    If you want to see other jeeps some of us are at the Riverside Museum of Transport (near SECC) this Saturday all day -I am running a 50+ classic car rally there on the day -10 till 4.

  2. Have you tried Willie Bone WHB in Dumfrieshire he has lots of jeep parts? What do you need to know re renovating etc re books- am not too far away in Glasgow, there are also a few near you in Alexandria/Balloch way

  3. And just when I was going to contact them for the little WW2 LRS workshop museum I was setting up with our LAD lads, we were looking for articles, info on scaling, docs and equipment etc.

  4. We luckily held onto the clansman kit when we heard that Bowman was cancelled for most of TA, so we still have our Comms capability. How much longer before the MOD have to buy back kit previously sold by Withams etc lol?

As a reservist and sorry to see the demise of Borden and other bases, would the Reserve Forces and Cadets Assn (RFCA), who have a lot of real estate, be able to take it over and house it as a trust or custodian funder? My LAD love going down to courses at the REME schools and if closure there what is the alternative? Probably farm out to civvy training providers -everyhing else being farmed out, catering, logistics -soon other arms will become civilianised by the whitehall bean counters.

I once spoke to a REME soldier who served in the Western Desert and was part of the massive inloading of lend lease vehicles arriving in theatre from the US to Port Said, Palestine etc. He said they all arrived OD green etc and used local labour to repaint sand/stone coloured as required - they had 45 gallon drums filled up with (mainly local purchased) paints in matt or similar. They used mainly hand brushes/rollers and spray when available but time was short and were given a quick coating until it looked right to dispatch (the receiving units finished off as required) and the 45 gallon drum was topped up during the day/week and was never consistent depending on what was available at time.

     

    Stencils were the brass issue type or ones made locally out of lino or similar and hastily applied -no Quality Control as long as it could be read by the NCO i/c party -overspray/ghosting was common etc. A lot of further cam was put on by units as required and whatever the orders were for that period (caunter scheme, other patterns etc) that were published at the time. The LRDG for instance, as they progressed from the yellow sands of Egypt, Cyrenaica etc and into the deeper mustard /ochre coloured sands of Tripolitania and into areas (e.g. Tunisia) where some of the sand/ground was more red used oil or similar and made a mud up of the local sands and daubed them onto the vehicles to help cam - as a yellow sand vehicle stuck out against some of the deeper colours - the pink of SAS fame was also taken from similar mixes of dust and sand and this was best over a range of desert as becoming almost invisible in a heat shimmer, mirage like desert plain.

  8. I bet there is a warehouse full of war stock and civil defence items 'just in case' that are ready to be issued at short notice. One depot a couple of years ago found 08 pattern webbing tucked away in an old outbuilding. It makes you wonder what is lying about across the MOD estates that have been forgotten etc.

  9. Yep totally agree, and not clear but the poor mini driver as it pulled back in front of the wrecker had to pull out sharp while the clown went from hard shoulder to same lane. I have slowed this down and blown up frames to try and get the number plate but it is too pixelated -need CSI to look at it I think lol.

     

    All the other cars in the stream passing us were travelling sensibly but this guy came up far too fast and luckily (??) had a space to go into and not hit the rear end of the car to my right, that coupled with impatience cause accidents where they get off and someone else pays for it with their lives.

     

    If I had their number it would have been passed onto police and not youtube

  10. Interesting post Gary......and the YouTube clip shows what we are dealing with (whether in MVs or in modern cars).

     

    I'd seen the MVPA triangle in their magazine.

    They also do convoy signs as well for the rear vehicles that are quite big and noticeable etc

  11. I was issued one in 74 as a Para Regt recruit, still serving TA now after 37 years. It was the white 37 pattern type with broad arrow on it. Inside was buttons (metal and green plastic) thread and grey wool for darning, some needles and sewn onto inside flap was a bit of green material similar to the KF shirt - I presume for putting needles into for storage, some later types issued were the green rubberised holder (similar to the wash kit holdall) but with same contents -still have it up loft along with the black plimsolls, sausage bag, green gloves, string cellular Y fronts and vests and the infamous blue short etc - deep joy and memories lol

After some maniac drivers almost running into back of me I fitted the large MVPA warning triangle (off MVPA website shop)with a flashing LED (now upgraded to 2 small square ones) as shown in picture. One of the incidents was a fast driver trying to overtake then cutting between me and wrecker in front along hard shoulder and back out almost wiping out a mini that was overtaking legally at the time - see it here, apologies for poor quality but in open jeep filming at time. The waving flags help as well for people to notice.

     

    The other main hazard is all the drivers who try to pass you when taking photos on their phone/camera etc
