It is a District marking introduced in 1977 to fit in with the "One Army" concept as a result of the 1975 Defence White Paper. This was to get away from the fancy markings & badges of units to help integrate the TA with the Regulars.

12 signifies the Formation which is 12 Sig Gp(V)

12/3 signifies 36 Sig Regt(V)

More on the same subject............................

a small group of us ar setting up an Aid Station display (2x L/R Ambulances a 109 GS (LAD) and perhaps a 109 FFR)

We would like to mark them up for the same unit (Field Ambulance)

Has anyone got any info on unit markings of such a unit (early 1980's

Thanks

Ian

Ian I have a couple of examples of genuine markings, seen on Rover 11 Ambulances in 1980s.

30 FJ 20 (used to own this one) SE/223 on nearside wing, was attached to Shorncliffe Barracks, Dover. Don't worry about stealing its identity, it now masquerades as having served in N.Ireland & has assumed a new 'history' :shake:

07 FL 46, saw this at an official Bovington event, LOND/74 on offside wing

Relatively few vehicles were marked up but at least those are identities that were real.

Cheers all.

Looks like all little Maud would have carried then was the Union Jack on the SO/S front and N/S rear corners.

Can't even refer to past knowledge as 215 RCT(VR) carried the Blue/Yellow square with white bar over on one side and Black square with tower (London District?) whilst the ArtistsRifles® carried no markings what so ever.....

Which reminds me - tucked away somewhere indoors here I'e got a vehicle set (large size for RL or Militant) of the markings for 215 RCT(VR)!!

I will have to try and find them one day....
