When I had my 80" Dunsfold claimed they could build completely new 80" from NOS stock apart from Chassis which would need to be supplied and repaired. I don't know whther their stocks of NOS still hold up, but they were heavily in series 1's

Also look out for starter motor troubles. You should have the starter with the short nose on it. Later starters will not fit due to the bellhousing.
Later starters fit early models if you open a hole on the Bell Housing!

633 Squadron is full of incorrect vehicles, when 2 officers are watching the aircrews training they are standing next to a Series 1 Land Rover, There is a scene where some top brass arrive at the guard room and a Mini drives past the entrance to the airfield, The tractor pulling the bomb trailers is a 1950s Fordson Major and there is a Land Rover safari in the background. This film has so many cock-ups in it, e.g a pilot that was killed in a training accident is sitting in the front row at the mission briefing, if I watch it now I am on a constant look out for more errors.

see post #15, The only LandRover identified in 633 by the International movie car database (http://www.imcdb.org/)was a series 2 109"( which you mention) , If you have a photo of the series 1 I will uipload it to movie database...
(these guys go through each film frame by frame. If there is a series 1 in 633 Sqrdn I would have thought they would have known.)

Surely if Air is 78% Nitrogen, and these molecules are too big to escape, then a tyre filled with air can only delate to 78%, ie all the nitrogen Molecules are retained. If you wait until all the tiny Oxygen molecules have escaped before you refill the tyre with air you are replacing the missing 22% with a mixture containing 22% oxygen and 78% Nitrogen. The oxygen in the tyre after one re-pressurisation now only contains 22% of 22% Oxygen, (instead of the original 22% of 100?)or 4.84% oxygen.
This means the tyre is already 95.16% Nitrogen. if you then wait until all this oxygen escapes, then refill with air you are putting in 22% of 4.84% or 1.065% of the total content of the tyre. Nitrogen will then be 98.4% of the total.
Let this tiny bit of Oxygen squeeze out through the tube and refill with air and you will have nigh on Pure Nitrogen in your tyre (Well 99.75%) , and it only cost you a bit of waiting....Or so it seems to me....
Could it be that most people have nigh on pure Nitrogen in their tyres without even realising it??

another possibility is it may have the Land- Rover badged Hill Lushington hydraulic winch, driven from the hydraulic PTO or the Bottom Hydraulic PTO both of which would bolt onto a series one transfer gearbox.

Seeing as compressed air is mostly Nitrogen, I can't see any compatibility problems, (cynically since compressed air is mostly Nitrogen can't see any possible advantage in using Nitrogen......)

I had tyres filled with Nitrous Oxide, Advantage/ they didn't feel any pain if they got punctured.....

Just started sorting out rear lights. Mine has Fog Lights mounted on the rear body, above the cross member. Could this have been a military mod? The brackets they sit in appear to be the same green paint as the rest of the body. Has anyone else got these foglights?

You say that the winch would not be a standard fit? Would that mean that this is something added once the vehicle came out of service, or that it might have been limited issue e g REME?

If it is the Fairey 5000 Drum winch, I don't believe it was available during series 1 production, the only fitting details I have seen are for the series 2 and later.
I once fitted one to an 86" series 1 but I had to chop the winch mounting around to move the winch over about an inch. Only then would the propshaft clear the Sump/ crankshaft joint on the series 1.
I doubt Army would have gone for retro fitting a winch when the vehicle is alraedy getting old and coming up for release.
The normal winch to see on a Series 1 is either a Mayflower MAP Capstan (later sold badged as Fairey), or an Aeroparts Capstan winch. Both these are driven from the Crankshaft, so not what I would call PTO driven winches.
I had on my 80" a rear mechanical PTO and I had fitted to this the Aeroparts rear Capstan winch. This is a true PTO winch but so rare it is unlikely to be one of these. I sold mine to Dunsfold, for a museum vehicle.
Have a read through this link to find out a bit more on the types of Capstan winch that may have been found on series 1 land-Rovers.
I can't think I have ever seen a picture of a Military Series 1 that has a winch fitted. (that will get the twitchers looking through photographs, and I expect we will have 50 pictures by tomorrow night!)

I can't remember the changeover date from 1600cc to 2,000 cc but my 1953 80" had the 2 litre....
Memory tells me 1948 to 1951 had the 1.6 litre engine but 1952/ and 53 80 inchers had the 2 litre engine.
Need a chassis number probably to be sure of engine size.
I gave up running mine because of constant valve seat failures even running on the 2 star available at the time. I suppose hardened valve seats could be fitted, but with standard valve seats you will need a Lead Replacement additive that actually works.
Winch is probably the Fairey 5000 drum winch, and as far as I know was never standard fitment on Military spec vehicles. Some early Series had the Turner front bumper Drum winch, but these weren't PTO driven, (ie not driven through the gearbox) Instead had a disconnectable drive from a modified started dog on the front of the crank.

.... Soviet T34's ?? at the climatic crossing of the bridge dressed as german vehicles in Force Ten from NavaroneYup, but how representative is that,... On a technical point, the T34s were all Diesel and virtually all of the German formations would have been suppied with Petrol which would have made re-supply somewhat of a logistical problem. Even Petrol supply was hard enough!
Someone will know the numbers, as the Germans documented everything to great detail.
Another batch of Photographs showing T34's in German hands, and by the look of it actually in German Service. (Kill rings painted on the gun Barrels of at least 3 T34's is pretty conclusive they are actually fighting with the Germans....

I can't believe the sheer number of T34's used by the Germans, and the wide variety of units operating them!! nor the time period 1941 to 1945, and info on T34/85 also in German hands and in use.

Parts book seems to show a steel plate stiffener ( Front Spreader Plate 582492) that is sandwiched between guide bush and bumper, and then two narrow stiffeners on the inside ( Vertical spreader, inner/ Outer 598672 / 598673).
Looking at photographs, I cannot see the external stiffening plate (582492) on other Nokken 101's
Mike,Putting the return edge on the plate as per parts diagram picture would necessitate enlarging the plate 3/8-1/2inch or so. That would then interfere with the removal of the front grill from it's clip. Probably why non of the ones I've seen match the parts book.
Flat plate it is then|I thought I would try and see if the stiffener would work with a return edge, as per diagram in Parts catalogue, and yes it does fit, and the grill still opens past it, and closes into the clips without problems.

IF the photo is genuine I am totally gob smacked that the shock wave is so visible.

You sure about the D2 Mike? All my information gives the D4 as the smallest tractor used. The D2 is pretty useless for much construction work....

lot of vehicles have an inter vehicle connection socket, (or Slave socket) so that a special concentric jump lead can connect good batteries in one vehicle to low or flat batteries in another.
I don't know if this is what you refer to?

Maybe, I am not that much of a film buff. My 80 had Standard external door handles ( as did all late 80's) but my door tops came from an early one, and these had canvas flaps to reach internal handle. So yes entirely possible that it is an 80 with external handles and flaps!
In fact I was sorting through old Landy bits, looking for a badge for my new'un when I found a spare (genuine) external door handle for an 80, so if anyone wants one.......
