Right oh chaps, i've been trying to find a vehicle for a while but have no idea what it is. Basically, at the War and Peace show near our display (so it would have been close to if not exactly opposite the 'Rolling Thunder' display), a few military vehicles from Eastern Europe, including one that looked like a VW camper van, that wasn't. I presume it's probably Russian or Czech but have no luck in trying to find it on the internet, anyone know of any vehicles that I might be thinking of?
  2. Here's my photos from Victory, again big thanks to all, I think we did ourselves proud and really gave a boost to the public for the image of both Tommy Atkins and the poor bloody British infantry who made it possible for us to put on this display The award One part of our display showing the Universal Carrier Mk 2 and lend-lease half track, and the cottage Part two showing the bunker (based on an original photo which was displayed at the front on the crowdline) and HQ tent Part three showing the Universal Carrier Mk I, museum style display and accomodation tents Another photo showing the tents and museum style display, as well as the Jeep with the ATS display right at the end Chris Bell in the communications dug out And yes, the sign for Coalville was pointing in the right direction! Monty Blurry photo of Bob on the Welbike - video footage to come! And I quote from 'The Chaps guide on conduct when in the service of his Majesty the King'; "When being transported by military vehicle, one must make every opportunity to smoke ones pipe" Cheers to Rob for taking this photo, i'm the handsome chap stood in the half track behind Tim the bren gunner View from the inside of the cottage Private Kyte relaxing Good use was made of the rifle holder on the Universal Carrier Mk 1 One of the few events this year where the sign was appropriate! There's nothing cooler than a Universal Carrier with British infantry in it - and there's nothing more British than the Universal Carrier V8 engine, starts first time at the click of a button, and beats a modified Vauxhall Corsa anyday Forward Sigali! Here's my last few photos, of the other displays on site (and above the site!) May upload some more later, hope you enjoy them
  3. Yep, an RAF blue one - there were three MW's in total there, although was running out of space on my camera's memory card so only photo'ed the one
  4. Here's my pictures from a rather nice weekend, despite the rain Start off with a look at some of the classic civilian vehicles on display http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/589/reliantgk6.jpg[/img] Grandfather of the 'plastic pig', a 1930's Reliant van http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/4489/dennisaceuf6.jpg[/img] 1938 Dennis Ace fire engine (it was 'ace'! Badum tish!) http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/7702/fordsone83wrf7.jpg[/img] My favourite, the Fordson E83W Thames van, probably 1940s built but they first entered production in 1938, i've seen a lot of photos of these in use as YMCA tea vans in WW2, there's even a website dedicated to them http://www.e83w.co.uk http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/575/steamrollerhx4.jpg[/img] The great thing about the steamroller was that even when it drove past you, you still had time to get your camera out, turn it on, then walk at a normal speed and get a decent photo of it about ten metres from where you started! http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/1507/fordsonte2.jpg[/img] Oi loves moi tra'ers! Onto the military stuff http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5163/carrierij1.jpg[/img] One of two carriers with 'Tramps in Armour' (I still reckon they have the coolest name of any re-enactment group ever) http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/9104/humberambulanceyc4.jpg[/img] Very rare Humber ambulance which was also at Nene Valley http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/4601/matadorgq7.jpg[/img] AEC Matador http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/6386/fordsonwot2qs6.jpg[/img] Fordson WOT2 15 cwt truck http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/2443/lanc1cb4.jpg[/img] BBMF Lancaster put on an awesome display, enjoyed it even more as Upwood was an ex-Lancaster base (156 Squadron who Summer of 44 were portraying) http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/8571/lanc2jh3.jpg[/img] http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3979/lanc3ba5.jpg[/img] http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/7881/opskb6.jpg[/img] Gary and Ramsey off on 'ops' http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/4606/ramesg1.jpg[/img] Singing in the rain http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/9533/rainwt1.jpg[/img] Who doesn't love sleeping in pup tents?! Well, me, which is why I just put my kit in there and slept in one of the 160lb'ers! http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5262/display1br1.jpg[/img] Photo of our display with a rather nice 1943 Ford GPW, courtesy of Robert Langham http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3431/display2ye7.jpg[/img] Another pic http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8344/jeepic1ik6.jpg[/img] http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/media/images/Photographs/Image/B_005998.jpg[/img] Didn't have a mk III Sten unfortunately http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/1927/jeepic2os2.jpg[/img] Just waiting to scan in the WW2 photo of this, but the pose and angle etc are perfect, on the original pic the guy even has the tattoo on the right place! http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/6451/mejeeprz1.jpg[/img] Me? Pose? Never! http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/6564/jeeptq4.jpg[/img] Nice pic of the Jeep itself, soon to be in Leicestershire Regiment markings
  5. Cool, might go along to this as i'll be living in London then. Anyone know what public transport access is like?
  6. Shaping up to be a fantastic event with plenty of re-enactment groups, a huge battle and lots of military vehicles. The Leicestershire Regiment will have two Universal Carriers and possibly a Jeep and more, with a fantastic display. http://www.victoryshow.co.uk
  7. Does anyone know if 'mickey mouse' camouflage was ever used on British Jeeps (ie ones used by the infantry etc, so not specialised airborne ones)? Have seen it on a couple on the show circuit, with a completely black bonnet, although would have thought that with such a low profile on the Jeep they wouldn't have really bothered, haven't noticed any pictures in the 'British Wartime Jeep' book of any with it.
  8. Think my re-enactment group may be going, if they do not sure if I will though, moving to London the next day!
  9. Nice, certainly never seen the Morris before
  10. Here's some pictures of our display at Shuttleworth, the BSA kindly provided by the Shuttleworth collection (have to admit I was very, very tempted to get on it, kickstart it and chug about on it for a bit!) http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/7515/bsakb5.jpg[/img] One of the best BSA M20's i've ever seen, even smelt fantastic (probably the oil dripping off it though causing that) http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6016/displayot0.jpg[/img] Our display http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/8343/avrotriplanetk0.jpg[/img] This was my favourite aircraft there, the Avro Triplane. Another great thing about Shuttleworth was the atmosphere there in the hangars, and interesting photos on the wall too, especially of the results of the WWI bombing raids in the UK http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/9176/hatstb3.jpg[/img] Two questions about the hats - why are they so huge, and where can I get one?! http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4663/cavalcadewx1.jpg[/img] View of the cavalcade from the Jeep http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/7555/triumphfm1.jpg[/img] Triumph WWI RFC motorcycle, very nice http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4971/bristolihv5.jpg[/img] Bristol fighter - my first go at ground to air photography, think it worked fairly well (had to use full zoom as I was stood on our display taking these) http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4968/bristol2nl3.jpg[/img] http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/1751/jungmannuo4.jpg[/img] Very good display by the Jungmann http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5203/formationkh4.jpg[/img] http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/5442/boforsci4.jpg[/img] Me on the right (the firers side, judging by the pedal) http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/6012/bofors2sx7.jpg[/img]
  11. You're not wrong about too much of the re-enactors, especially the battle. It's a shame at W&P they seem to concentrate on the Americans and Germans (Germans especially, right next to the arena, all the groups put together with some very nice kit), especially as us British groups are pushed to the side among the vehicle owners! Ah well, found a picture of me firing the 75mm pack howitzer on another website so i'm happy! None of me with my goggles on riding my mates bike though
  12. Didn't know it was nicked, ouch.... the muzzle brake came from Kevin Wheatcroft of the Wheatcroft Collection who is restoring one to working order
  13. Gorgeous, are you planning to keep her in desert colours? Shame about Beltring, think I only spotted one or two BSA's and they were fairly hidden away, always thought it'd be good if, like the German and American (to an extent) re-enactment groups and vehicles, they put most of the British re-enactment groups and vehicles together, with about nine carriers at this years show and plenty of softskins, why not?
  14. Does anyone have a listing or know of one online of who won the various competitions, ie best Motorcycle etc? Mainly interested in who won the motorcycle one
  15. Oddly enough didn't see that, just saw the Jeep as I was cycling around, got my camera out and took a snap! Was the pound for charity or just for the owner?
  16. Here's the second part - artillery, armoured vehicles and vehicles with tracks One of about seven carriers - a Universal Carrier (Mk II I think) from East of England tank museum Carrier in the markings of 49th Division, South Wales Borderers (two carriers there with SWB markings on) Me with the carrier - cheers to Frenchie for taking the photo Standard Sherman with a 75mm gun The coolest tank ever (and of course, it's British) - the Comet! The Comet crew - 'Tramps in Armour' as they call themselves This was ace, the M3 Grant tank - couldn't believe it when I saw it actually driving This was probably my favourite vehicle, a Humber mk IV armoured car, armed with a 37mm (2 pounder) gun and a co-axial 7.62 BESA machine gun. 49th Recce used these as well Windsor carrier, basically a Universal carrier with a longer body Staghound armoured car, built by the yanks for the British Stuart tank with the turret off used for recconaissance Panzer IV Panzer V 'Panther' tank Kettenkrad [imghttp://img61.imageshack.us/img61/3208/6pdrcb0.jpg[/img] 6 pounder anti tank gun - the Leicesters would have had some of these (can't remember how many) 17 pounder anti tank gun, the best British anti tank gun of the war, and could knock out a Tiger tank at 1000 yards. It was also the main armament for the Comet and Sherman Firefly tanks Me with the V2 V2 rocket at night
  17. Here is part one of two of my Beltring photos. As for the request, did anyone spot a Jeep marked up with a white polar bear on a black background and a green square with a white 62 on it? That should be the markings for a vehicle of the Leicestershire Regiment, 49th Division, a mate of mine saw it twice but I couldn't find it anywhere! http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/1223/pinkjeepyf9.jpg[/img] ARGH MY EYES THEY BURN http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/8676/jeep1tr4.jpg[/img] 49th Division HQ Jeep http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/435/jeep3yv0.jpg[/img] 'Desert Rat' Jeep http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5536/jeep2bu4.jpg[/img] http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/6746/jeep5lo1.jpg[/img] http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3298/jeep4qk4.jpg[/img] http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/1238/hallamjeepuu4.jpg[/img] This was my favourite Jeep, in the markings of the Hallams (oddly enough the pink jeep wasn't my favourite) http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/5668/dbjlq0.jpg[/img] Daimler Dingo (which you can just see), Bedford QL and another, yep you guessed it, Jeep in british markings http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/8747/oypy1.jpg[/img] Bedford OY three tonner http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/8139/qlqu2.jpg[/img] Bedford QL 4x4 three tonner http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4406/humberdg0.jpg[/img] Humber 8cwt truck (think it's 4x4, not sure) http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4684/austinos0.jpg[/img] Small Austin staff car http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/8979/austintillygk4.jpg[/img] Austin 5cwt light utility (known as a Tilly) http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/1408/utilityqx0.jpg[/img] Humber utility (used by officers) http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/4402/woa2bw8.jpg[/img] Fordson WOA2 utility http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/7544/wot2hb5.jpg[/img] Fordson WOT2 15 cwt truck http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1206/wot8vy5.jpg[/img] Fordson WOT8 4x4 three tonner http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/401/snipeqd9.jpg[/img] Humber Snipe staff car http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/3876/mazjq5.jpg[/img] Russian MAZ 8x8 tractor unit, used for towing intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles (the wheels come up to my shoulders) http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/6558/morrisui3.jpg[/img] Morris CS8 15 cwt truck http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/7588/morris4x4ve1.jpg[/img] Morris C8 4x4 15 cwt truck http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/8333/o1avz1.jpg[/img] Ford O1A staff car http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/1715/cmpfp7.jpg[/img] Last but not least, a CMP (Canadian Military Pattern) 3 tonner
  18. Here's a pic I took of it, took over eighty photos and this was one of two photos of post-war vehicles I photographed! (the other was the huge 8x8 MAZ russian tractor unit) http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3961/humberpigva7.jpg[/img] Have a larger scale photo too if you want it
  19. Was having a last wander around early Sunday afternoon (shame the majority of vehicles had already left by then), was this the Pig with the screens and white paint over it? Looked very good
  20. Very good I thought - how much of it was actually true? From google i've found a site that mentions they only got halfway across the channel, ran out of fuel and were towed home by a naval patrol (then again it also calls him Lance Sergeant King!), but another said the real story was more dramatic as to what happened.
  21. Haha ace, will it be there all week? If I see it (and providing I have any left, after all in the re-enacting world beer is a currency!) i'll leave a bottle of something for Jack
  22. Went over to the new exhibition on the Leicestershire Regiment today at the Newarke Houses museum in Leicester, excellent I thought and well worth a visit, although I really want to buy WWI and Boer War kit now and i've only just about finished my WW2 gear! http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/2335/badgeny0.jpg[/img] http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9455/displaysh8.jpg[/img] Part of the pre-WWI display http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/871/enfieldts4.jpg[/img] Lee Enfield No 1, wonder how much these go for nowadays? http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/2753/europe1sw2.jpg[/img] http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/5751/europe2pk1.jpg[/img] http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/2117/posterwe4.jpg[/img] Poster in the pub in the downstairs 1940's street - there's also a small pack and a cross strap in there, and some photos presumably of the Leicesters, couldn't make out much apart from one of a Bedford MW http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/3086/trench1po8.jpg[/img] http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/6475/trench2yf0.jpg[/img] Trench display http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/403/vehicleswm4.jpg[/img] Photo of a parade in Leicester at the end of the war - took me a while to find out what the big 8x8 beast it, turns out it's a T18 Boarhound armoured car, 2500 were ordered from the USA for the UK but only 30 delivered, and was never used in combat. There's only one left, and that's at Bovington http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5564/snuffboxip2.jpg[/img] A real tigers head used as a snuffbox http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/8049/skinyv6.jpg[/img] Tigers skin http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/4314/stonerl2.jpg[/img] Memorial stone at Tigers Wood, in between Bagworth and Desford http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/9605/plaquemf1.jpg[/img] Plaque on the stone http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8006/viewkd2.jpg[/img] View from the memorial - would have been a beautiful view if the weather was nice, but unfortunately raining a lot
  23. Haha, cool! If I see a cheap period bicycle I might buy it then try and flog it off at the end of the show, so if you see someone in full battledress on an old bike it'll be me!

    "peep"?

Have a few photocopied pages for the Royal Engineers pamphlet about Assault Crossing Equipment (looking forward to getting my hands on a proper repro copy at W&P), and for the storm boats, which carried a Jeep or 6 pounder, it has a section entitled 'Loading and unloading peeps' My question is, what is a peep? Is this what Jeeps were called in official army booklets? It's not just a spelling mistake as it mentions it more than once, and always with the first letter in lower case, for example "...it will carry a 6 or 2-pdr anti-tank gun and crew excluding ammunition, or a peep." So, does this mean a Jeep, which I presume it does, and if so, why is it called a peep?
  25. Wow, are you hoping to restore it to original status? As far as I know (i'm probably wrong though), that would make it unique, the earliest 'bren' carrier I know of is the single Mk I Universal Carrier i've seen
