At time of going to press we’re nearly ready to award the contract for the catering tender at our new venue. The tender has called for 18-different catering units including vegetarian and gluten-free provisions, with a wide variety of other types of food, plus ice creams and tea/coffee stalls. Food will also be available all day in:

 • The Officers’ Mess restaurant – a 100 seater downstairs restaurant in our Victorian Grandstand – the first one you come to on arrival. This looks to the rear of the grounds, from where you can see the Vintage Village and all its exciting displays and activities!

 • The Battle of Britain Restaurant – a 200 seater restaurant, upstairs in the Main Grandstand accessible also by lift. This has a spectacular view across the front from where you will see the Living History displays, the Arena, classic cars and lots more. It will serve good quality, inexpensive food.

 • The Spitfire Tea-room. This will be run by Joanne and Paul, who own the NAAFI wagon – renowned for its excellent bread and butter pudding! Serving sandwiches, toasties, cream teas, cakes plus tea and coffee/cold drinks, this will be a haven for those who would like to sit down and enjoy a light bite in 40s themed surroundings.

For those staying onsite, breakfast will also be available in the restaurants – more details of all the food options and opening hours will be available in a later edition of the Chronicle.

Well Terry Elliott has done it again – pulling off an incredible plan for entertainment during The War and Peace Revival. Terry was involved with The War and Peace Show for all of its 30-year history and was also the man credited with introducing Living History and the fashion and dance elements to our old show! If you didn't see the interview with him in the 30th anniversary programme last year- read it here so you can learn a little more about the man responsible for your entertainment delights! He’s also working with me on our new Vintage at The War and Peace Revival Facebook page, which has brought a new forum for people interested in the more civilian element of our new show. If you’ve not found the new page, search it out and press Like – then post your photos, questions, ideas and just get involved.
So what’s planned? Well to start with we decided that we’d merge the Veterans and the Victory Marquees into one and rename it the V Marquee. We’d had feedback that some people thought the Veterans Marquee was just for .. well Veterans. Of course this wasn’t true so by bringing the Veterans into the new V Marquee it will get them more involved with what’s going on and make them more accessible to people who’d like to talk to them. They have the most incredible stories and are happy to share them, so if you’ve not talked with any of our wonderful veterans in the past, drop by the V Marquee and introduce yourself to them –it’s really that simple! They won’t be around for ever sadly, so do take some time to talk to them.

The new V Marquee will be hosted each day by Viv the Spiv who will introduce quality entertainment from

 • Paul Harper
 • The Swingtime Sweethearts
 • Adam Hoffman
 • Sincerely Yours
 • Scott Elvis
 • Luna Nightingale and
 • Kitten von Mew

Watch top stylist, Natasha Hall from Pretty Me Vintage show you how to get the authentic retro look without breaking the bank – and will you be one of the lucky audience members who wins a makeover each day? The winner will be whisked off for their transformation, before being brought back to show off their new look in a later fashion feature! Listen each day to the energetic Jive Aces who will be introducing some very special guests, the Satin Dollz - who we are bringing all the way from the USA where their unique blend of vaudeville music and dance is a big hit from coast to coast!

The V Marquee will also be the location for the fabulous cast of “Allo Allo” who once again will be signing autographs and posing for photos. Look out for details on how you can win afternoon tea with them!

We’re delighted that they will be making a special appearance on stage each day for us, truly something not to miss!
Book signings and the opportunity to have conversations with authors have long been a feature of War and Peace and the new show will be no different - find them in our V Marquee. We’re working on broadening the range of authors and titles available – as long as they are relevant to our hobby and interest. Look out in a later edition for names of authors and their books that we’ll be welcoming – and if you have any ideas or suggestions for authors for us to approach, please email bill@warandpeace.uk.com. We've hired Bill Fowler, formerly of Chatham Dockyard, to manage our authors involvement - he will also be working with the veterans and be responsible for Armed Forces Liaison.

In the evening the entertainment continues and you won’t want to miss it! Each night will feature a different theme – including Blues on the Bayou when you can listen and dance to the unique southern sounds of the Cajun Dawgs (try saying that without a southern drawl creeping in!).

There will be two ticketed events this year – one on the Friday the other on the Saturday evening. Friday 19 July welcomes back the Jive Aces with the Satin Dollz in a high energy spectacular, in an evening also featuring a performance by Kitten von Mew. Tickets cost £15 and are available on 01304 813337 or 813945.

On Saturday 20 July we’re upping the mood to the sounds of the John Miller Orchestra in a dine and dance extravaganza. John is the nephew of the iconic Glenn Miller and re-creates all his old tunes. I dare you not to want to dance! The evening will also feature a 1940s floor show while you dine, an “all-comers” jive competition, together with swing music from a trio of top DJs – Terry Elliott, Gypsy John and Jeff’s Two-Tone Boogie! Tickets cost just £25 and are available on 01304 813337 or 813945.

Our brand new entertainment venue, the Dance Hall Days Marquee will be the scene for those who really enjoy a dance. From around midday each day, take part in lessons and watch displays, then try out your moves in a variety of social dances from the 1930s to 1960s. In the evening the Dance Hall takes on a Palais feel each night, with Jump and Jive, Swing, Sixties and Rock and Roll nights; the Swing night features live performances from The Bevin Boys and The Three Belles! To round off the evening, we offer a taste of late night life away from the bright lights of London's West End as we present a sultry Moonlight Revue with a wartime theme.

Another new addition this year is the Jazz Bar, bringing a bit of swing to your life! Hosted by Adam Hoffman, throughout the day will be Jazz singers, with a live house band. On Saturday we welcome local favourites Hullabaloo to bring tempo to your day! We'll have another local live band playing throughout the day on Sunday - further information to follow in the next edition of the Westenhanger Chronicle. There will also be Open Mic auditions for next year’s show each evening – performers by invitation only. Experienced performers are welcome to submit a demonstration cd or performance video to terry@warandpeace.uk.com.

A favourite which we just had to bring forward to the new show is "Ginger's" Bar and Marquee. Always popular with re-enactors at the War and Peace Show, this will provide the usual mix of live tribute bands and popular DJ music to keep the excitement going long into the night.

We’ve so much new this year, I don’t like to keep saying it – but: “another new feature this year …!” Yes there is more! We’re creating a fabulous Vintage Market Place where you can shop till you drop among original vintage and retro clothing, homewares and memorabilia boutiques. This will also be the place for many hair and make up demonstrations – the Hairaid Shelter will be working with the team in the V Marquee on the makeovers and will also be doing demonstrations in the Vintage Market Place. Edelweiss Vintage Hair has also contacted us through Facebook offering a prize of a hair do – more information on this to come in the next edition. Also keep your ears open for entertainment performances during the day in the market place - you never know who you might see …!!
