  1. Just on the finish line only the tin work and seat to go in . I am always amazed at how the motor vehicle industry was in the 1950 to the 1980 there was a lack of good design. Having said that there was some brilliant changes ;- Disc brakes ' independent suspension. engine and suspension subframes, power brakes and even flasher indicators, so thing have progressed. I started my motor apprenticeship in the early 1960 so have experienced lots of changes in the trade. I became a Lecture in motor vehicle and learned a great deal but as colleges did not allow us to keep up with advances in the trade my 5th year students were outstripping my Knowledge so I took early retirement and bought various military vehicles to have fun in bringing them back to life. Actually doing the hand brake was fidelity but OK the hard part is getting to it
  2. Just started the replacement of the shoes on the transmission brake on the FOX POLECAT To replace them :-take out seat ,undo transmission plates / covers , remove cotter pin and floor bracket on the forward reverse .. If a handbrake is present undo prop shaft nuts, remove 15/16 nut on the hub brake band. remove hub/ brake drum , this may be difficult and a puller may be required once out remove brake bands and replace. Sounds simple but 7hrs in a small space to remove is another matter and poor design + small clips/nuts for the mechanic causes longer time in a small space and for a 70 year old the old joints are stiff. I will need to let s With the poor design on removing the cotter it would not clear the front floor plate by 10mm so the front plate had to be disconnected to allow clearance. The brake hub would not clear the propshaft so the rear panel also needed to be removed to allow clearance for the hub to miss the propshaft just a litle thought would save a lot of time Looking at the brake failure I think the shoes have stuck on the drum and pulled the linings off. This vehicle has been stored for years in Museums and private collections and has only done 134 miles when I got it so it is almost new. but has had small issues to get it road legal and an epic sarga for registration A point when parking our vehicle over winter is to chock the wheels and leave the brakes off Well tomorrow I will build the hand brake up then complete the other side Sorry that the pictures have not come out in order
  3. Have fun I think the Green Goddess is needed to put out your fumes
  4. Dont we love the DVLA . Next time I have to register I first will buy a Green Goddess to put out my fumes
  5. Generally give way to the right was as the way I was taught in the middle sixties seems sensible otherwise chaos will occur There are different rules abroad
  6. Some people are so impatient .I had an encounter with such a person pulling out in front of me from a minor road . I was in a Ferret he was in an escort. You know the result the ferret made a nice ridge dent over his boot. He did not stop but sped off with me shaking my fist in the hatch .For someone that needed to get in front of an army vehicle there are consequence,s for there actions. Good job it was not a 60 tonne vehicle.
  7. Johann you must have got the monkey on the documents details
  8. Yes number plates need doc and a driver licence or other proof of ID
  9. Hi Lance Yes early on in the DVLA saga I spoke to the DVLA on the first rejection the same as you on age of the vehicle but it was not successful .I suppose if you talk to the monkey or the organ grinder is the key . I have today got the new historic number plate plates for the CVRW and dug out the papers for the champ plates which is being restored . With the champ they sent out a number plate Authorisation Certificate V948 .This is what has confused me and it was this document I was waiting for they must have changed there system. Regarding registration now it is so much harder to obtain needing loads of information , clubs to be involved, NOVA certificates and more than one attempt. Apart from several years ago when I bought the first ferret and Champ and I have had a few others since the DVLA have made it harder to register . The best club that helped me was the Champ owners club with Gerry Toms they took an interest in getting another Champ on the road and took on the DVLA after my first rejection. A BIG thanks to them and NOVA who were very efficient and helpful.
  10. Deeeer In the past they sent a separate document for number plates . V5C is the registration document and now the only one for number plates DVLA is rubbing off on me.
  11. Yes V5C is now needed from the DVLA for Number plates hopefully after sending them another letter I will get all the papers. They are not the most efficient people to deal with.
  12. I did not know that it was in the north east not far from where I came from. Its a fair distance to test at Ashley range in Hampshire
  13. My wifes family filled bombs with explosive they were always yellowish with the explosive
  14. The bomber crews had a tough job very brave men we owe them a lot it took sum guts to do it.
  15. Great to hear personal family histories. The tall boy bomb just fit the Lancaster bomb bay .I think I heard it was 21ft high and took two days to load with explosive but it broke the windows all around for several miles and lifted the Tirpitz out of the water and broke it back
  16. I would like all the documents back some I paid good money for and are for the vehicles history. You should comply With the size of number plates otherwise you get pulled by the police. They should have sent the form for legal number plates home painted ones apparently are not legal. I will chase them up again on Monday. Missed a lot of local shows with all the delays

  18. I have registered a few vehicle over the last 15 years but this one has been an annoying sarga 1ST ATTEMPT I contacted DVLA to see what DOCUMENTS they required. I sent ALL that they stated including vehicle history and a letter from the tank museum stating its age It was rejected on proof on AGE and they lost my bill of sale 2ND ATTEMPT I rang the DVLA stating that the tank Museum was the authority on the vehicle and had a letter stating the age of the vehicle. They also wanted a letter from me to state its age so it was sent with all the documents It was rejected again on AGE and they now want a NOVA and have changed the hull Number/chassis Number to the army registration Number 3RD ATTEMPT Got the NOVA certificate on the army registration number and sent more information on the age it was rejected again on AGE and required a club to verify its age 4 TH ATTEMPT I sent all documents to the MVT and it was some time before they acted an sent an inspector out. They sent some of the document back for me to send to get it registered. After emailing them they then sent them back to me so now I can send them to the DVLA Now a huge set of information including a letter from the MVT stating AGE. It was rejected again on a NOVA certificate, but it was in the pack . Looking at the rejection several time I noticed that the DVLA had again changed the VIN Number again to the original hull No that I submitted originally. 5 TH ATTEMPT Reapplied for a new NOVA certificate and again sent all the documents to the BLASTED DVLA . I am more than a little annoyed by now. I dislike BUREAUCRATS WOW THEY GAVE ME A REGISTRATION but have not sent a form for No plates or my documents back.
  19. I was visiting the old bomb sites for the earthquake bombs testing that destroyed the Tirpitz battle ship . It a beautiful area now but still has the crater that the TALLBOY earthquake bomb was tested. It also has the bomb direction arrow in concrete still there. Churchill and Eisenhower stood on it as they watched experimental bombs being exploded. The craters are large
  20. I have had a real set of problems with the DVLA for 6 mths with my CVRW so I have great sympathy with you. I found the hull No above the cooking vessel and sent it with the documents and the changed it to the army registration No Then further down the line of rejections they went back to the hull No. THEY ARE GETTING WORSE . I have now a registration document but it took 6 attempts and a green goddess fire engine to stand by to dampen down my fumes . Good luck just keep going and get a club to help and have the wife stand by with a bucket of water to dampen out the fires in you. Laurence

  22. I have a 1944 bren on the old british de - act and know it cannot be sold . IF we come out of the EU will we be able to use UK de- act again if sold in UK ???????
  23. I read somewhere that when we sent the Spitfire to Russia they put lumps of lead in there tanks to replace the Tetro ethyle -lead on 5 star fuel .I go and get Lead substitute from Halfords as well as using those Lead beads that are advertised on ebay on a wire dropped in the tank Modern petrol stings if you get it on skin and is not volatile as it use to be more like parafin
  24. I wont be taking a vehicle but a push bike to get around easier . I was there last year not many bargains as there are fewer dealers. I was at Overlord show and its getting to be a landrover show. Local events are easier to get to and they some times pay the fuel. Oh for the good old days.
