D-Day, Debach Airfield 2010 ( a bit late, but I've been busy! )

Recommended Posts

Bodge, Matt, Lynne, dad, and me, travelled south for the annual open day and dance at Debach airfield in Suffolk. Adrian's Sherman was already there when we arrived mid Friday afternoon, and from the moment Bodge arrived, he couldn't stop fondling it.

The weather stayed sunny and warm all weekend, although Saturday evening just as the dance was starting saw a heavy shower. Bodge had been promised a drive of the Sherman on Saturday afternoon, so we spent the morning moving the breakables out of the way. A full driving report will follow in a Pathfinder Magazine soon.

After the Sherman drive, we took a trip out to the 100th BG museum 30 miles North, meeting up with Clive Stevens and Tony Goff ( N.O.S. ), plus a US veteran who Tony was showing around local museums. This was my first visit to Thorpe Abbotts since the 'Operation Bolero' convoy event in 2007!

Sunday started very misty/hazy, so much so, that Maurice Hammond flying his P-51D 'Marinell', had to follow the A140 south until he picked up the twin pylons that led to the airfield. Paul Marriott had his bomb tractor on display along with the bomb trolley train which looked an impressive display.

Also there, I think for the first time, was a M18 Hellcat tank destroyer which displayed along with the Sherman and FV432 in the arena. The arena also saw a convoy of several other vehicle types, with so many taking part, everyone was following someone forming a never ending convoy.

Bodge, Matt, Lynne and myself all stayed over Sunday night to travel on Monday, and survived a storm and a half on Sunday evening with heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and winds that almost lifted the tent off the ground. Thankfully Bodge and Matt make good anchors.

Last few pics from the Flying Clothing store buildings which survive on the edge of the technical site. Some inscriptions still partially survive above the doorways.
