antarmike
Russia pulls out of Moscow, leaving a burning, deserted city for Napoleon Bonaparte's French troops to Occupy this day 1812. A few days previous (7th Sept) had seen the heroic defense of Boridino. This was the largest and bloodiest day of action during the French-Russian war and although Russia retreated the next day, the French losses were so high that this was the last French offensive action of the war. The Russian conserved their remaining forces to eventually drive Bonaparte out of their country. Tchaikovsky was inspired by this day (7th) and wrote the 1812 Overture with its famous Cannon fire finale, to celebrate the Russian success.
