I know what he means, I was at the museum a while back, and in the main building one of the galleries was roped off and it looked like it was virtually empty. The one where Richtofens flying helmet is in a glass case. There were also a few more empty spaces than I remember in other areas. It would be a shame if Hendon goes the way of other museums in london like the science museum, loads of exhibits gone, and just open spaces full of flashy lights.

The steam fair was a bit of a headache for them Lee. 16 ton steam engines, narrow solid tyres, and wet grassland.... Well that seems like its worth doing then :-D Don't know when yet, but definitely before Feb, as we want to go before the vegetation starts growing back. Sorry Lee, no vehicles, just feet! Although we might use the Fox to check the tank course before the show in June :whistle: I'll mention this to the site and get the all clear from them before we decide on a date, but it will be a sat or sun, that way you get to see the railway stuff too. Prob meet up in Mc Donalds car park opposite the mills, and then follow the Rapier to the rear mills entrance where we leave the cars. Usual safety rules apply, stay together as a group, no wandering off on your own, as I'm not pulling you out of any deep holes. Although this is meant as a nice day out, its also an incentive to get you to bring a vehicle or 5 along to the show on 23/24th june, see, i haven't forgotten.....

This is just to gauge interest, but seeing as how Sir Paul and Tunnel Rat are taking us down the tunnels, and showing us some interesting sights, would people be interested in doing visits to other places? At this time of year the vegetation and nettles have died down, and its perfect for having a walk around the gunpowder mills and checking out some of the historical buildings that you only see for a few seconds whilst on the land train. If people are interested I'd put together a little walking tour that would take in such places as the nitro glycerine hill, cordite press house, explosive test bunker, water mill and a few other more unusual places. No tunnels, but as its a "wet" site even the air raid shelters are above ground. What do you think, any interest?

Are the places we are going to in the middle of nowhere, or will the nice lady in the petrol station be coming with us to give us warnings over the tannoy?

Hi Colin I'd be interested in coming along, in fact i helped Anji organise something similar before she left to have her baby. Lets hope they have enough staff on the weekend so they don't have to close galleries like they did last time I was there. Let me know more details as and when. Cheers Rob

Jack, from what you have written it looks to me like you have already made up your mind, your just trying to find excuses not to do it. Yes it will cost a lot of money, and time, and work, and you will need to involve a few mates in the project, but even if you own your tank for a couple of years, just imagine the memories you will have, along with the photo albums of shots of the time when the gearbox locked up on the one way system, or when you ran out of fuel on the dual carriage way, or even the pics of a proud owner going round the arena at beltring! You only have one crack at life, go for it! Don't leave all the money to the kids, they will only waste it on sensible things :-D

The undercarriage will be suitably protected for this trip, although richard certainly has a delicate touch :-D Looking forward to another great day out, I'd better not pig out at Xmas or I won't get down some of those holes!

Reminds me of my time at catterick, the PTI thought we could do with a run down the stream to cool us off. It was february and the lucky ones in front got to break the ice! :-D His sense of humour wasn't fun either :police:

Depends really what you want to do with it. Going to shows? Get something big enough to carry your tent and gear. Driving a fair distance? Get something that cruises at over 50mph Can't go wrong with a 110, plenty around, and easy to fix, plus you can change your theatre of operations with a paint can and roller! Desert or nato, you choose! :-D Plus of course you won't have to dress up like a yank (and you will have lots of change from your 10K)

Hi Jack The best thing is change your oil often, as the sheering effect of the gears on the oil molecules tends to reduce its effectiveness over time. There is a guy on e-bay selling molyslip for engines and other stuff for transmissions. I haven't tried the transmission stuff but the engine molyslip is fantastic! and its only about a tenner a go. If your transmission is noisy then that might be a symptom of wear in bearings, selectors or gears. Best trade in the old motor and go for something modern and post war :-D

Or if you didn't fancy something big like a farm jack, go for a 2 ton bottle jack with a piece of scaffolding board to stop it sinking in the mud or soft tarmac. You can pick them up in halfords for peanuts. I wouldn't bother with the original land rover jack, they can be a pain to use if you don't have the correct handle.

As a show organiser and promotor (at the gunpowder mills if you need reminding) I'm happy for ANY vehicle to turn up. There is absolutely NO bias between ww2 and postwar! One group of re-enactors for example was ww2, and another group was portraying Croation forces from 1991, so no bias there! I must admit, at other events there is a definite "If its not WW2, your not welcome" attitude, but thats just down to the organisers, as far as the public go, if its big and green they love it! They don't care about the age, OR its history...... 23/24th June at Waltham Abbey, Essex. Just off junc 26 of the M-25 No Bias, No prejudice, No hassle! come along and have a lovely time :-D
