The MkIV, so far as I know could be driven tomorrow but it is so difficult to drive (hand cranked start, 4 well trained crew to drive etc) that it just isn't driven. The Whippet is not too far away from being runnable but the others: no realistic chance really.
Are Bovington that short of volunteers to man these vehicles then?????
If they are then I am much suprised - if not actually shocked!!

Up on the MilWeb Vehicle Park page today:
Military Vehicle Breakdown SchemeRoadsure launches 24 hour breakdown cover for military vehicles. Call to speak to one of our military vehicle specialists to arrange your cover today.
0845 408 0016
URL takes you to http://www.bluepoppy.co.uk/demos/roadsure/military_banner.html
which is just an advertising banner page as far as I can see.
Be interesting to find out what cover they are going to offer and how they propose recovering such things as the Alvis 6x6 family which should not be recovered on suspended tow!!!!!

Interesting topic this......
Having seen - and nearly caught by - people turning classic Saabs into things they never were I'm probably a bit biased but here goes - I agree with what others above have said - if some one wants a particular type of vehicle - say a "Pink Panther" from the Reg'ts days in Oman - and there are none available either because they've all been destroyed, are in museums or what have you then taking a similar spec vehicle and converting it is a reasonable thing to do as long as it is declared as such up front if being sold on or entered into a competion of some sort.
After all - this is only what the military did themselves. However - if the vehicles do exist - as Panthers do - then converting a LWB into a replica should not be countenanced. Period. For those events which involve judging standards of vehicles I believe that replica's should start with a certain number of points deducted for the simple reason they ARE replica's - it's a hell of a lot harder to get a vehicle thats seen active service into show condition than it is to take a vehicle thats spent most of it's life either in storage or in barracks.
As regards Cara and Micks Clubmobile conversion - I personally reckon this is a good thing they are doing as none exist now, apart from theirs, and to have one to show future generations what their grandparents went through is a big plus in my books - too many people are trying to "rewrite" history these days so physical evidence of the equipment and conditions in use can only ever be a good thing.
Well - thats my tuppence worth - hope it hasn't upset too many people!!!
-
cheers guys,
at least the Jimmy looks better than my hands & nails do at the moment
berni
yeah, know what you mean there berni
Not too sure I even want to think about the image that conjures up!!!!!
-
Looks great!!! Yet another one on the "I want to see" list
-
Wonder if you could get the Tiger 2 running again????
-
You'd have to censor the part about uniform to get my wife interested
-
Spent the weekend unwinding in West Wales - this seemed to have involved half the contents of a bottle of brandy but I can't recall exactly what/why/when or how for some inexplicable reason........
When still compos-mentis - spent the weekend trying to juggle the bank figures such that all things are Go for the 1st week in May - fingers (and everything else) are still crossed!!!!
-
Well at least we know who can carry on the hobby when we are all too old then! mc spool, i agree with you! The wife stays well out of it, and when I suggested getting a landy to go with the ferret to shows i said she could drive it, what was the answer? NOOOOO!! oh ok then. She doesn't know what she's missing out on!
Mick.
p.s thanks for all the replies!
Fear not - I get the same reply from mine!!!! Even made the same sort of offer but......
Although this might be due to the fact it can take a CONSIDERABLE amount of time for her to climb into a Stalwart!!!
-
Thus far the daughter has expressed interest in working on the Stalwart when we get her - together with the Oik (aka boyfriend) and some of her friends. Apparently it's so ugly it's actually "cool" whatever that means????
-
I have to say Jack, it looks fantastic, are you going to get another GMC? :?:
Mick.
Gets a vote from me too!!
Yet another one on the "I want to see in real life" list!!!!
-
Looks nice - maybe one day I'll get to see Eric
I can recall spraying 4-tonners with an airgun run from the vehicles compressor - so it was done out in the MT yard with the engine running!!!
On that basis - I wouldn't worry too much about the spray gun you've used!!
-
Hope the weather holds for the weekend and all goes well - esp. with the Ferret!
Spare a thought for us as we'll be in the quagmire more commonly known as Wales
-
Looks even better when you see the real thing up close!!
Almost tempted me back towards a Saracen!!
-
OOPS!!!!
That looks expensive................
Reminder to self - put copy of MoD service instructions in cab of whatever vehicle comes my way and follow religously!!!
-
I can feel an order coming in the not-too-distant future!!
Algae on Stalwarts seems endemic plus the roof of my car also has it's fair share (previous owner put it away for the winter with a wet hood stowed in the down position!! :? )

I always use this for cleaning, it works quite well:

Chris
Sounds like the answer to a lot of MV owners prayers if the data sheet info on this is to be believed:
MARINE-CLEAN removes grease, oil, mildew, algae, musty odors, soap films, wax. Use it to clean canvas, vinyl, nylon, holding tanks, grease traps, auto parts and more. -
Neil you are smaller than me and I manage it  just
Have to see if you fit in mine next time its out
If I am - then at 6' tall and 22 stone in weight it'll be the first time since the eighties that I've been smaller than someone
Going to be an interesting experiment trying your's for size though!!!!
-
Been doing a bit of digging -well , OK, googling - on this 'cos it intrigued me and turned up this:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_rdsafety/documents/page/dft_rdsafety_611257.hcsp
This is the official Department for Transport site and has all the info on the new regs that come into effect from Sept. this year.
Hope it helps answer the questions!!
-
Must admit to being partial to the Saladin as #2 to the Stalwart - but given my build I doubt I'd fit in one
-
Thanks Chris - will let you know when/if I get her.
Know it's a case of "wishing the life away" - but I do wish it was the end of April so's the budget figures were in and I had the thumbs up from SWMBO to go borrow the £££'s..........
-
Thanks John - I suspect a return visit to the cab of a Stollie might be in the offing in the not-too-distant future
Not sure what the speedo is right now - or why it's not working even... There's a fair chance the head might be OK and it's the take off from one of the front bevel boxes thats up the creek!!! Hopefully in a month or so's time we'll be able to have a good look and find out
-
hi lee,
hopefully not hes got someone coming to look at it during the week
What happened to the poor old Ferret this time??? Same issue as the last Coalhouse weekend or something new???
Kevins not having much luck this year is he???
-
at least its warm in the winter john
So's the Mk 2 Stalwart - got a nice little heater unit in the cab - provided the last one in remembers to close the hatches!!
Mind you - leave the handbrake on and I believe even the Mk 1 can get a nice warm cab after a while
(ps - spot on about my vote Mick!!)
tiger tank

Cheers Richard - suppose I should have thought of that - early 20th century metallurgy did leave a bit to be desired
Shame though as they are a very important part of our history - perhaps even more so than the Tiger!!
