  1. So did I........ I was looking forward to meeting CW. Saw Brenard's Scammell there, but didn't see him either. I was rather hoping HMVF members would have made themselves more visible, so I didn't look like some sort of nurd grilling everyone as to whether they were forum members or not. I suspect there was another with the gantry Austin. I did get some strange looks when I was lurking around it as if I seemed familiar, but didn't have the courage to ask who was who. :red: The day wasn't totally wasted in that respect, as I did ask Grasshopper some questions before I found out who he was. Considering my lack of knowledge of his vehicle, he replied very politely and told me exactly what I wanted to know. A good ambassador to the forum.
  2. How about a picture of it alongside the 4000.............just for us agricultural types. :cool2:
  3. Depends on the size of them.......... we have some ERF's with Cummins 6.0 litre 'B' series engines that rev to about 2900. My old favourite on the fleet has a Perkins Eagle TX that only just about makes 2000. That one is around 12 litres.
  4. What does that do then............ :n00b:
  5. I'll have to have a look at ours just out of curiosity, cos I always thought they were "Lower ratio" than that. Jus' goes to show though....... even a smart ar*e like me doesn't know everything. :cool2:
  6. Oh an' P.S. What's the Series 1 got under the bonnet......... 8 cylinder Gardner, V6 Detroit, Tecumseh V twin with electric start.......:rofl: I'll be able to recognise you easily now.......... you'll be the one with the 12 bore waitin to pepper me ass with buckshot for bein' cheeky.
  7. I'll keep my eye open for you. (Don't get me wrong though...... I'm not a cyclops.) I should be there as long as it doesn't snow or sumfink. Ya never know with this globule warming do ya
  8. Hello and welcome to the forum. If I lived on the Isle of Wight, I would buy a DUKW. It would save a bloo*y fortune in ferry fees. Trouble is though, I probably wouldn't be too good with the old navimugashun stuff, an' probably end up in Jersey. Oh bu**er :-D :-D
  9. Sheer power, in a nutshell............ Most of the bigger artics have direct drive top gears, rev to about 2000 rpm, have an axle ratio around 6:1, give or take a little bit. Overdrive gearboxes to my knowledge, were more common on trucks of the fifties and sixties, mainly due to the increased speed limits introduced during that era, and it was another way of getting a higher top speed. Over the years, trucks have benefitted from higher power to weight ratios and engines that produce a lot more torque, mainly from turbo charging. I used to drive an artic in the seventies that had a gross weight of 24 tons, with a 150 hp engine. (Around 6.25 bhp per ton) I then had another 24 tonner with a 180 engine in it. (7.5 bhp per ton) I drove a 32 tonner with a 240 engine in the eighties. (7.5 bhp/ton). More recently a Daf with a 330 engine running at 41 tons. (8.05 bhp per ton) I now drive a Daf 85 430 running at 44 tonnes (9.77 bhp per ton). Are you beginning to see a pattern here? There is an ever increasing demand for power in the truck industry, mostly because of the strangling time restrictions all the drivers hours legislation is creating. We've had to go for higher power trucks to get through the days work. The 430 shaved half an hour off of a journey, just because of the extra power and speed. This is why you will see Scanias, Dafs and Volvos with badges on the side or front with 460, 530, and some with 600. 600 hp at 44 tonnes equates to 13.6 bhp per tonne. Better still, drop the trailer and you have a 600hp Volvo artic unit running at about seven and a half tonnes or 80 bhp per tonne. Try outrunning a solo artic unit at the traffic lights. Most cars will take a few hundred yards before they start to pull away from the truck. It aint all fun though......... trucks are allowed to do 60 mph on motorways........ so why the fu........ are speed limiters set to 56 mph :??? 90% of the foreign trucks romp past UK trucks ..... for some strange reason. :???
  10. Hello Richard and welcome to the forum. I'm from a farming and haulage background and knew nothing about military vehicles when I joined the forum. To me; if it had tracks it was a tank :n00b: I've learned a lot since I've been on here. My main interest is the heavy transport vehicles, but I would love to see some photos of your models, as would many more of us on here. While we can restore 1:1 vehicles, most of us envy the abilities of the ever increasing number of modellers that are joining the forum. All of them have outstanding abilities and a great eye for detail. Photo's...........hmmmm................please.
  11. Hi Dudes There was I this afternoon sweating me clangers off in our yard; when I heard this strange sound. At first it sounded like a tractor travelling at high speed with the tyres roaring on the road......... but something didn't sound right. I peered through the trees and saw what I think was an FV432 clattering past. So if you were travelling South on the A26 at about 5pm passing the United Petroleum Garage, travelling from Uckfield to Lewes............. you'd best own up........We don't see many of them go by. I thought someone was very brave, heading into Lewes at that time of day.
  12. The forklift itself is made by the same company who made the engine. CCE is probably Coventry Climax Engines Ltd, who were I believe taken over by British leyland in 1955. Dinky Toys had a model almost identical to yours, although the Dinky one looks as though it could be a larger capacity version. As to the value.......... who knows...... but they must be pretty rare now, bearing in mind that they are heavy lumps, and scrap does tend to reach silly prices now and then. I would be happy to pay about eight hundred notes for one in running order, but they could be worth a lot more depending on the condition. I hope this is of some help to you...Will.
  13. The situation you had happens quite often. I pulled on to an empty roundabout at Lakeside and had some ar*ehole drive straight at me blowing their horn. I didn't get out of their way any quicker though, fully laden 44tonne tankers don't accelerate that quickly. Just as well though; it gave me sufficient time for them to read my lips......... I wasn't too polite either.
  14. There's a few goodies there that I would love to own. The Coles crane, a Muir Hill A5000, and the other large loading shovel. Is that a Michigan or what? And finally.........the Daf hook loader.........I just love the look of them. A real Tonka truck and all of them would look great alongside my Albion. :cool2:
  15. He probably had it in the back of his mind what he was looking for.... now the poor bu**er is probably totally confused, and worse off than when he started. As they say............ there are some questions that it's best not to ask. Best add this one to the list. :-D
  16. Oooooh myyyyyyyy God..........that's really scary. To some it's a clever bit of improvisation.........to others it's a permanent repair. The ones I feel most sorry for though is the ones who think they've done a great job fixing it. :shake::shake::shake:
  17. Firstly, welcome to the forum. Secondly......... what a fascinating story to start with. We hope you will show us some pictures of what it should look like, and hope you will keep us up to date with progress. You were lucky to find a chassis number and so much detail about its past. Good luck with your restoration, and make sure you post plenty of pictures ................................... if you want some peace and quiet. :-D
  18. Well I think this topic is a waste of time............... you will get as many opinions as to what you should buy, as there are types of vehicle available. As far as I'm concerned...... forget all the other stuff and really pee off a few members on here and buy a Militant Mk 1 tipper... (Cos loads of them want one and can't find one) .........ooooooor buy an ALBION, and there aren't too many of them about. HD 23's are as rare as rocking horse poo, and CX's can't be mistaken for anything else. Luvverly looking bit of kit. That's what I think any way..............:-D
  19. I bet that raised a few cheers from the crowd. The loudest aircraft I've ever seen was the Saab Scania Viggen at Farnborough in about 78-80. It took off on full afterburners and nearly shook everything to pieces/ Made the hair on my neck stand on end though............ ' kin great stuff. :-D
  20. The "Soldiers" behind the tank look ready for action. New combat tactics, first they distract you and then shoot you while you stand there with your mouth open. Wouldn't mind being captured and interrogated by them though, they would probably drug you with an overdose of pheremones........... er.... assuming they aren't "weapon" wielding transsexuals. "kin 'ell.... that would be scary  As for the "person" astride the gun barrel......... "he" looks like he's straddled a few weapons in his time...........looks like a "breech loader" to me. :shake: :-D
  21. I think that falls into the aeronautical porn category. A fantastic sight that can only be really appreciated by seeing it live. I saw one take off at Biggin. I think it was the last year they flew it before it was grounded. It took off near vertical and we saw what looked like sheets of cardboard blowing up behind it as it took off. We later learned that it had literally blown sections of the tarmac off the runway. Now that's what you call raw power. Just a little off the subject......... does anyone know if there are any Buccaneers still flying. They too were a great looking and very destictive aircraft. I haven't seen one for years.
  22. Try using undiluted traffic film remover. If you have a "Killaspray" type weed killer sprayer, just spray it on and leave it for about ten minutes and everything will come off. Better still, wash off what you can with a pressure washer first and then spray it. If you have carbon stains or dried on oil residue; spray it and scrub it with a stiff parts cleaning brush. People like Autosmart or Comma (TFR) do a very powerful cleaner, and the advantage of it is that you can dilute it and wash all your vehicles with it. That way you wont waste good money on a single purpose cleaner. A word of warning though; make sure you do dilute it if you use it for washing your cars paintwork as it will stain it on a hot day. Jus' tryin ta be helpful.
  23. Oh well......... looks like it was the driver that head butted the screen after all............ not the passenger as I thought,
  24. Occasionally in my odd moments of boredom, I look up famous people on Wikipedia just out of curiosity, and to find out whether they are still alive. I was reading about harry Secombe's Army career and how he met Spike Milligan. If you look up the link and read the Army career section; there's a really funny story involving a large piece of artillery and comments made after the event. I'm sure those of you who were gunners will find it very amusing. I certainly did. :-D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Secombe
  25. The next vehicle on my must have list.......... when my wife wins the lottery. Lovely looking truck.
