British forces re-occupy Singapore.

 

This is a significant date for our family since my father had been in Singapore when it had fallen to the Japanese, spending the rest of the war as a Japanese POW.

 

In Moscow, the Congress of People's Deputies brings an end the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - and decides to give individual republics their independence.

(although it seems to me it reserved the right to invade them at will)

 

When wound up the USSR was 70 years old.
