  1. okay I have stalwart number two, she looks too good to break up so i think she is going to become a bit of a project...got to find me another old tatty stolly to use as the off road toy, maybe a mark 1...will post picces tiomorrow so we have a before and after record...this is going to be fun..she is going to become a sand version first...maybe with a diesel engine for fun..maybe not... neil no brakes including handbrake. steering okay without power..engine hoepfully will be started in the next week or so...so loads of work to do...
  2. simple cog change in the trasfer box and you have 2500 rpm showing over 40 mph... but to be honest this is for off roading not for road use, so dont care about the floor or the sump. just want grunt at low engne revs and high angles of attack. ie in second...will never use any other gear I reckon and if its used just for off road i reckon the snap loads will be kept to a minimum... I really want a genuine 300 bhp at 2500 rpm,...anyone got a good idea of the right engine...
  3. not as good as they look in the pictures lots of things to be done, but it will be done. I just love these things..that is so sad...
  4. yes there is no way you could land on tracks...they wouldnt last long at all
  5. and the tracks would make it work much better on land...

its a real bummer for sure..but I am sad to say finding the bits will be tough and the crooks well it wont even register on the richter scale of the police things to do...
  7. looking good, where did you get the material from...need some of that myself...
  8. here are the piccies not great but its a start...
  9. yes it has worked before so will try again... could not get pictures up again..it does say the size they need to be but mine are much bigger, is it the size that causes the problem or will it resize them as you say to within the limits specified...
  10. thanks everyone i will be doing a few sample sheets for us all to have a look at will email them...got to do a trip to eastern europe again next week so it wont arrive for two weeks so be patient...hopefully we will be all set up for the summer show season...
  11. fitted a wrecker crane to the back of one of my zils, and used it today marvellous fun... the pictures are too big to fit on here anyone know how to resize them...
  12. okay this beggers a question, if i wanted to convert one of my stollys to a diesel, which engine do i want to use, I know some one hwo has fitted a differnt cog inside the transfer box and made it rev lower with the b81 engine, now with that conversion and a diesel engine that would run at say 2500 top whack i would still be able to maintain 45 mph, anyone got any ideas of a good engine in the 250bhp range that is a straight 6 or 8 that would drop in, preferrebly one that isnt too heavy and comes with its own compressor...24 volt is a given of course too a turbo phaser sounds a bit old hat these days but any other ideas..what about a bedford 500, they do about 300 bhp i think but have heard all sorts of horror stories about their reliability...
  13. Mod Edit.. Post moved to new thread http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?p=165591
  14. not today you wont, chieftain will be destroyed in seconds with modern ammunition...your best bet would have to be challenger 2..although I do think its a chieftain on steriods....still would not like to be in any tank under fire...
  15. THANKS JACK AM WITH YOU AND WILL INVESTIGATE ALL THE ISSUES AND COME BACK TO THIS. I DONT KNOW THE ANSWERS YET BUT WILL SEE WHAT I CAN FIND OUT...NOT INTO SPECULATION OR STUPID EXAMPLES, OF WHICH I CAN COME UP WITH PLENTY MYSELF, MORE INTERESTED IN FACTS AND FROM THOSE FACTS DETERMINING A WAY FORWARD. I WILL COLLECT SOME FACTS AND POST ONCE I HAVE THEM...AGREE ITS A MATE TO MATE SERVICE RIGHT NOW.. oops forgot the caps lock sorry...
  16. Here what your saying. Of course I too can come up with loads of scenarios where it would cause more trouble than its worth, for instance for vehicles under 3.5 tons there is the aa/rac...its stupid not to use them...but for bigger stuff you have to have real heavy RECOVERY stuff. this is not all about recovery, its about helping in times of trouble, as i say its someone who might know a local firm that can store the vehcile its about someone who can give you access to a phone book, or local knowledge and cups of tea... Life is all about what we can do. Those who keep following the 'what we cant do' trend have a justifiable reason but I dont think we should follow it...if we want to help each other lets try...if its just a cup of tea whilst some one comes with a low loader then so be it... dont focus on the tow side of it, its an option that may or may not be available...and I doubt that in the end helping a chum is actually as dangerous as not.... I will do a bit more investigation on the lega side of towing a mate, or low loading a mate, or recovering a mate and not charging him and what the insurance companies think...will come back with the answers. DONT MAKE THIS MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT NEEDS TO BE. AND LETS HAVE SOME HELPFUL STUFF RATHER THAN THE OBVIOUS NEGATIVE STUFF... iTS WHY THIS IS THE WRONG PLACE FOR IT, IT IS NOT ABOUT STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION...THATS A VERY LIMITED OPTION IN MOST CASES. BUT PLEASE DO NOT GET ME WRONG YOUR POINTS ARE VERY VERY IMPORTANT AS i KNOW A LOT OF YOU ON HERE HAVE KNOWLEDGE IN AREAS THAT I DONT AND THAT IS WHY THIS FORUM IS SO DAMN HELPFUL... SO KEEP THE COMMENTS COMING, BUT PLEASE DONT BE OFFENDED IF I DONT AGREE....
  17. Thanks lee this is useful information and I understand the mentality of insurance companies in using every trick in the book to get off with not paying out. its a bit like giving a tow to another broken down vehicle in your car, are you insured for it...I bet not... But understand how it needs to be a mate to mate service...thanks i think this clarifies things, it also clarifies the state of this couintry and its utter devotion to culpability and making those who try to help the offender and making them pay...country has gone mad... I will investigate it a bit more...and see how far we can take this...
  18. my tanks are Big Willie, nwith the big wheels on the back, so world war 1, the Panther (closely follwoed by tiger 11)these are so world war 2, cold war, Centurion and cheiftain, then modern tanks T72/80 with reactive armour and challenger 11 (closely followed by Abrahams) although I will own a chieftain one day as they are so my era...
  19. Currently yes that is how its being set up...primarily to ensure confidentiality for some and really to see how many people would want to sign up... I was hoping that the HMVF would take a bigger interest and move it on to the next stage where it is a much more supported format and then be available to everyone and a feather in the cap of the HMVF for doing it...but that isnt the case so far... I suggested it but did not want to run it as i am a very busy chappy as it is but for now I am moving it along. Although I am still not convinced its in the right place...storage and transportation? But hey ho, happy to live within the rules designated by the team... However if the numbers get big enough then it will be self fulfilling and hopefully be available to everyone to make use of...most people who own these big vehicles love to help where they can and its great fun bringing your toy out in an emergency to help someone in need...
  20. because its not about transportation or storage, its about offering a helping hand when you are broken down, its about offering access to yellow pages to tea to physical help, recoveruy may or may not be part of that help but it is not the essential element. Its the help that is wanted. Its more of a general MV issue than a transportation or storage issue...thats why I think its bizzarre for it to reside here...
  21. never thougt of it like that, better to have one for each week of the year...that gives me scope to buy a few more... just got to get going and make a bit more money so I can buy a few more... Want to start a museum but not sure if it is worth the effort...
  22. I am coming, ...will bring either my landrover, stationwagon...or the gaz or something small, everything else is too big...
  23. okay couldnt resist this one, going to turn it into a complete toy for offroading, so losing as much weight as possible, everything that isnt essential is going, and some things will get changed for lighter or simpler...like grease in the wheel hubs rather than oil, like a small radiator, and electric fans, an oil cooler for the engine and the gearbox and the transfer box...although not sure how i will do the tansfer box as it doesnt have an oil pump...just a splash system.. going to be fun and in time will fit a diesel engine and keep the b81 for a spare...will get a thris stolly to adapt for road going and hauling...maybe..
  24. engine purchased from Stolly owner, not the same spec but hopefully the block is good, if anyone has a proper stalwart engine going spare that would still be good. i want to have at least one good engine spare for each of my toys...
