snowtracdave
A friend has asked me if I could try & find some information : A local museum has been presented with a solid pewter tea service - teapot , milk jug & sugar bowl and would like to know the significance of the inscription . The tea pot is engraved 'Abberton & Langenhoe - For service 1939 - 1945 . Unfortunately there are none left in the village of the generation who might understand the significance of these items . My brother & I both recall our mother having an identical set and after much searching we finally unearthed it this evening . I have asked mum about it but sadly she has suffered from altzheimers for some time now and has no recollection . We wondered if maybe they were given to those who lost family members in the war but there would surely be dozens of them if that were the case. Was it something that only happened here or are there other similar items elsewhere across the country ? Ideas or information greatly appreciated . (Will try & get photo tomorrow if possible) . ArtistsRifles
Abberton & Langenhoe as you likely already know are towns in the Colchester district/area - could it perhaps be something awarded to someone who served with the Home Gaurd or ARP or such on the home front?? snowtracdave
As you probably guessed - it's where I grew up & still live . Those are possibilities although there wasn't a Home Guard section here - the nearest was based in Peldon , one of the neighbouring villages & was the unit dad served with. The tea service we have, I'm sure, belonged to mum's side of the family. Hopefully, on Sunday, I will see the gent who did the research into those remembered on our new war memorial and see if he has come across any more of these tea sets or might be interested in looking into it.
