Joris Posted October 6, 2008 Share Posted October 6, 2008 The road bridge at Arnhem, the ultimate goal of Operation Market Garden was bombed for the third time by the US Airforce and finally destroyed. It's always interesting that what first was the goal of an operation suddenly became a dangerous help to the enemy. The Germans used the road bridge to get reinforcements into the Island where (as Enigma pointed out yesterday) heavy fighting was going on. The Germans tried to take back the island and the Nijmegen road bridge. They failed because of the tough defense by the allied soldiers (including the 101 Airborne). Eventually the Germans had enough and gave up, they waited untill the Rhine was flooding it's banks and then blew the dikes and flooded the most of the land between Arnhem and Nijmegen in (November 1944).
