antarmike Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Victory over Japan, and their total surrender on this day somewhat overshadows events on the Continent, but Marshall Philippe Petain, head of the Vichy French Government which collaborated with the Germans during World War II, is convicted of treason, and sentenced to death. His sentence is later commuted to life imprisonment. He dies in jail in 1951. Quote
Tony B Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) Petain, from Hero to Zero. I met his grandson at Albert. We had a long talk, his grandfather's sole intention was to prevent the destruction that had happned in 1878 and again in 1914/18. He, like a lot of others, just did not belive England could hold and was trying to make the best deal possible. As for collabearation , that charge is leveled at the States of Jersey and Guernersey from time to time, however they had specific instructions from the King, to act in the best intrest of their populations, when a lot of heavily armed men are tramping up the garden path what do you do?
