  1. According to my info. 01DC76 is in contract KL/A/0200. and this contract only went as far as 01DC86. KL/A/0248 followed starting with 00DD01. I got the contract numbers from an issue of Classic Military Vehicle. issue number 113 oct 2010. aaah my head hurts. HELP!!!

Great response guys, thanks, will get to the bottom of this yet.

That doesn't mean that its the full list of the contracts my Ferret 08BB48 isn't listed but the contract that it was built in is 6/fv/14231. If you notice on the list its missing registrations as well.

  2. it will be interesting to see what comes out of the hull as it looks like no one has tidied it since it came out of the forrest in finland, there were cartridge cases scattered about the turret basket floor, you never know there might even be live rounds aswell, a sten gun would be nice :cool2:

Suspect that the five year prison sentence wouldn't be agreeable though, you might come out with some extra skills!

  3. hi fella's

the latest plan for the cromwell is to remove the engine and box and get them looked at, i'd hoped to chuck a bit of fuel down the carb and bump it. (you can take the man out of the REME but you can't take the REME out of the man) but it seems this is too risky and could damage the engine so i'll have to be boring and do it by the book although i have to concede this is the best course of action and in the long run will make for a more pleasureable experience of owning the beast it just seems so long winded and potentially expensive but hey it's only money :D

    all the best

Good advice that it will save you money in the long run. Good time to to clean the engine bay out and get at any of the electrical system.

  4. The tank museum won't be able to help unfortunately as they only have the army registration numbers and without that they won't be able to provide any history.

The first batches had the registrations and hull numbers in sequence but as soon as foreign orders for the Ferret came in the hull numbers didn't follow in any kind of sequence. Try Matt (toolman) on this forum he is compiling a list of hull numbers and registrations. Think Matts having fun as well with a similar problem.

  5. Thanks for that info Andy, I pressume you have the Ferret on an auction site?

I have just found this link on there: http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/intercoms_&_radios.htm

There is a picture in the Clansman black label section, but still no name or mark no. or date.

I dont want it in my '84 FFR 109 if it is wrong, so more research need.

    Getting there.....................

No thats another Andrew funnily enough I went to have a look at it in Leeds when it was for sale with the seller Andrew confusing I'll wrap myself up in knots:-)

  6. I went to the Frome booty yesterday, picked up a MK6 and this one for a fiver each, but I cant identify the radio helmet from the net, its a Racal with numbers 'STH TYPE 8810'.

Can anyone identify and place an approximate year please, and would it have gone with Clansman gear?

    Thanks

    Terry

It will work with Clansman and if you have the right box you can set the mics to live (on all the time). These headsets have the pressell (ptt) incorporated into the lead which is the round circular thing with the clip on the back.

I don't know the year/s that they were used I remember seeing them for sale five years ago on an American website so its pre 2005. How long were they were out of service before then???

Pre ANR I think so its the black faced Clansman boxes

  7. hi fella's

thanks for taking the time to reply, the cromwell will be original but probably not done as a mk 6, i would prefer a gun tank so if i can get hold of a 75mm or 6 pdr gun that would be my prefered option and yes the engine will be a meteor not something from a datsun and as a token of good will from the purists i'd appreciate a whip round for the petrol money:D

my plan is to use the turret and ring from the centaur and nail it onto the charioteer then chuck a bit of green paint at it and it's job done, well that's the theory anyway, my real concern is the width of the thing and all that c & u bumph, i tried to get my head round the regs but gave up after the third paragraph and owing to the fact that it's 10 ft wide i don't think it would get past the dvla so is there a way to get it on the road for a & e.

    cheers

    eddy

What size of nails will you be using?

B&Q do trade packs :nut: and metric nuts and bolts just to annoy the purists:cool2:

  8. Fine driving on the road we went to Malvern and back without any problems. Nice and comfy and easy to drive MPG is about 20 to the gallon but they cruise quite happily at 56 mph with or without a load. With a load I thought that the vehicle drove even better no bouncing about.

In the last tender sale on of the podded RB's had four 9 by 9 tent canvases in the pod with one set of poles. That would have been a belter to buy it could have almost paid for itself.

  9. I used to have a larkspur harness in my ferret. I couldn't afford a radio for it, and needed the room. I'm sure I managed to get an I box, which allowed me to use the Larkspur harness and the headsets. I can't remember much about it though. The larkspur headsets are not as good quality and they are much harder to hear than the more modern Clansman units. They would be more in keeping with a 1950s vehicle though.

It wouldn't be the O box would it? That kind of rings a bell somewhere

  10. Andy,

Thanks for your comments, the idea of a bridge to support the engine is just a precaution and an aide for the job, I remember those brackets you describe and I cant say that their strength fills me with confidence.

    R

If you leave the engine in and the petrol tank more the petrol tank really you won't have anything to attach the chain too. Those center mounts r quite strong but I added a piece of wood under the fluid flywheel as a precaution as I quite like my fingers on my hand.

I'm sure that I have seen an engine running without the gearbox attached in the hull and balanced on those mounts. Doesn't mean that its correct or safe though and in the end its what keeps you're fingers and thumbs safe that matters.

Funny how people ram rod a job and small details get ommited that come back to bite one in the derriere.

    R

    Isn't that the truth!

  11. Looking at your posts all sounds reasonable.

We have, regretably to do this job as we found out today.

So to recap, one has to support the engine before starting. So in my mind I am going to make up a bridge to fit over the engine bay with a chain and hook mechanism with a thread involved so that I can get the tension on the engine before undoing the gearbox assy from it.

    Any comments on that idea?

    R

More likely you would want to place a piece of wood under the gearbox where it meets the engine. With it pushed in tightly it makes it easier to pull the box back without it sliding on the painted floor. The engine should be held in place by the center mounts that 'r' attached to the base of the battery boxes. Presuming the mounts 'r' in place that is...

If you can get a long extension bar for the socket set (approx 2ft long) it makes it easier to undo the two lowest nuts on the bottom of the gearbox. At least thats what I have found.

  12. Take a few tools with you as its common for the headlights to be misaligned and make sure that the wheel nuts r all tight.

Class 7 MOT is incorrect its a visit to a ministry testing station every year my missus works for a truck repair company and they took all the RB44's for testing at a ministry testing station. Which was another reason why I wasn't bothered about the 'brake problems' I got the info direct from the mechanics who repaired the vehicles.

If you take it anywhere else for the MOT the DVLA can invalidate the MOT certificate when you go to register the vehicle for the 1st time and you won't have any pennies returned and will still have to go for a ministry test.

Best thing to do is ring them up and ask and let them talk through the procedure for the 1st MOT. I found them very helpful same with the DVLA in Manchester. I printed out pictures of the chassis and axle weights when I sent the forms into VOSA.

Axle weights by the drivers door next to the chassis plate.

Don't loose the cast certificate as its the only one that you will receive from Withams.

Take everything with you including the plating certificate when you register the vehicle on the V55. Don't forget a valid form of ID passport or driving licence, utility bill, insurance certificate, cheque book and a friendly face. Basically what ever they deem necessary to get it registered. Friendly face isn't on the form but it does help
