Job lot of 10 qty. 8 were painted (NATE green , possibly odd one with earlier coat of DBG , 2 were probably unissued as virgin helves (these I left in the buff after a light sand to clean up but leave the Cat. No.s.) The remainder - I stripped off the paint and Rustin's 'Danish' oiled them.

Your gardening tools - if left on the tailgate - you need a min. of a few nylon tie-wraps discreeted. Some even through-bolt them by drilling holes through their tail-gate. Although a local to me had his tools always on his Rover 1 tailgate with only normal web straps & wing-nut, when observed almost every week in supermarket car park - I always noted this and amazed he was still in possession.

I wasn't intending to leave them on the vehicle unattended but thanks for this, will have a think if at shows etc.

  2. I have no doubt that handles were painted in various colours in-service.

However it was pointed out to me by a veteran that in their unit (Para Sqn RAC) such a practice was strictly forbidden, not only was it a waste of time but using it would rapidly cause blisters. So they were always kept 'au naturelle'.

I can understand that paint would hide defects as well

  3. I must be getting close to finishing to ask this question, what colour, if any, was the pick axe painted which goes on the back of the Land Rover, mine is 1986.

Also the handle appears to be in several colours was there a standard?

    Thanks in anticipation

  4. The older LRs would have been factory painted in gloss DBG and the IRR applied on top later. A gloss undercoat would give the protection you need. Alternatively wipe the Matt paint down with Duck oil now and again, it freshens it up and protects!

    Iain

The land rover has come back from repairs in a gloss so alright there when I bought it it was matt and i think that looks better

  5. You might consider longevity of the paint and its substrate as well. I was advised that the full matt finish paints are pretty porous and have poor wearing qualities (which was solved in the Army by slapping on another coat, as owners of ex-mil L/Rs will fondly attest!). You can get better protective qualities by going for an eggshell paint, which looks a bit too shiny when newly applied but weathers nicely. Depends also on whether you want a factory fresh or in-service look.......which may lead you to apply paint with either a spray gun, a sponge pad or a 6" brush! Then keep scrupulously clean........or never wash and throw some more mud at it every weekend. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Thanks, hadn't heard that abut the matt being porous

  6. "IFFR paint"? Richard I'm not sure if that is a typo for IRR & your location has got slightly transposed into it?

Or possibly you meant paint that has IFF (Indicator Friend or Foe) peoperties. Markings to protect against fraticide were applied using infra-red absorbent paint.

Good quality NATO Green should be idinstiguishable from IRR NATO Green other than by observing it under IR illumination & observing with night vision equipment.

But of course NATO Green as a colour can vary with manufacturer & with age & the degree of exposure to sunlight. Bear in mind that British NATO Green BSC 381C No. 285 is not quite the same as that used by other NATO partners all it means is that in conforms broadly to the STANAG 2338 NATO Infra-Red Reflective (IRR) Green Colour for Painting Military Equipment.

Clive sorry IRR paint, the cost difference is considerable and want summit to look good and to the eye is correct

  7. I have some gen. NRC9707 straps but can't put my hand on them just now - they are a stiff but slightly flexy plastic , much stiffer than rubber belting - they are thicker than 5mm , I would guestimate 8mm . I think the stuff I got from ARCO was solid neoprene sheet to the stiffest Shore scale (not quite as stiff as the gen. item). If yours are just 5mm rubber then that would confirm to me they are not a Solihull designed item , apart from that the location is wrong the ISTR the Const. & Use Regs state the spacing of rear reflectors .

Thanks, Do you have a reference I can find for the ISTR the Const. & Use Regs. please and 8mm does sound better than the 5mm I assumed

  8. I have been looking at respraying my 110 Land Rover, I suspect it was painted when I bought it the finish was IFFR paint, apart from the purists would anyone be able to tell the difference between this and NATO Matt paint?

    Richard

  9. Illustrated spare parts list.

Many thanks, I have some but not the one you supplied the link for, however that is now in my collection

Its the usual each service can have different names or terms unique for them, I remember taking a Land Rover into Aldershot and told to go to LED, not a clue till said was Navy and they were polite and explianed

  10. I am friends with the Arena crew and it's true that the quad bike guy tried to make a serious fuss, so we ended up making a new track with a 432 that mostly avoided the bike path. Once the new track was visible enough (after 20 laps at full speed in the 432 :-D ) the other vehicles just followed it.

Another thing is that on the far side of the Arena (towards America's Field) there is an underground gas pipeline. It has always been there and never was an issue with the old W&P, but suddenly now it is so the gas company made sure that strip was cordoned off and no vehicles were allowed on it. So much so, an official had to be in that area to make sure it was kept clear and there was a guy from the gas company to keep an eye on things. Apparently at least one vehicle ended up in that area and the guy immediately started snapping photo's... This is just a narrow strip near the far edge of the Arena so it's not that much of a problem.

Re the gas pipe, T in the park a Kinross had a gas or oil pipe crossing the site, which up until 2 years a go was no problem, Health and safety decided not safe so T in the Park has moved to Strathallan, in my opinion more difficult to get to for festival goers

  11. I am not convinced yours is mounted correct or in fact a OEM strap.

I need to double-check - I think the strap used is identical to that used on late Lightweights (so late IIRC not listed in Parts Books )

Normally mounted to the lower (inner) bumperette bolt , as on my 57KG59 (1987) 90" , possibly yours is a later strap ?? not kept up with Wolf.

btw , they harden - they snap off , as affected by UV although a tough plastic . It may be best to obtain a gen. sample and find a more suitable rubber. I once got a large sample a gasket material , same thickness , looks the same from ARCO remains flexible - lasts for ever - make your own facsimile ,,

    Ruxy

many thanks, the trouble with a facsimile the garage lost the bits so I have no sizes to go on, the land rover was direct from Witham so these were attached on receipt.

Was not aware of the web site so many thanks

    Richard

  12. I am looking to finish the repairs to the 110 Land Rover and am have trouble the rubber strips which hang down and hold the reflectors.

Does any one know the part number or even better a source for finding them.

    Thanks in advance.

  13. The pattern of Cooker with the pull out tank feature in the 1945 Manual but probably were not introduced much before this.

The earlier pattern is externally identical but has a detachable Tank which used to leak hence the change to the pull out pattern.

The earlier Cookers tend to have an oval metal makers plate on the top cover.

That sound a good manual to get site of, i have a few of the others

  14.

i have no idea and i think nobody yet, but realistically you would expect a ban on sales of new cars. Second hands ones will fade away in the next 20 years problems solved. Leaves the problem where to get fuel in 2050 or 60
Thinking out loud this could be like the removing 2 and 4 star petrol and trying to find replacement
