From Friday April 30th till Sunday May 2nd the Screaming Ducks will organise a grand WWII event in Wijk bij Duurstede, Netherlands.

The event will consist of a WWII fieldcamp, USO show evening, road run. The fieldcamp will be located at the harbour on walking distance from the centre of town. In the harbour amphibious vehicles can enter the Lek river and sail to a nearby lake.

On the other side of Wijk bij Duurstede a vast off road terrain is available for vehicles and tank to play around. Also mock battles will be staged here. Because of the size of the terrain tanks can participate in the mock battles too. A bus service will tranport the public from the harbour to the off road terrain.

To give an impression of our most recent event, Operation Burning Flame, I've added some pictures. Pictures of our 2006 event "Back to then" can be found here: http://www.screamingducks.com/Images%2021%20Hemmen%202006/Filmstrip%20Hemmen/index.html

I will add more information on the event here, if you are interested to come over let me know!

Operation Liberty Force 30 april t/m 2 mei 2010

On the 5th of May 2010 it is 65 years ago that Holland had officially been liberated from German occupation. On the 5th of May 1945 the official surrender of all German forces in the Netherlands was signed in the town of Wageningen. 5th of May 2010 is a day of national celebration. The main purpose of this day being to celebrate our freedom and remember those fallen for the freedom we live in today.

We have got a lot of experience in organizing activities, memorials and Living History with World War 2 as main subject. Over the past few years we organised:

-field camp in Normandy 2004 and 2009

-visitor day together with Museum 40-45 in Schaarsbergen

-60th anniversary liberation of IJsselstein in 2005

-One of our major events "Hemmen, Terug naar Toen" in 2006

-Operation Burning Flame in Wijk bij Duurstede in 2007.

Also the welcoming of many national and international veterans over the passed years were highlights we will never forget.

In 2010 we’ll organise a major event starting on Queensday (another public holiday) the 30th of April and will continue the following weekend of 1st and 2nd of May. We will put up camp in the old harbour of Wijk bij Duurstede, directly on the Lek and Nederrijn rivers and close to the recreational lake “Gravenbol”. Here you can float around with your amphibious or boat. On april 30th there will be a beautiful tour for which it is possible to signup separately.

The central theme in event will be the meeting between veterans from World War 2 up until those of today’s conflicts and school children. So we can pass on the memory, to all who fought for freedom worldwide, on to the next generation. Also Dutch military veterans will be part of this event. We will be working together with the Oranjevereniging and the comity remembrance May 4th of the Wijk bij Duurstede town. We will also work together with local associations like the drama association, choirs, the Scottish Pipeband and the theatre. You can think of performances of choirs, a play with World War 2 as a theme. There will also be movies about and from World War 2

We will have;

  • A big field camp with:

  • WWII Tents
  • WWII Equipment
  • WWII Vehicles of which some tanks
  • WWII Vessels
  • Original uniforms

  • Demonstrations of vehicles, equipment and soldiers
  • A big off road terrain for all vehicles
  • A beautiful liberation parade where the competitors will be welcomed like liberators
  • Parachute droppings
  • Veterans

A big celebration in the old city of Wijk bij Duurstede

! There is plenty of space for vehicles, vessels, amphibious material and displays !

Again we think we can make a marvellous event with lots of historical aspects. With moments of remembrance for those who gave their lives for the freedom we live in today and of course with lots of fun.
