  1. Interesting to see that the tin work at the rear left corner upper has the M3 logo stamped into it as per the newer Clayton Engineering machines. Robin
  2. Again, another very soft spot for me the old Eager Beaver. I think it is the classic function over form design with no added fluff fluff that has always attracted me to working and military vehicles and Land Rovers. From one of the last times I was back in the UK I did find an Eager Beaver between Somerford Keynes and Oaksey in Gloucstershire. If anyone wants info on it I can sort something. I woul say that the pretty unit featured has a very Hangar Queen presentation about it with red bits galore, very Artillery like. Regarding the spot light while im sure there was a specific one from the factory it they got whacked in service like any good workshop they would make the kit useable by plonking on something that would work and probably order the correct one and if it came in fit it when time allowed.   4. Just some random thoughts on this piece of artillery. It was also known as the pack howitzer as the whole gun could be broken down into small sections capable of being carried by a mule pack train in the mountains. Some people called it the spaghetti gun as its parts flopped all over the place, kind of rattling piss fit idea. There were two Britains die cast toys of this. One has trails that are not flexible at all joints the other one has all joints flexible. The Canadian Forces used them but were withdrawn a few years ago, a few are monuments in front of Legion branches. None in civvy hands in Canada that I know of, they were towed by the Chev 5/4 ton trucks. Seemed to have dissapeared around the time of the bisbandment of the Airborne after Somalia. Robin
  5. Allegedly there was a modification done by ABRO for its use as a range safety vehicle at BATUS. As yet I have found no documentary or photgraphic evidence to support this. Robin

  8. Sirhc you are spot on. Yes there is a layer of applique something on the roof covering the whole area. If I tell you that the colour was yellow does that give anyone a clue as to why? Robin

Okay, so many governements and museums move ex military vehciles many miles away from their original theatres of usage, so they are discounted from this quiz. Last night I visited a Lightweight Land Rover that was made in the UK at Lode Lane and in service with the Saudi National Guard, it now resides in Canada. Lets hear other far from home examples Robin
  17. Frankly in my humble opinion the Fox is a race horse designed by a committee that ended up as a Camel in comparison to the Ferret. Any Fox owners / user have issues with the fan bevel box leaking oil when hot? We have had this issue. My planned mod is as follows, we will modify a fill plug and a drain plug with internal threads and drill the centre out. Then fit a series of hard / soft lines to a remote mounted in line gas / petrol filter and use that as a vent to allow over pressure to escape but trap oil. Mounted in parralel will be a tube with a cap and a dip stick to easily check the level. No new holes will be drilled and nothing will be welded on and all of this will be reversible in required. Can anyone see any flaws in my plan? Robin
  18. Bob Morrison did a few lines and some pictures on the Red Arrows Lightweight in the old Land Rover Owner magazine. It was as a result of a query from a reader. The lightweight went on tour with them and was stowed in the C130 Hercules that carried all their support kit. When the team came through Ottawa, Canada a bunch of years ago I went onto the ramp to take ome slides of it but it was never unloaded. All I got was partial shot inside the aircraft. Robin

Thats easy, its the early breached hull improvised repair plug Mk1 A It was designed to be driven into breaches in armoured vehicle hulls by sledge hammer and was manufactured with a tapered end to fit typical shell hole sizes of known enemy rounds at the time. It was available for various theatres in various sizes ranging from heavy machine gun round sizes up to main armament and was proposed to be issued in variety packs. It was barbed (possibly not shown on drawings) so that it was a one time use item. The practicality was never realised and taken by the troops as a joke as the issue date was 01 April on the packaging. Robin

  23. Were many of the MK1s with this type of turret released into civvy hands or were most removed and stored for potential later use. I know of 3 so far in North America, many in UK? Robin
  24. Can anyone help me with idiot based simple instructions on how to remove the turret on a Fox please. I need a step by step as I would like to take it off to do some deeper maintenance and cant get the room to do so. We have a Bedford MJ with crane and have pulled Ferret power pack no problems with it. Failing that I will make an A frame gantry and yank it with a chain fall. Anyone know the weight of the turret so I can have an idea of SWL of kit required for the job. Please feel free to email me or send pics to assist. I will worship the ground you walk on if I can get this job done Thanks Robin
