Found these two clips on youtube showing loading ,unloading and use of airportable equipment ,it does mention the aircraft using a temperary runway to bring in the men and equipment which would make you wonder why the enemy would give up a field that still had some use but enjoy the clips .

very interesting films, thanks, not too sure how the asphalt worked though..

By putting the asphalt on top and then mixing it with the top layer and repeat a couple of times you make a smooth surface , tough enough for temperary use I m sure its a simular method that has been used in concrete road construction if the base soil is sandy gravaly you add cement and water then mix and level .
