Yesterday finally saw the tyres meeting the wheels! I wanted to make sure the paint hardened off totally before I fitted the tyres. I am really pleased with the end result. They now look the part and cannot wait to fit the wheels to the rest of the bike. I just need to figure out the exactly how the wheel spindles/spaces/washer all fit together......

๐ Sorry gents

Hi Steve Yes taps and dias are definitely at the top of my list. The more efficient I become at working on these old British bikes the larger my tool collection becomes. Thereโs no better feeling when you have the right tool for the job!
-
Thank you gents! Much appreciated.......it sounds silly but in the years I have been building bikes I have never used taps or Dias ๐ฌ so my collection of suitable tools is non existent. Would either of you happen to have a 1/4โ with a 26tpi BSC thread also? If itโs easier I am also happy to post the rod out for the threads to be cut? Thanks ever so much!
-
Thank you ever so much! I donโt have any Dias at the moment so I may take you up on your kind offer, thank you! The top coat now applied to the wheels, they are really starting to look the part!

Hi Tom! Thank you for your comments, much appreciated! I have been collecting NOS parts for this restoration for many years it always surprises me where they turn up sometimes. Yes, I found some suitable rims which look great, in fact I have an original rim and tyres but decided to keep them for display. Would be great to see some photos of your project๐

Thank you Steve! Most appreciated! I will post pictures of the end results! I am now turning my attention to the two last minor fabrication jobs, making the front and rear brake rods. I will need to buy some Dias to create the correct threads but struggling to find the thread sizes..... would anyone happen to have this information to hand and where I might be able to buy the tools for the job? All the best ๐

Perfect! Thank you for sharing Ron ๐

Edging ever closer to the finish line now the newly built wheels are prepped and etched primed. Both front and rear hub/ brake plates are now prepped and primed. It was lovely to reveal the OD paint on each of the parts. this leads me on to a few questions:- 1. Can anyone tell me which valve caps should be fitted? 2. What thread sizes are the front and back wheel nuts? I need to replace them. 2. What โfinishโ should the wooden gear knob be and how best can I replicate it. I was thinking black acrylic paint? Thanks in advance. Steve

Nice Hat! Ron I like the rear carrier on your Welbike, makes the bike much more practical ๐ Lex, il drop you an email later with my Welbike numbers ๐ Freshly rebuild James wheels have now arrived......more updates to come.....
-
Yes it would be nice you know just how many Welbikes exist........those photos are great Ron! Do you know much history of your Welbike?
-
Well spotted Ron! Yes I have owned the Welbike for a number of years now. As I understand, like many, it ended up going to America after the War, where it stayed for a number of years. I believe it came back into the UK approx. 10 years or so ago. It appears fairly original, a few battle scares but all part of the charm. I wonder how many Welbikes have survived?
-
Ironically if I painted the bike as it should be it would of taken me half the time to restore it as I wouldnโt of spent so much time cleaning and polishing the brass! ๐ฌ. My excuse is I was trying to save paint but in reality itโs because I love to see the raw material. Restoration always seam ongoing and ever evolving. I have saved some paint to paint the bling when I get bored ๐ P.S Fantastic Welbike Ron!

Itโs been a little hectic with work last week but I managed to get a few hours on the James over the weekend! ๐ The wiring is now competed and most of the control cables laid.....the tank is now also fitted along with the seat frame. Its really starting to look like a bike.......
-
Some more parts arrived today! I must say the sprocket is fantastic quality! I am really pleased with the tyres two!
-
Thanks Ron! I just wanted to make sure I was not missing anything ๐

Your correct Lex ๐ So progress is edging forward with the ignition lead now fitted. The NOS front brake cable is now also fitted and I have now made the throttle cable. Would anyone happen to have a photo of how the decompression cable sits and fixes to the decompression body, please?
-
Thanks Chaps.....il use one of them momentary until I source the correct one........just when you think you are nearly finished ๐
-
So the tyres and tubes are now on order. I am looking to pop the ignition lead on......I have two lodge caps pretty much identical, is one more correct that the other?
-
Thanks Chaps! Decisions decisions.........

Rear sprocket on order and wheel build well underway I am now considering which tyres to use? Any recommendations? So I have the original Dunlop universal tyres too which I was considering refitting, as display only, but now not sure?
