  1. I suppose its a bit like an airborne jeep !!
  2. I'm still curious to know what happened to the Dennis Tipper. I would be delighted to hear that it was restored and repeat that I wouldn't dream of pursuing any claim to it. David.
  3. Richard - Dinger reckons "Railway Operating Department". The Royal Engineer unit who operated the rail services in France during WW1
  4. In the early 1960's students from Oxford University travelled from Oxford to Morocco in a 1944 Austin K2 Ambulance. The trip was reported in "Payload" the Austin commercial vehicle magazine in a two page article in the May/June 1963 issue a copy of which was sold recently on Ebay. I bid unsuccessfully, thinking it would not sell for very much and have now come to regret my low £5 bid as I would dearly like to read this article. Oxford is my home town,I have a K2 and I have spent a little time in Morocco - I'm not proposing to repeat the trip but I would like to read the article. Can anyone help with a photocopy or scan of this magazine article - perhaps even the purchaser ? All reasonable expences would be covered if anyone can help with a copy. Any help in locating the magazine article or any other accounts of the trip would also be greatly appreciated. David Belcher
  5. Is it as obvious as being intended for Royal Marine use ?
  6. It won't strip water based paint either.
  7. Richard, I just picked up on the LTF France organising body and copyright mentions. Certainly the text is written by a native English speaker. I just had a vision of the early morning briefings - "Leesten verry carefully,I shall say thees unnly once" David.
  8. Thanks Dan - I used Hammerite in the end with good results. I was put off initially by previous experience with other Hammerite paints but this seems fine. The spray cans are also good in smooth silver and cover well. Thanks also to all the other contributors. David.
  9. [quote=Pete Ashby;345180 I'm good thank you David................. regards Pete Tut tut Pete - there must be too many Starbucks and Macdonalds in your part of the world ! I'm always pedantically telling off my small Grand- daughter for saying that. I'm pleased you are well though. I've got the barn now and still have the vehicles but no spare time. Hope to see you on one of your visits, All the best, David.
  10. Thanks but they are not the same instrument. The Control Board is the square box as Richard described containing the voltage control stuff. Quite possibly all CAV metal parts were finished in the same paint though - the original "Black Box" ?
  11. Thanks Pete - I've found out that CAV made different types. The Dingo unit is as Richard describes. Hope all is well with you - haven't seen you for a few years !! Regards, David.
  12. Thanks Richard that confirms my thoughts. What sort of level of gloss ?
  13. Can anyone please tell me the original factory colour of the casing for the WW2 CAV voltage control box (or Control Board as its described in parts books). In this case the CAV 141-1 as fitted to a Dingo. I'm presuming black but I've seen some painted silver as the rest of the engine bay and green as the rest of the vehicle. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of an unused, straight from the stores example ? Thanks. David.
  14. Could always count on a good, cheery conversation with George. One of the early MVCG members who will be sadly missed. Another relatively recent loss was Ivor Houlahan who's memorial service I attended back in the early part of the summer. David Belcher.
  15. are the ones you have a brown colour ? were they all made by Humber ? and did Humber make the main Hoods as well ? Jules Yes - in brown. I've only ever seen the doors and screens. I would have imagined that a British maker would have eventually made hoods though,if only after the war when US supplies dried up.
  16. Julian - I'm with Pete on this. I've got a set in the barn. I have a rooted objection to being so enclosed. On the other hand if I were going to drive to the Ardennes in winter again..... David.
  17. Well spotted -thanks. Richard - how did this brush on ?
  18. Thanks for the info. I've had a look for "Coo-Vav" - can't see it. Any further leads please.
  19. I'm still hoping to get some practical feedback and recommendations from someone who has recently used a silver paint for engine bay or interior. Frank Burbery is apparently running the paints supply down and can only furnish the silver in 5 litres and so I have tried an aluminium based silver from an outfit in Hull who advertise on ebay. Their paint spec. looks ideal ,brush or spray, heat resistant etc but the tin I bought is far too thin to brush and still leaves brush marks even with a second coat. I have also tried an aerosol Hammerite (smooth) which gives a reasonable and heat resistant finish but I've been warned about the difficulties of their brushing paint. I need about 1 litre of synthetic based paint which can be brushed satisfactorily,I don't suppose the heat resistance is that critical and i would like it to have a good resistance to oil and petrol but not be too high a gloss finish. Can anyone help with the name of a supplier please. Without opening another line of discussion - can anyone make a suggestion for the engine paint in eau de nil (not blue) Thanks, David.
  20. Ian - yes I did find the plugs as Simon suggests. Simon - Thanks for the plug source. I've only ever found NOS sockets complete for the other end of the cable, never any bits for them. Send me a pm if you like for trailer bits,we will have some stuff left over at the end. David.
  21. Thanks for the ideas chaps - nice picture Richard. I will probably go with a brush finish - anyone else any ideas ?
  22. Coming back to the original question. Has anyone any practical experience or recomendations please for a good silver (brushing) paint for an engine bay ?
  23. i wonder whether this criterion applied back in the forties and fifties ? A decent silver paint with a bit of heat resistance would do me for the engine bay.
