  1. Avast knocks spots off the rest

    Diana

I'm back to using Avast free version now after a brief sortie into free MS security essentials last year, which let a virus and some other stuff in, resulting in me having to reinstall windows then reinstall all my usual programs...:computerrage: I did have a complete backup of everything else

I'd never had any problems at all using Avast free for many years before that so I'm sticking with it now..

  2. Clansman Harness info and description of Clansman R/T equipment. There should be no further confusion over what does what :-)

The following link has information relating to not just the PRC 320 but a lot of other Clansman equipment:

  3. Don''t know where you'd get the ferrules, but I'd suggest brass flexible conduit, especially if used outside the vehicle. Salt and water will soon destroy steel, galvanised or not.

Does anyone have a UK source for the ferrules that fit onto the end of flexible steel conduit, as used on the electrical systems on a lot of WW2 vehicles? It's fairly easy to get the steel conduit, but plain ferrules that fit on the end seem to be very elusive, unless you want to buy them in bulk from China! There are lots of other complex ones that can be obtained, which screw into panels, etc, but nobody seems to do the plain ends.

This is the sort of thing I'm after, in various sizes, between 10mm to 30mm:

    Thanks for any help.

  4. Recently on eBay a number of CAV horn contact sets with the rubber waterproof cover seal were on sale. There is a potential problem with the contact set earthing because of a lug on the underside of the contact set. Which can contact the horn body when the contact set is screwed into place.

The fix is easy, just snip off the lug. This may only become apparent when the horn is pressed or power is switched on and should - but may not (if it doesn't work) cause the over-current relay to trip.

  5. Do you think it would be easier if I used my plasma cutter to cut a whopping big hole in the side of the ferret? then I could use an engine crane?

It would save a lot of work!!

agreed taking whole unit out the back then splitting is best option then u can replace those impossible to reach brake lines and paint and clean engine bay:D
  6. Really good tips from both You and Richard which help in resolving a problem.

The next difficult bit is the weather, since its to be done outdoors - and there's no tip available for British Weather!!

As Richard says its easier on a flat surface. I have removed an engine on my todd and pulled the Ferret forward on my todd as well as I didn't want to move the engine on the lifter as it was up to high and on a rough surface. A van should be able to move a Ferret from underneath the gantry. Or the other way is to grip a tyre low down and move the tyre in the direction you want to go.
  7. Richard has made an important point about swiveling the gearbox, therefore a swivel has to be factored into the lifting arrangement.

I had already though to raise the gantry off the ground further using concrete blocks. Using a wheeled gantry then the only way to shift the gearbox is to move the gantry out of the way on its wheels, which is not the correct thing to do but the only way to get the box away from the vehicle body?

I belive moving a ferret is a difficult proposition without its engine?

    Diana

Then you would have to push the Ferret clear to lower the turret or gearbox
  8. A Question to those who have removed the gearbox on a Ferret Mk 2/3 (i.e. the turreted version).

Have you managed to do it with an 8ft demountable gantry? I need to remove the gearbox on a Ferret and there's only 2ft clearance between the top if the turret and the bottom of an 8ft gantry, my guess with everything as short as it can be (short slings etc) it can be done, but can the gearbox be lifted out then with the same 8ft Gantry and clearing the top of the vehicle, which will of course have its turret removed by now?

  9. One cannot use any form of jointing compound as the bevel box outer slides in and out of its housing ever such a small amount. Jointing compound will stop that happening.

3mm O ring cord cut to length and joined using superglue to make an oo ring works a treat, use two side by side. Plenty of lubricant when the outer is slid into the inner will help stop damage to the o rings.

I better clarify as the cork gaskets I used to work on years ago we used the Permatex..It comes in different grades now like for a water pump...I remember the big secret of success in using it was to put it on the cork gasket and let it cure a minimum of 45 minutes before clamping together.....Diana & Jacki are great mechanics IMO and I have never worked on the bevel boxes....I am only going off information that worked for me on other projects....Permatex has been out for about 40 years now....Cork gaskets are old school and maybe Diana & Jackie can add some information as they experiment with better modern age O-rings and such....I certainly highly value their posts and opinions....Hope this helps some one....
  10. Since no-one has replied then maybe someone should.

Do you realise the weight of a wheel station? shipping and handling will be phenomenal, that is if you can locate one. Tim Vibert in Aus may have one or two. But why not try replacing the damaged parts, which will be a lot easier and less costly.

I'm sure that advice will be a lot more forthcoming about repairs than trying to locate two complete wheel stations.

    Diana

Hello all..! I`m looking for two wheel station or outer hub assemblies for 2 Ferret`s mk2/3. Have 2 friends that have broke there`s and we are trying to find some. Have been contacting all the normal places in the UK, just seeing if anyone here has any. I`m in the US Texas and partly own a Saladin #04CC45 "we think that`s right number" and just trying to help out some folks. Thanks for any info.
  11. I am not a Gent!

..... but perhaps the intelligent ones that pop up in Aldi's or Lidl's are a good option.

    Diana

    Thanks Gents,

I have just borrowed a trickle charger to get me going as I do not think the battery is totally had it. I will invest in an intelligent charger. Optimate/Accumate/Ctek/Tecmate just to name a few. I have a confession to make and I am sure I would not be the only one that has initially relied on the Jeep fuel gauge. I think you can guess what I am about to say. I was low on fuel and nearly flatened the battery trying to start my baby, I dont need to go on do I you get the drift though.:nut:

Thanks again I have learnt my lesson.

  12. Slide the rubber boot over the wire, solder the connector, apply servisol silicon grease (maplin) to the rubber boot and the wire connector and slide on the rubber boot.

If the rubber boot is old it may well have gone hard, which may make it difficult. New Connectors generally fit together easily.

Also useful to pack silicon grease into the female connector, this will inhibit corrosion. Do not use petroleum jelly as its "petroleum" based and will damage the rubber

    Diana

Anybody got any idea how you re-wire the original push fit electrical connectors. I have acquired a few tinned copper connectors & the bulbous rubber bit that pushes over the end after soldering on the wire. But there is no way on this earth that I can do this by hand. I guess there is a special pair of pliers or similar, but where to get one from?
  13. Make sure on the Mk2 that the brakes are 100% on every wheel and that it can STOP!

The wheel cylinders are aluminum and tend to seize if the brake fluid isn't changed, likewise the same issue can arise in the master cylinder through water in the brake fluid which will cause it to rust, plus of course worn seals in all the hydraulic cylinders.

I believe the Mk4 has calipers, again the same check need to be done, that the brakes are effective.

    Diana

Well, I got offered two ferrets, so I bit the bullet and bought them.

the first one will arrive next week.

its a mk4 ferret and its amphibious ( !! ) and has a turret on the top. It came from the Guards and has done only 6000 miles from new. It's got all its equipment including a radio.

the second one is a mk2 without a turret.

I know nothing about the ferret other than what I see on google.

So why have I bought them? I don't know!

Anyway ,they have been sitting in a very dry, secure premises for about 25 years and I would like some advice please on things to check before I try to fire it up, other than checking the oil and water.

Oh ! goodness knows what I have let myself in for.

  14. Problems - yes plenty - HF & VHF switching noise and its harmonics unless you use super duper filters. Stick to a linear conventional supply.

It has also not been unknown for these things to go up in smoke and our homes are full of them (switching power supplies)
