  1. Great, cheers Ron! After nearly two hours of fettling I came to the same conclusion, another triumph ‘thing’! Still as long as I can carry my Jaffa cakes...... Out of curiosity was the triangular tool box, located between the two rear mudguard stays, an early factory fitting or added later? I am struggling to find one at the moment......
  2. So avoiding putting the troublesome exhaust on I invested some time in fitting the newly restored lower tool box (directly behind the gearbox) one thing that I noticed is the access inside of the tool box, once fitted, is slightly hindered because the lid is restricted by the rear stand spring lug (pillion foot peg anchor) Is this normal? my new 6” saddle springs arrived, so hoping to get them fitted also before Sunday’s trip!!
  3. I am really pleased with the results to date! Just the exhaust namely to go back on......
  4. Low tack Census numbers purchased from https://www.axholmesigns.co.uk/ There is certainly a knack to achieve a good finish....... Ron I took your advice on the small Matt white paint rattle cans, it’s a small world, the eBay link you sent to me is for a shop just 2 miles from my front door! pictures of them stencils now completed.....time consuming but worth the effort!
  5. Cheers Ron, the caps certainly look similar......
  6. Many of the touch ups now done..... the front mudguard now all one colour 🙂
  7. The exhaust and silencer have now had the last few coats of paint, the tool box welded up, prept and painted......
  8. Hi Ron This is the gearbox filler I found? is this the correct one?
  9. Has by chance anyone got a spare, correct, gearbox filler cap? I have seen some new reproduction ones around but extremely expensive.......or maybe I am just tight......
  10. That’s the one! I think I have the same stencilling too!
  11. So today sees the last few snags on the Triumph being completed, the exhaust has been prept with the first few coats of paint applied, correct saddle springs ordered and tool box welded up and primed for a top coat. To finish the job I am going to paint the Census numbers......should I aim for any particular location on the tank? I am not looking I add any other tank decals just the Census number...... I am currently talking with Jan on the baguette carrier.......
  12. Well done on finding the ML front wheel Steve, it’s always nice to find the last missing piece of the jig saw. I was lucky enough to stumble across a NOS James headlamp complete, just need to get around to restoring the bike. It’s either the James of BSA KC10 next.......
  13. Sounds like you can get away tightening the clutch springs down a little further. I hear the 5SW is a flying machine! A little more spritely than my 3SW.....
  14. Thanks Ron. Yes it’s one of Dave Tanns replacements. The 5SW is looking really good! How’s it running? I have checked and double checked the tappets of my 3SW, the exhaust is off ready for painting and the main tool box is repaired ready for painting and fitting. I am hoping to touch up the paint in a few areas and get the Census number on. we have a local Militaria show at the weekend so I hope to ride it there and back which will be circa 40 / 50 miles. A great chance to do another shake down, let’s hope the weather holds! 🤞
  15. A nice piece of replica glass... a tad on the small size though, I should have measured and asked for it a little bigger.....
  16. All sorted, not sure what happen there ........
  17. Little things but the new headlamp glass has now been fitted, it looks good with the Lucas defusa logo!
  18. It will be running like new!! Even if it rattles a little....😉
  19. In light of the journey ahead I am thinking it would be a good idea to check the valve clearances. Is this a doable task without any specialist tools or best left to experts? Its more for piece of mind I guess...
  20. Great! Now I know the timing is right I can get some shake down miles on it. Out of curiosity:- Is there any special prep work I should be doing to the exhaust before repainting? I assume I need to get a good few coats of paint onto it so it’s not to thin? currently I am running straight 40 oil in the engine, I and wondering if 50 might be better and maybe I will get less Valve/general engine noise? All the best Steve
  21. Invaluable advice Ron, thank you! I have done the timing again, a little too advanced, as it kicks back at me when I try and start it but easily rectified with a very small amount of retard on the hand control. I have also.... Added a new plug and gapped it. Stripped and cleaned the carb, all components, apart from the slide are new. Set the needle. The plug is still sooting, so as you have suggested Ron the slide maybe warn, it appears to run pretty well, as for getting hot it’s hard to tell if that’s sorted, I guess really only a gentle ride will tell now. The good news is it appears I don’t need to ride it around now with the air slide half open 🤗 Maybe I just didn’t paint the exhaust properly and that’s why the paint come off......🙂
  22. Thanks Ron. Perfect instructions! I have time it up again, checking and double checking. the symptoms/ running still appear the same. It starts easy hot or cold, the plug is extremely carboned up, the electrode is white on the very tip. bike rides best with half choke, adjusting the carburettor mixture screw doesn't really make a difference under load. advancing the timing leaver worsens the running...... The bike still appears very hot after light riding... I am a little stumped at this moment in time, any suggestions would be most welcomed! Steve
  23. Ron, I have check the ignition timing and it’s appears the contacts are breaking prematurely (in the pistons down stroke) and not 5/16” before top dead centre. Silly question, how do I adjust the timing to where it should be? The manual is really unclear. I assume this is why it’s not running quite right? Strangely it does start well however? F.Y.I the plug is really sooted up and not white (from possibly running hot) any ideas all? Steve
