and strike the small terminal with a wire from the positive terminal on the battery, the small terminal is the earth on a Jeep, also if you've disconnected all the wiring, and strike it with one wire from the battery theres no circuit is there? Not questioning, just want to fully understand whats going on. Many thanks, Richard
  2. Further to the above after doing a bit of reading on the subject, is it necessary to polarize the generator and how would I do this? Richard
  3. My Jeep appears to be not charging. With the engine running, if I turn the lights on the Ammeter flicks into the negative side, so I presume that means the ammeter is working, but when I rev the engine, the ammeter is motionless. Under instruction from Tony Sudds I disconnected the two large terminals from the generator and bridged them, then with the engine running put a meter accross the bridged terminals and the negative terminal on the battery, this was supposed to produce 14 - 15 volts but I only got 0.30!! Can I presume from this that the generator needs looking at? The regulator is a 12 volt unit from a Mini mounted inside the original casing. Can the generator be tested further by connecting it up to run like a motor? I'm going to check the brushes in the generator, but any help will be greatfully recieved - shes got to be sorted in time for the Normandy trip. Thanks in advance, Richard
  4. I have two 6LWs which I intend to use to make one good 'un to fit in my Pioneer. Its not a problem i've heard of before, but when I get my two stripped down i'll let you know what they're like.
  5. Sorry, but the pics I thought I had of the Overloon M6 being restored.......I haven't.
  6. Jim, Its one of my all time must have vehicles, but I think its a bit of a pipe dream at the moment, i'm up to my eye balls with the ground up restoration of my Scammell Pioneer and I have an AEC Matador waiting its turn too. I would dearly like one for restoration, I like to take on project vehicles, the restoration is where I get the most enjoyment. In addition i've also recently had to move to a much smaller premises after being kicked out of the barn I was renting on an arable estate near me because they wanted the barn for 'other uses'. You sound as though you know of several. Richard
  7. Adrian, They are definatly not the same vehicle, this photo was only taken last year and I have recently made contact with Jim Osborne who says he still has his, it is as yet unrestored but he hopes to one day display it with his 8in gun. He is sending me some photos of it in its current condition which I will post when they arrive. The one I am pictured with used to be owned by a chap called Chet Krouse, (i think i got the spelling right), before being acquired by the marshall museum. I think I have some pics of its rebuild - i'll dig them out and post some. Richard
  8. Does anyone know of any Allis Chalmers M6 high speed tractors in existence?, its the big brother of the M4, weighing in at a respectable 36 tons and uses two of the engines used in the M4. The picture below is me with the one at the Marshall Museum in Overloon, Holland and I know of one other at the Indiana Military Museum. I have researched the subject quite a bit and can find no other survivors.
  9. No this one is owned by Terry Hounsell, that is how it came out of the army, and it has never been restored. On another note, i've been looking at the wiring diagram for the pioneer breakdown. I'm no electrical expert but I can't make sense of the head light and some of the charging circuits. I haven't got as far as comparing it to what I actually took out of the vehicle, but any comment in the mean time would be appreciated. Richard
  10. On my way to work last Thursday (i think), parked in a layby on the B3165 between Crewkerne and the A303 in somerset was a low loader with what i think was a BMP1. Im no expert on russian vehicles, but was wondering if anyone here can shed some light on the vehicles destination and wether we will be seeing it at local shows. Richard
  11. Small bits of progress have been made. Over the winter i've mostly been taking bots home, blasting and painting them. Nearly completed trailer brake servo Couple photos of some of the other bits i've completed, including pedal arms, various brake, air system and chassis fittings. Hope to blast and paint the back axle soon, and then have the walking beams off because they seem a bit stiff and probably lift the diff too to check it over.
  12. Just checked what my paints are, and as follows: Tetrosyl Auto-prime etch primer GEP005 and its activated thinner GET005, for brush priming I use Bailey Paints Air Drying Zinc Phosphate Primer 5900, I then apply a couple coats of Cromadex 222BL2640 gloss deep bronze green because I believe gloss paints are much less porous than matt ones so its a good barrier coat, and finally I had Bailey paints mix up my own dark green matt colour in HMG 1K Fleet Polyurethane Enamel, which is commercial vehicle paint and seems to be quite tough. Hope this helps, Richard
  13. I use Tetrosyl etch primer. It comes as a paint and activated thinner which you mix 50:50 for spraying. Unfortunatly it can't be hand painted, as I discovered through bitter experience. Where I have to do hand painted bits I use a primer from Bailey paints in Gloucestershire who are very helpful, I can't remember what it is, i'll look tonite and post it later. Richard
  14. Good stuff there 6x6. I was at the new years day road run with father and the Jeep, I didn't realise it was you, we did watch you move off though, and you're right it is a lovely exhaust note. Bloody cold day. Richard
  15. I found one of the Foden EKAs on the direct sales part of Withams website, don't know if it was the one that someone said was missing crane lift rams, but it was advertised at £35k!!!!! Wishful dreaming eh? Richard
  16. Yes abn deuce i suppose we are quite a close family unit. Mother has a slightly different view of the vehicle collection than us lads. I think its safe to say that our workshop is very well equipped, I haven't yet come across anything that i've had to ask some one else to do for me yet.
  17. Hello to all, This is a bit late since i've been a member on this site for some time, but never bothered introducing myself. My name is Richard, I live in south somerset, and my brother, father and I have a small but growing collection of vehicles including a Willys MB, a Scammell SV/2S and an AEC Matador. The Jeep is fully restored and we took it to France in 2004, the Scammell is the current project, and you can see a blog of its restoration under the thread "Scammell Pioneer Restoration" in the Blogs of MV Restorations section, and the Matador is the next project waiting patently for its turn. You will also find my brother on this website under the name SV2S. We like to do total rebuild restorations, simply because I don't like to leave a single stone un-turned, and because I think you end up with a better finish at the end of the day. All the best to everyone, Richard
  18. See below new front hub cork seal in its housing
  19. I mentioned a couple of posts ago, that I was machining some new bits for the Scammell. See below one of the fruits of my labour, its a new fitting for the air system that the trailer taps screw on to, the old one was bent and the thread was stripped. I've also recently ordered new cork seals for the front hubs which are being specially made to order, new thrust bearings for the front king pins and some new wheel bearings, all of which should allow us to start re-assembling the front axle. Keep on truckin, Rich
  20. JimH, Its been a while coming but here are omse closeups of the gauges on my two instrument panels. They're not brilliant photos unfortunatly because they are too close I think. Original gearbox oil pressure gauge Original engine oil pressure Original ammeter Original air pressure NOS Speedo NOS Engine oil pressure NOS Ammeter I was also able to collect the following information from the gauges: Original engine oil pressure: Make: Smiths 0-60 lbs/square inch Original ammeter: Make: CAV 0-40 amps Original air pressure: Make: Smiths 0-160 lbs/square inch NOS Speedo: Make: Smiths 5-60 mph Also the panel itself is made by CAV and has the Type No. 82-168 Hope some of this helps, Richard
  21. The Matador was a breakdown truck for a local haulage firm, before being laid up in a field behind the owners house for some ten years, then I bought it about 6 years ago. I shall do a similar job on it as the Scammell, strip it down and go through everything. I will have 2 Pioneer manifolds when the third engine arrives, the third is different since the engine came out of a Foden, and i'd like to keep the spare Pioneer one and hopefully rebuild a spare engine and run it on a trailer behind the Scammell eventually, since i'm a bit of a Gardner buff aswell - sorry. Sorry I don't have a picture of the Mack at the Marshall Museum, i've got plenty other photos if you'd like me to start a new thread and put them up.
  22. Pics of our dash boards below, firstly the one that came out of the vehicle And a NOS one we sourced some ten years ago!! Front And back IF you can't see the detail one the gauges and want more info let me know and i'll write it all out. Richard
  23. I've got at least two panels, i'll take some photos later and post. Richard
  24. Hi Madrat, I think you are referring to the oil filler, you're right yours should be mounted down on the front of the timing case, which is where it is on the engine that came out of my pioneer. But this engine came out of a Foden and they were speced differently for different vehicles. This is one of the things i'm going to change during the rebuild. If you look on http://www.gardner-enthusiast.co.uk you'll find parts list and diagrams for the 6LW, its not only very useful when it comes to identifying parts and their numbers, but also shows the number of different configurations there were for various engine components. Richard
