  1. Having read the entire thread, but based entirely on Mark's post above... I wanna go next year:D

    Sounds fantastic.

Is there any provision for someone without an MV () to come and camp? I assume not, judging by the lucky dip the camping seems to be, but thought I'd ask.

I'll just have to stowaway in the back of a Jimmy or something instead!

You can camp in one of the fields not to far away from the show and still have access to the show when it closes to the general public.

  2. Yes they put mine on the rollers, i thought they would do a road test threw me at first.

Thats mine in the pics 96 KJ 65 with an in service ding left in the wing, i have seen the panthers head on a few vehicles often wondered what unit/group used it.

you can start having fun with the RB44 now.

    cheers Ian

The reason I wanted to ask about the rollers is that I thought that the vehicle was permanent 4WD. Which mustn't be the case I'm presuming that 4WD comes in when the vehicle is switched to low range? Shows how little that I know about these vehicles.

That ding is alright at least its not as bad as ours makes it look its been used. Ours served with the RAF and even had some bits and pieces from its last exercise in 2008.

I'm going to sort out the registration with the DVLA tomorrow plus buying tax and number plates. The missus wants to drive it at the weekend with a possible first show at Woodvale we'll see.

  3. Well done

Sorry for the late reply just got back from W&P by a sheer fluke i managed to park opposite another Boughton never even saw it until parked up.

Lots of interest shown to both.

    Ian.

No sweat I had an idea that you might have gone to W & P. With more coming out of service many more RB's will be appearing at shows.

How did Vosa test you're brakes was it on the rollers?

  4. I like that last picture with the white poles sticking out off the bumper I was planning on doing that for missus / me, just until I get used to where the bumper is.

  5. Has he checked the clearances on the valves if thats what he thinks it is?

One of the rocker arm bushes might have worn causing the clacking noise, whichever way having a look see is his only option even if just to rules one possible cause out.

  6. Oh no John you've got completely the wrong idea.

    Canvasrepair3.jpg

When I first asked about repairing canvas a few years ago I missed this bit... it goes without saying that I'm the labourer. The Land Rover has gone and an RB requires a canvas repair.

I'm just waiting for the thread to come via ebay. I have a few pictures to upload of canvas repairs none of them match the 'official' way of doing it I might add!

  7. I am suspecting now that my right front brake problem isn't a matter of adjustment but a matter of a seized wheel cylinder. Is this a common problem? I ordered a pair so I can replace it if needed. Anybody have experience with this problem?

If you remove the cylinder from the backplate and have an assistant pump the pedal, you should be able to see if it moves (handbrake off). Don't worry the cup and seal won't pop out.

It could also be a collapsed brake hose which is permitting fluid to pass but not return.

If it doesn't move clean as much muck out as you can from the cylinder with a brake cleaning spray and then try boiling it up in a can of water. With a bit of luck it should move in which case you can squeeze the brake cylinder fingers and pump the brake pedal to get more movement. This is only a short term answer you would be better having the cylinders relined in stainless steel.

  8. Nice one Andy

Looking forward to seeing it on the road. How much is road tax?

£95 I think soon find out when I go down to the DVLA in Old Trafford just as soon as pay day comes

  9. I know there have been a few posts around this subject, but, I may have just hit a deadend here.

I sent off a v888 (I think it was) which gives the DVLA's knowledge of the history of the vehicle, hoping that the mil reg may have been used at some point during its registration for civvy street.

The info has come back that it was sold by A F Budge Ltd in 1994 with the following info.

    mil. sale no. 69MS57,

mil reg is given as unknown.

The chassis no. is ALV915 (which is stamped on the escape hatches too.)

Alvis saracen ACV AFB 132 (stock number?)

    Engine no. 6A/L 02130

According to a letter from the DESO, MOD, the saracen has a date into service on June 1959.

It was then sold to a Dr Elton A Eckstrand of Ayrshire, then to the M Q Trust of Gravesend, then onto the previous owner to me.

Does anyone know of a way forward from here? Maybe I can narrow it down to an individual contract with the date in service?

Thankyou for any help, much appreciated.

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

For the history the first stop should be the librarian at Bovington but that presumes that you have the military reg. If you haven't been able to obtain the reg by sanding down the areas where the reg is likely to be you're snookered.

What might be worth having a go at is contacting the previous owners, I suspect that budge might be a none starter especially if they were the ones that renovated the vehicle.

  10. Hi Ian,

Thanks for the help that you gave via the pm it was much appreciated and I'm glad to say that the RB passed its MOT this morning:-D

The only thing that I had to alter was the headlight alignment which the guy helped with by going for a wander while I altered it.

    Well chuffed!

  11. Looking at the spec for that fuel tank, you might need another pay day too :D

I have to fit a locking cap or flap over the filler to stop the lovely people siphoning the fuel off!

  12. Hi Andy, might be worth an email to Morris Oils Tech Dept to see which of the three ISO32 oils they produce that they would recommend. We use their products in construction and agricultural plant and have found their Tech people to be very helpful and knowledgeable.

Will do (thanks) when I have some pennies to spend pay day can't come quick enough

  13. OK, OM33 was the standard hydraulic oil for the army's plant, tipping gear, recovery vehicles, cranes, and so on. You will find that it equates to the civilian recognised grade of ISO32, available all over, from agricultural dealers, etc. This is the universal grade for plant (unless it is something special).

    ........and it is not coloured.

Thanks Richard I'll see about finding some

    Thanks for you're efforts Chris

  14. Hi Chris and Clive,

Thanks for the info its much appreciated.

Its MOT time for the RB at Vosa in Chadderton on Monday morning the rush hour traffic should be interesting

Chris did you find out what OM33 is? Reading Clive Elliotts PDF it says that OM33 is a hydraulic fluid?

  15. I have managed to get hold of the maintenance schedule for the RB44 (off ebay) but I don't know what the civvy specs for the oils/fluids are. Help

    Engine 0MD90

    Gearbox OEP 220 (EP90)

    Steering power assisted OM33

  16. It is currently fitted out as a camper with sink, stove and bed. However since I only have a cat B license I can't drive it laden so can't use it as a camper. I have a caravan for that anyway. It does not have the original engine but is fitted with a later Chevy engine. To make things fit it has Land Rover clutch master and slave cylinders and uses electric fans. It needs some TLC but it starts and runs OK.

I have only found very few discussions about CMP's here - possibly because it is not possible to search for "CMP".

How much does it weigh is it over three and half tons? If it is wouldn't you be able to drive without the cat C licence being that its a pre 1960 goods vehicle?

How would you be driving it laden if everything is screwed down does it become part of the structure? :undecided:

Just a thought or two that needs to be explored for you by some of the others on the forum
