Rick W
Came across these pics recently. Ive never seen it being used as an ambulance, and can someone tell me the guns that the other is fitted with? Looks like a bit of a mix from the pic. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o72/rik242_2006/id_m3_halftrack_ambulance_01.jpg[/img] http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o72/rik242_2006/id_m3_halftrack_ambulance_02_sm.jpg[/img] http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o72/rik242_2006/id_m15_multiple_gmc_02_700_t28e1.jpg[/img]
Degsy
Not sure about the Americans but half track ambulances were commonly used by the British. Not sure what that gun combination is Rick but many different combinations were tried out but few went into production. Altogether there were more than 70 variants of the half track including prototypes.
abn deuce
There were several combinations mounted in turrets on half tracks as anti-aircraft defence units the most well know it the quad mount of four fifty cal. heavy barreled browning machine guns others included a 37 mm auto- cannon with 1 fifty cal. heavy barrel browning machine gun. I think as shown in the second photo with a Water cooled barrel there were also 37 mm cannon combined with twin fifty cals. as well but air cooled the second photo looks identical to one on page 33 of the Osprey. GoranWC51
Halftracks were used as ambulances in all theaters. They offered some protection for the patients as opposed to the other softskin ambulances. Here's another nice Medical unit, a GMC CCKW 353 surgical unit. As always, Goran N
