Over 43 years from the first RAF fighter going into service, and today 1987 sees the first non-stop, unrefuelled flight across the Atlantaic by an RAF fighter.

The plane in question was a Tornado F3 was from Boscombe Down.

The flight distance was 2,200 miles and it took 4 Hours 45 Minutes.

In 1948 it had taken six De Haviland Vampires three days (12th to 14th July) to cross the Atlantic. The six aircraft from 54 Squadron becoming the first jet fighters from any country to fly the atlantic.
