Post war military registrations,dumb question...

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I can't find the thread. Can anyone tell me the reason for the format of post war,eg 1960's British military registration numbers? for instance two Land Rovers 20 DM 67 and 93 EL 31,I assume the DM is earlier but can anyone tell me the dates these vehicles entered service from these reg numbers?

According Warpaint Vol 1 which I've just bought, DM is 1961 - 62 B vehicles, EL is 63 - 64 B vehicles.
