  1. Hi,

The Hazard warnings do not work on our Ferret - I've investigated and the problem lies with the switch - which no one appears to have. I belive it can be repaired as the problem is simply the small relay built into the switch which I plan to substitute, the current relay has disintegrated.

Has anyone got the circuit? and before I get bombarded with "go look at http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/" the circuits there do not have the wiring for the hazard warning switch - despite the website saying so. only the indicator wiring minus the hazard circuit.

I have looked at every circuit possible I can find and none refer to the hazard warning switch.

Deleted the bit about the hazard warning circuit

  2. If you want to see the Jordanian upgrade, you might consider asking The Light Dragoons ( http://www.lightdragoons.org.uk/regiment_today/index.php ) very nicely if they might allow you to look at their "gate guardian" (not really a gate guardian, cos it's inside Robertson Barracks, Swanton Morley) presented by their Colonel in Chief, King Abdullah.

I cannot promise you the LD Ferret features the Jordanian upgrade - I didn't know they'd done one until five minutes ago. And AFAIK my 360 degree photo set of said Ferret turned up nothing that screamed, "I don't remember that on a Mark 2 Ferret" at me. But King Abdullah has only been Colonel in Chief since HRH The Princess Diana died, so I figure the Ferret he presented must have been quite late.

This was supposed to be the one that had been 'gifted'. Or I was told that this was the one. I thought that the exhaust exited out the other side?

  3. I would hazzard a guess that the quantity was always small when manufactured. Small by manufacturers standards. They would have made hundereds of thousands of Normal '58 Webbing. This I would say IMOHO is because 'The Regiment' during normal peacetime holding. never really had more than 650-700 personell serving at anytime (Neil can correct me here if im wrong!) To that effect, only hundereds would have existed & be used by 'The Regiment' only. They would most certainly NOT have been general issue to the Rest of the Army!

There is a very close variant of these twin mag pouches. They are IDENTICAL in construction but a lighter shade of green webbing material. These are from the '44 pattern web sets & were made for the Stengun. They look ENTIRELY the same, except for the colour. The down side of this is, they ALSO are very scarce! I do not even have an example in my own collection! :embarrassed:

So through a fluke we'll call it a fluke I may or may not have a bit of kit that was destined for 'the regiment'.

    Thanks

  4. The new foldaway tank built as cheaply as possible by British bankers.... pity that they only funded one side of the 'new' foldaway tank the other side was cancelled by HM government due to budgetary constraints caused by those dodgy bankers

  5. I recently bought a Distribution box (Inter vehicle starting) off ebay suitable for Ferret / Champ and many others.

It was sold as spares or repairs and looks to have been shorted on the inter vehicle starting side. The contacts on the 30 amp circuit breaker look to have been melted together. I have reset the gap on 30 amp breaker by eye (very rough) and I can complete the circuit from one side of the breaker to the other when I press down on the contacts.

Would I be better off replacing the whole circuit breaker unit rather than having it go bang later? It has a fair amount of rust which might push me in that direction

  6. I wonder if this was done while in the Withams yard? Do Withams staff keep an eye on people inspecting the lots?

To limited degree yes thay keep a look out but pulling a master cylinder out would take at least half an hour to do but for what reason a new (nos) one can be bought for £60

  7. When I went to re-insure the Stolly and OT in 2008 I was told by a certain leading broker the insurance company they used would not touch the OT and trebled the policy price on the Stolly.

One phone call to another broker later both were insured for less than I paid in 2007 - and with the same insurance company!!!

That is completely and utterly bonkers

Insurance companies seem only to be interested in seeing who can produce the most annoying TV ad.

Who ever invented / thought of the mute button on the remote wants a pat on the back

  8. Do you know when it was sold off from the Army? Reason I ask, is that one came up in one of the first tender sales at Ludgershall ( when was that, mid to late 80's, I think), although the Ferret was actually laying in another location.

Last time I heard someone in Sheffield owned a MK2/2

  9.

However enjoy these photos of CFE Chieftains after disposal.

I can not see you're pictures at the moment.. disgraceful giving a description and no pictures:-D

  10. we've got a MK1 ferret, when we put her on a weighbridge she was 3660 kg with a quarter tank of fuel and bren on. And for all anoraks out there each inflated tyre on a rim is 75 kg. here ends useless information! regards lewis

Wouldn't fancy changing a run flat tyre on my own and the thought of getting the spare off and replacing it with the flat one..... I like my back

  11. just to confirm a 1965 ferret is currently mot exempt classed as a motor tractor, mot exempt fact, see long running thread on this for more info.

I stand corrected on that one but I wouldn't trust the DVLA to give a consistent answer. It helps to have it in black and white

vosa at the moment regard 1964 ferret as a motor tractor there fore mot exempt, have letter dated end of dec2009 that states as much, that aforementioned letter also mentions this consultation that is going on at the moment, hence me starting this thread. paul.:cool2:
  12. Hi, I've just purchased and am registering in my name a Ferret MK 1/2 VIN 3719 6 65.

DVLA have written to ask for confirmation - taken from the vehicle, not the V5 - of VIN and weight.

VIN I am sending aphot of the stamp, the plate has long gone.

For the weight it asks for proof based on any of:

    a) Plating

    b) A copy of the certificate of conformity or submac ?? (it says submac = Subsequent Minister Approval Certificate issued by manufacturer

    c) Manufacturers confirmation of maximum design weight in UK

    d) Design Weight Certificate

    e) For mobile carnes ... clearly not applicable)

The only weight indicators I have are general consensus ie looking for posts on HMVF. 'In Military Service' the book on the Rolls Royce B series which has a section on the Ferret, a couple of photocopied sheets which llok official giving the weights for each Ferret variant.

V5 has 3,200 Kg other spec has 3,600 or 3,550 Kg

Has anybody been through this process and what did DVLA accept - without necessarily going to a weighbridge.

Also, why are they asking me to go through this when I am the 5th owner ??

I will anyway phone DVLA and ask what they might accept and report back.

    Simon

Whats on the V5 at the moment do you still have part of the V5?

The vin or hull number suggests that you’re Ferret was built in 1965 (no V112G MOT exemption for you)

Unladen 3683 kg, Laden 4394 kg

Info taken from page 18 of the 1969 User Manual pic attached.

Go to the council weigh bridge pay £10 pounds or so for the certificate of them, the DVLA will except that as proof of weight.

Its odd that they are now asking for the weight and VIN / Hull number given that you are the fifth owner. The build date 1965 might be the reason that they are asking for this info

  13. Not sure, heres another piccy (another one). Original Stonefields had Hurth diffs (rare as hens teeth - as I shipped 2 to the UK), later stonefields had Salibury.

Would be interesting if they are the same as Ferret.

I would love some of these to be saved because as far as I none noe of these models exist in the UK and thats where they were made (well Scotland). The Goombas were upgrades here with Isuzu diesels

How much does it cost to send these kinds of vehicles to the UK?

They look to be Ferret tyres
