I brought my Gaz 69 through france no problem I brought a zil 131 and a load of other spares through France. I had no problems, I had no paper work to allow them transit.
My ural 375d's came through france on a low loader..no problems
my star 660's came through france no problems,
I have heard that they can get touchy about some things but i guess armour is their biggest issue..

and dont ever leave home without the engine governor oil topped up...or disaster may occur...

I already have a few toys...volunteer helpers are welcome. I am slowly heading into getting a small museum together but thats a long way off yet...

I wouldn't know - I didn't go to EaTON you know :D
Forgotton how to sex the Turner ones now too :readbook:
If the boxes are out, stick 'em in gear and turn the shaft!
what a damn obvious thing to do...doh...it just didnt occur to me and i used to design gearboxes...dumb ass I am.

At the rate Paul is going I'll never catch up! I'm getting the CMP tomorrow so I'm really excited at the moment.
I am nearly done...eastblock, nearly done, just one or two more to collect...
a star 266,
kraz
a scammel drops
a zil 135,
a spartan,
saladin,
a scorpion and maybe a chieftain,
then I am done, unless I get an mtlb at the right price and a gaz 66...

Is the new MOT issue about money or safety...40,000 vehicles go untested, so VOSA and the DVLA say, if this is the same 40% of motorbikes that are un taxed then we can maybe take the figure with a pinch of salt.
Is there a history of military vehicles having accidents caused by poor maintenance.
Is this change driven by Europe, if so why are there still so many awful vehicles on the roads of Europe...perhaps they dont enforce the existing laws like we do in the UK.
Are we just being hassled by little hitlers.....who have little or no regard for our freedom.
The car and lorry have made the 20th century one of the most exciting centuries ever...H&S is slowly making the 21st century nothing but a boring hell hole...

hmm how can i tell which is which i have five eaton gearboxes...any external clues?
-
no its the ubiquitous Cummins 6BTA diesel engine...lovely engine if a bit gutless...but better than the zil petrol engine which is truly gutless below 2000 rpm...
i always though the six speed boxes were the overdrive design but I may be wrong as first on this is low but not a crawler gear and second is too high to start off in...
-
sounds good, my carb is still suffering from crap in the fuel lines, have cleaned most of it out now but am fitting a new tank next weekend and this should give me nice clean fuel...the engines run very sweet for a 10 litre petrol engine...what fuel consumption do you get on a run...what weight are you empty...i am about 20 tons with the M62.

Could not resist it, I am converting three of them so wanted to get an overall idea of other peoples methods for conversion, this is a good one but I think I can improve it and also improve on my installations with the knowledge I have of the install...what I am unaware of though is how the the truck will run so easily up to 60 and 70 mph, with the normal transfer box and only 2700 rpm when the zil engine will run up to 3700 to achieve similar speeds....
Either the eaton 5 speed gearbox is not geared 1:1 or it has had its transfer box changed...if they just fitted a slightly smaller main drive cog in the gearbox it would work a treat...but as i say i will have to do a bit more investigation......(well my boys will)
It is fitted with a crane but I think this will need new seals...

I think they all do that.... 1st in a saracen is extremely low, and only for really heavy going, off road, 2nd or 3rd for the traffic light grand prix, that'll suprise a few motorists!...probably you too!.....
I need to replace/reseal my flywheel.... it's leaking, badly, in a very leaky way!:-(:-( big job, I fear!
Its in second that it isnt driving off, very slow, if you rev it is does nothing but if you just ease the throttle it drives off, it must be the band slipping but I guess I need to do the pumping in each gear thingy...
that gearlever thingy is very odd...sometimes stiff sometimes easy...very very odd...
-
no I am not as wise as you think...mine was built in 1956, well went into service then...2 july 1956, so tomorrow is its birthday...mine is 84 BA 25...have you tried the army museum in Farnborough...and or Bovingdon for the history card...
-
okay I need a bit of help...if you put her in first she is real slow to move off...she doesn't really want to unless you are on really low revs and build up slowly, if you rev it nothing...does this mean I need to pump the pedal in each gear a bit more to tighten up the bands.....second and up seem very smooth as mine is up armoured should i use 1st to pull off..
-
Good News,
It looks like the correct number for my saracen is 84 BA 25 as last described, Martin and Bovingdon has found its histroy card, i have paid my 15 quid and the information will be with me tomorrow...happy now...
I would think that 915 would be a reasonable chassis number...there were quiet a few of them made i understand...
-
is that the same engine as the one in my M62 Continental R6602, 9865 cc 0r 602 cu inches...big old buggers aren't they, lovely though.......why did you have it rebuilt...
-
have to check again as my numbers are not at all clear, am thinking it should be 84 BA 75...not 25 will check tomorrow...
-
oh yes one other thing, mine doesn't seem to have brake lights, is this right or are they present and not working..only has a single filament bulb in the back...
-
have had plenty of hot days, very hot, but non of those problems,..... had starvation once due to going off road and not switching to reservre, when only had a little amount of fuel in main tank......put it down to inexperience:blush:, but that was 2.5 to 3.0 years ago....
okay where is the main and reserve switch...not seen that one yet...
-
must use glasses and use daylight to check vin plates...the number is 84BA25...which seems to make it out as a mk2 but I cannot confirm this, it was upgraded in 1974...is that about right..I have told Bovingdon and hope to have it sorted now.
-
well i have confirmation that the cards for my model have been lost...it is 24 BA 25 which makes it a Mk1 upgraded to a mk5 D...but when it was originally manufactured I CANNOT CONFIRM AS NO ONE HAS THE CARDS.
I know it was before 1959 as the thing in the manual i have it says that up to 30 BA 71 had different gearing than later ones and the books was published 1959...so it must be in the mid 50's...

I have a few dishes on Russian satellites yes...they are a really nice bunch of people but very odd to do business with...the satellite dishes pay for my toys...
-
can anyone point me to where I might find the number...
-
no they dont have the information, will try the army..
-
The boys have sorted the engine mostly, i have a new petrol tank, cost a fortune, and have collected most of the important recovery gear...the steering pump is leaking from somewhere, will take a look at this and their are still bits of bodywork to be sorted...minor but important. She has new windscreen new drivers glass, new CES and a load of other bits and pieces..speedo not yet fitted, I will do that this weekend along with a few more tidying bits and pieces...will start spraying up parts as I go too...
I am still looking for a rear and front vice for the thing and the canopy that goes over the crane cab, the canvas canopy, i have the hoops but no canvas...
the front pto shaft will be with me in a week or so and that will be fired up and tested, the rear winch is a monster and hauled her out of a bog with ease...she should be all sorted legally, with new number plates and tax disc in a couple of weeks and I will be out on the road taking a couple of buses to the scrap yard..

Hmm this old wives tail...there are a number of issues that affect the fixed drive lines on the vehicles you mention...however of all the vehicles the stalwart was perhaps the worst affected due to a number of reasons.
first if you pick up a vehicle and run it you will see one hub either not turning or not turning as it should, a manual check is difficult as they are tough to turn...but in gear you will quickly see..once one goes there is not doubting it has gone...
There are two basic weak points, the tracta joint, on an unloaded stolly these are usually extended down so that the tracta unit is working on the ends of its lugs...this makes them wear quicker than usual and can with a bit of wind up lead to failure...I know this one... on the stolly I have lowered my torsion bars so that when unloaded it is basically level and the tracta units are fully engaged.
as to wind up, well you have three wheels on each side locked to each other...no diffs, no slip just straight bars and gears connecting them together...experience has proven that if you keep the wheels within a certain pressure, and a certain size you can run them on the road forever without much problems. The stolly has the biggest tyres the most grip and the biggest variation in weight...it suffers because of this, poor maintenance easily shows up and can lead to a tracta or a bevel box failure....
HOWEVER..experience again says that actually this is not your biggest worry with a stolly bevel box...shock loads are your biggest issue, if you for instance decide to go off roading and bouncing the old girl up and down, this will cause shock loads on the transmission, if you haul out a tree stump, this will cause shock loads, if you tow a very very heavy vehicle, shock loads...all of these things can and have led to bevel box and tracta unit failures...wind up is usually blamed but is not always, if ever, the culprit...
try graphite in your bevel boxes, thee are some really good oils for modern heavily loaded gear trains...PM me and I will give you details but they are bought through cougar oils, very good in your bevel boxes and guaranteed for the life of a stolly, well one that only does a few thousand miles a a year...
so stop worrying do your normal maintenance and carry out the checks as needed, i have never measured the circumference of my tyres...but tyre pressures work...makes her nicer to drive too
I have two stollys and one saracen...I say go enjoy...
