  1. About an inch or maybe 2 here (Greatstone). Our Newfie loved his walk on the beach this morning, cold winds and snow means he can run a lot longer without overheating. Perfect wind for kitesurfing as well, not having a Winter wetsuit means I'll just have to watch:embarrassed:
  2. Ouch http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/83029613#KE7uwUWaB2RGkuk2.01
  3. Even the way the batteries are connected can cause problems, not really an issue with 2 batteries but in a marine situation where 4 or more batteries are linked the resistance across the connections causes problems.
  4. Well that contradicts the governments website. https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot however I haven't found detail on the registration process
  5. Without going in to it too much...technically you are correct because gel batteries are supposedly more robust. However the problem comes from discharging one battery more than the other, therefore, either the least discharged battery gets fully charged and the most discharged doesn't see a full charge, or vice versa, and the most discharged battery gets a full charge and the least discharged gets cooked. Gel batteries are much more sensitive to charge voltage than conventional wet cell batteries though.
  6. According to the link I posted earlier from the "government website" you only need a tacho on a vehicle under 7.5t if used commercially. However that link may be out of date, and the rules changed in the last 6 months, as I didn't need one for my RB44
  7. Not the best idea, causes lots of problems with one battery being discharged/ charged more than the other. This is a common problem in the marine industry with big battery banks, and the source of many headaches for boat owners.

  9. Its not your licence that is the problem, as soon as you go over 7.5 t the vehicle has to comply with the larger HGV regs, tacho etc. Under 7.5t you can get it MOT'd easier class vii (not less stringent, just more availability of testers). Tacho=http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Transport_Theme_files/HGV_Tachograph_Exemption_Declaration_Form_0510.pdf note the under 7.5t and not for carriage of goods
  10. Fairly straightforward as its under 7.5t, you "may" need under run bars, class vii mot, so you need to book in advance which may take some time. See my thread on this very process http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?32275-Proving-age-of-vehicle-when-registering Make sure you have the cast cert from the MOD as this will make the process much easier.
  11. If it's just for shows then derate it to 7.5tons, still costs money though (suspension mods and under run bars), but tacho exempt.
  12. It looks like it, if only the number was visible to find out which one. Thanks very much.
  13. Looks remarkably similar, thanks very much.
  14. Grandfather took these during his service. Might be of interest to some. I believe these are from the North Atlantic run. I'm sure I should know this one but I haven't done any research at all yet. Likewise this one This one however does have some identification on the back, HMS Premier, I'm really not sure how this managed to land though, one very very lucky pilot. reverse of picture and a link to the tale of HMS Premier http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/ESCORT/PREMIER.htm hope you enjoy.
  15. Ether, mmmm thanks, maybe I'll just wind her over then, don't really want to start using that. cheers
  16. Any Idea of what the cold start fluid/gas is. No problems with the electrics or fuel, but it has been bl**dy cold down here, she took a few more turns on the crank than normal to get started last week.
  17. I hear Wales is quite cheap, you might just fit them in over there. Oooopp North it's about £10 a week per vehicle in a locked compound, I'm sure you could find a similar deal, try caravan storage or similar.
  18. This is whats known as a MK1 RB44 using a Transit body, its where many of the myths about RB44's started. http://www.fire-engine-photos.com/picture/number20923.asp The Dodge 50 site has the full MOD workshop manual on there free to download. The axles are DANA 60's I think, plenty of them fitted to full size Yank pick-ups if you're after spares (not the brakes though). The Cab is straight from an 80's American Dodge Van so doors furniture, handles, windows and the like are easy and cheap to source.
  19. +60 miles so if your vehicle does 10mpg your looking at less than £40 extra. Not really the end of the world considering the annual running costs of these vehicles. I understand if you have several vehicles this could mount up but if you can afford several vehicles............... Any change is going to receive criticism, but people complain if shirt buttons aren't done up correctly
  20. I used to use a tube heater in my Dayvan with great success, it was stored outside without a cover in all weathers, kept the the damp and mould away completely and as you say only 60w so fairly cheap to run. Quite handy for the car in winter as well, keeps the windows from frosting up too badly.
  21. Have you looked at Hydraulic ram repair companies these for example http://hydrauliccylinder1.co.uk/Hydraulic-Cylinder-Bellows
