  1. Knock on the door an hour ago "DHL" Driver says "have you got A Tractor?"

I tell him no, but go to see what he wants, His Sprinter has slipped off the driveway to my neighbours, and is headed in the general direction of their fishing lake. Every attempt to move has slid him nearer the slope to the lake.

    Excuse to Play!

So up to the shed and fetch the Douglas.

Unfortunately there is a gateway very close to where we are and it takes several shuffles to get into a suitable position, only to find a Sprinter has nothing on the back to pull off (if you still want a spare wheel carrier after the operation).

Decide on going round a rear road spring, and tying the rope to my anchor to keep it low and below the rear steps of the Merc.

A short pull/ reposition and another pull and the Merc squeezes past the gate posts by about six inches as it rolls back onto the drive way.

I am glad I got the diff changed last week, while I was unable to get into work!

  2. If out in a Militant , Matador etc, or most other Air braked vehicles of this period, remember to put Air brake system antifreeze in the alcohol evaporator.

More modern vehicles have Air Driers to prevent air brake valves freezing. Older vehicles do not. Remember some versions, (Matador etc) have a gland nut you can slack off so you can slide a sleeve up and down, to expose or cover the wick. The Alcohol Evaporator will oly work if the wick is exposed!

The wick covered position is to save alcohol in the evaporator, on days when it is not freezing.

  3. I understand the merit in removing snow.

My concern was as to how without breaking a H&S law concerning removing snow above 2 meters?

Will you get excempt from H&S in this case to make it possible to abey trafic laws?

Or will you be forced to stay home?

I expect the view of officialdom is you can't move with snow on an artic trailer roof, and you can't clear it safely so either get someone in with a cherry picker to clear it, or park up until it melts.

  4. The local rumour is several people have been stopped by the police and been given £60 on the spot fines for driving with snow on the roof. They reckon that roof should be swept clean before setting out on any journey.

Ho, Ho Ho, and goodwill to all men, don't spring readily to mind....

  5. Does Hendon charge? whats the proper address and department tow write to? We have two ex RAF vehicles, an LR 90 and at least one Bedford.

    No it is free.

    http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/contact/

I just e-mailed them using the form above, and they came back in about a week with record card for my 101

Their address is on the Contact URL, don't write to the Chetwynd address in the first link!

  6. Water isn't free from the tap unless you have managed to dodge paying the bill with you're utility company. If you can sell it onto the yuppy set good on ya they deserve it.

If you are not on a water meter, the First egg cup of water costs a hell of a lot, but everything after that is free!

Once you have paid for the first drop, everything after that comes free,, in fact you pay exactly the same if you don't turn the tap on for a year, or if you drink a bathfull everyday, to me that makes it free!!

  7. hi im very happy with my little suzuki jimny convertable 1.3 engine very econmical starts every morning and goes anywhere a landy will or even further as its not as wide. as long as you drive it right only me getting on and off our large inclined estate . im more than happy with mine :-)

It might be narrower but it doesn't have the same clearance under the axles.

I was once with an early LJ80 driving in the snow filled woods. The snow was days old and had the sun on it so that the surface had melted and refrozen several times, we were driving across this snow, riding on the crust, when it let go and the Suzie fell through, except it only fell to the floor pan, which rested on the crust. The wheels were still 8 inches of Terra Firma.

We didn't have a shovel so we spent an hour dragging out snow with sticks, until the crust under the floor pan had lost sufficient support for it to collapse.

    One lesson learnt!

  8. Where is the best place to aplly for the vehicle history/record? Is it just the tank museum or is there other places?

    Its for my friends stalwart.

    Thanks

    Shaun

Army Softskin, eg. Stalwart, should be RLC Museum Deepcut, Plant etc Eager Beaver Forkliftetc RE Museum Chatham, RAF vehicles RAF Museum Hendon.

  9. I am running an old Isuzu Trooper with the 2.77 engine. It cost £500, and has 125000 on the clock but the engine is perfect. They rust, but I have found it cheap 40+ MPG on longer runs, and it suits me cos I can weld....

  10. 101crossmember001-1.jpg

Holes (s) A used to attach Bumperette. Hole(s)B unused.

    101crossmember002-1.jpg

Front of cross member showing elongated hole through which it would be possible to feed winch rope if the winch were on that side of the vehicle.

    101crossmember004-1.jpg

This is the other side showing path of winch rope through identical slot.

    101crossmember003.jpg

LHS Winch Bumperette showing fixing bolts, and of you look through the big hole in it you will see the fixing holes for the narrower non winch bumperette.

    101crossmember003flipped.jpg

Above I have mirrored the last pic to show how a mirror image winch bumperette would fit on RHS using holes B, not holes A.

Was there some subtle "cunning and devious plan" to bring the winch rope to this corner, by extra pulleys sat on top of the chassis, so that you could get a better winching angle if needed, or is it just a case of having these extra holes just because nobody knew what they were doing?

I am tempted to close in all these holes when I repair the cross member since they are only another way for mud and crap to get into the cross member to rust it out from the inside!

  11. Just had a look at the pictures of my old one - the only thing in the area you are referring to is the back step - perhaps mine is different (was a mortar carrier and therefore had no winch)

As far as I know there was only one chassis for all the 101 variants.

The elongated hole is almost hidden by the right Bumperette, About 1/8" to 3/16" only shows emerging from behind the Bumperette. Only clearly visible when the Bumperette is unbolted. The two bolt holes holes for the wider bumperette are about an inch to inch and a half nearer centre of cross member than the inner fixings of the RHS bumperette, and should be clearly visible, even with the bumperette in place..

  12. Complete shot in the dark - for the power take off to drive the powered trailer?

No the Power take off comes through the middle of the towing connection..

On the powered trailer version, a Nato hitch fitted centrally in a round socket in the middle of the cross member to tow unpowered trailers, and this was held in place by a chain that closed around it. Slacken the chain and you pull the Nato Jaw out of the socket, and the nose of the Powered trailer is entered into the circular hole, and clamped by the same chain. The drive comes through the centre of this arrangement.

I am talking about slots and holes on the RHS of cross member, roughly behind and outside the R.H. Chassis rail.

  13. I have just started to repair the rear cross member of the 101.

Can anyone tell me why the right hand side of the rear cross member is a mirror image of the left hand side?

If that is a daft question, what I mean is the winch sits on the left hand chassis rail, and can be fed forward or rearwards. There is therefore an elongated slot for the winch rope to pass through the left hand side rear cross member. Since some 101's were winch equipped and others were not, there are two sets of holes for the left hand rear bumperette, because the winch fairlead bumperette is wider than the non winch equipped bumperette.

The fuel tank sits on the right hand chassis rail, the Winch PTO feeds to the winch on the left. Even on a left hand drive vehicle, the winch could not have been fitted to the right hand chassis rail. The Transfer gearbox's asymmetrical design prevents making a PTO feeding to the right.

The rear cross member has however a mirror image slotted hole to feed the winch rope through, and also has holes to suit the two widths of rear bumperette, I.E. there is provision to fit a wide bumperette with winch Fairlead cylindrical hole, on the right side of the rear cross member.

What mental aberration lead Land-Rover to put all the holes, and fixing points on the right hand side of the rear cross member to take a winch bumperette, when there is no way the winch could have fed to this point?

  14. NPR cameras btw cannot read older pre '72 non reflective white on black reg plates

and I haven't seen one of those on the roads around here for years apart from two guys who run around on an old Matchless and a BSA. (apart from vehicles off to rallies etc.)

Number plate cameras will catch 99.9% of the untaxed offenders around here.
