  1. Make sure you do come down to Tassie mate, stay a couple days at my place! Just PM me when you are ready!

you are for sure on that and can take it we will be there...will let you know but it will likely be early next year...any best dates for you...PM me..let me know if you need any small parts that I can bring...had no luck looking through the manuals on the MTLB, will get my Russian man to have a look...

  2. beautiful engine Skot, you certainly have had no luck with this lot at all...I suspect the skot is underpowered for the weight it has to carry all the time....the engine must have to be working very hard all the time so putting it under a lot of stress...and they were never popular as a military vehicle not just becuase of the driving position but due to the high maintenance..

you are certainly not having much luck though...fantastic job your doing there...

cant wait to visit in the next 12 months...

    Paul

  3. so easy to laugh now and so easy to forget, but arent these trucks auto, shouldnt it have stayed put without the handbrake on...wonder why it did actually move...can only think it must have been left in neutral and without the handbrake on, or the handbrake was not working, could also have come off the hitch, we dont see that bit, perhpas it was not properly attached to the truck...shame we dont get more,...

  4. took my 432 for a 40 mile drive once, doesnt sound a lot, mostly on good dual carriage way roads and with an escort vehicle and reversing camera used as a rear view camera as the cars get so close you cant tell anyone is behind you...it was an exhuasting journey, they are easy to drive but the noise and the wind in your face and the sensory overload certainl made for an exhaustive journey, i eventually kept the girl to about 23-5 mph as anything more just became too noisy...was a fun trip all the same...although not my idea of regular fun...

  5. yes it sort of answers my question really, the diesels are less strained, likely more reliable, easier maintained and on diesel not petrol....easier for logistics....I still think I am right in saying that in reality there isnt much performance change...what I am saying is that they got the CVRT mostly right all those years ago...

The cummins engine is a good engine of that there is no doubt...anyone know what power output it is...

Modern CVRT's must be a dream to own...and 20k doesn't sound at all bad,...

  6. Chris,

    Sounds like interesting news there.

I guess we are fortunate having a Stormer and a number of the petrol engine CVR(T)s in the collection. The difference between diesel power and petrol is huge, it is what they really need.

    Good luck with your project

    R

hi Robin, hear what your saying ...what is huge, I have never really found the petrol engine wanting. I can imagine that the hills mean fewer gear changes but with the better rev range the petrol engine more than likely needs fewer changes over rough terrain, a bit of swings and roundabouts really...just wondering if it really is that much different or is it more a case that everything is deisel in the army these days and therefore logisitcs easier...rather than performance or driveability...

was the reason to change mostly to do with logisitics, easier to fix engine more reliable and std fuel...sounds more likely to me, than it drives better up hills with less gearchanges....

  7. hey Neil, no need to explain to me, each to their own and whilst i would find it a pain to drive them on the road I AM SURE OTHERS WOULD NOT.. I think what your experience shows is that the DVLA and VOSA are a force unto their own, have no sense of sensibility and operate their business purely to maintain their own jobs....the rules they apply are sometimes draconian and in many cases pointless.

I personally think it is ludicrous that we are forever finding new rules to reduce our ability to enjoy the UK roads.

And dont start me on the hogging of the second lane rule crap that is now in force...if ever there was a more stupid law I have not heard of it recently...madness personified...who ever thought that rule up is a complete nutter...

you can hog the outside lane but you cannot hog the middle lane, you can travel at 70 mph in the middle lane and get a fine for holding the traffic up...i.e. those who want to travel at 80 mph...isnt that illegal..its pure madness and makes no sense whatsoever...What causes a very high proportion of accidents on the motorways ? . lane changing...so now we want them to change lanes even more often...just plain madness...did anyone see that re[port of that idiot idiot woman from the transport ministry on the tv going on about holding up speeding motorists...idiotic...sorry I said dont mention it...

  8. my mtlb is not road registered, afraid i dont really need to drive this sort of vehicle on uk roads, just silly to even try in my humble opinion. 432 is bad enough and I would not spend much time running it on the road except to keep my driving skills up...

for my drops we modified a 15 ton bed with wider plates and strengthened it a bit, but it is still bowing in the middle, will add a bit more metal this year...

it loads really well and the bed having been adapted for the mtlb fits really well...#

DROPS drives with it and a stalwart on a trailer at the back to be a full 38 tons easily...she is a lovely truck...could do with another one soon

  9. My post was in jest..........

There was NO offence meant, just some light hearted humour. Hence the smillies.

  11. yes that was the purpose of the green goddess to pump water to other fire engines. I understand. the pipe on mine is well goosed, it looks like it has frozen and split in winter...two very short splits in the copper...we are going to fit an oil cooler and see how that works first, cant be as good as the cold water feed but dont like the idea of the water tank flooding into the engine again, although there is a tap to stop it doing this...but it will be forgotten I am sure so no more water cooling in the engine oil...just need to get me some new sump, rocker cover gaskets...and a new oil filter, anyone know where I can get these...oh and a new headlight lense, broken by son with wayward hammer...

  12. I dont think that its in the interests of the hobby to suggest that there is an epidemic of poor maintenance amongst its many members. The very nature of anything mechanical means that it will require repairs from time to time, in many cases if someone should be selling a vehicle in order perhaps to finance another project, there will be a lack of desire to spend monies on a departing vehicle when that money could well be spent on the new project. Its the responsibility of the new owner to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy before going onto a public road. We have two safety officers in our area (I happen to be one) who monitor the general condition of the vehicles in our area, we are very mindful of that responsibility, so much so that we are starting maintenance classes at our monthly meetings.

great point Ray, but actually its the drivers responsibility not the owner, if you drive a vehicle owned by someone else and it is involved in an accident it is you the driver who is responsible not the owner, I know a bit pedantic but if your going to be pedantic about maintenance you have to understand the truth of the situation. If you drive someone elses vehicle it is no excuse to say I did not know it was broken or unsafe, although I am sure in a court it would be taken into consideration if you had every reason to believe it was good to go...I am not a lawyer, but the law is very clear you the driver are responsible for the maintenance and safety of the car/vehicle you are driving...

Truck drivers know this, we have to do our daily checks, we have to tick our boxes and we cannot drive out if we have a light out or a nut loose, well at least the major items like wheels, etc. We have to show we have done these checks. too easy in smaller vehicles not to bother...

but following the thread I forgot to check my oil in my stolly once after a lot of playing. I was fairly new to the old girl and did not know she used oil, when I checked she was virtually out. I am sure it was this that eventually led to the rods going through the block some 5 years later...

  13. yep thats what it was, pipes in sump split, filled my engine with water...unbelievable...so if I bypass this, and the engine is planned to run for a long time I need to fit an electric fan to the radiator?

I am going to fit an alternator to it to as having continuous charging issues...
