Great War truck
I am sure that this is a topic that has been covered before, but how do you research the WW2 military history of a relative? Many thanks Tim (too)
Marmite!!
Are they still living? if still living use http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/sar.pdf If deceased (or still alive) you can use the forms here http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/CorporatePublications/PersonnelPublications/ServiceRecords/ The following personnel Service records have been transferred to the National Archive (formerly the Public Record Office) and are available for public access. Royal Navy Officers commissioned prior to 1914 Royal Navy Ratings who enlisted prior to 1924 and First World War records for the Women's Royal Naval Service Royal Marine Officers commissioned prior to 1926 Royal Marine Other Ranks that enlisted prior to 1926 Army Officers commissioned prior to 1920 Army Other Ranks that enlisted prior to 1920 Royal Air Force Officers that served prior to 1922 Royal Air Force Airmen that served prior to 1924 Service records which pre-date those held by the MOD have been transferred to the National Archive and are freely available for public access. However the National Archives is not resourced to carry out searches. Edited April 9, 2009 by Marmite!!
Rick W
Researching WW2 relatives is a lot harder than WW1 research, ironically even harder if they survived. Medal cards are easy enough to view from the NA for a few pounds, and worth getting a copy emailed. The only way of getting the records for sure, unless you are very lucky, is to locate the regimental museum in the county that the regiment was associated with. ie Oxon Bucks regt I would have to go to Aylesbury archives. Another idea is to do an ebay search and try to find the war diaries, very detailed, listing virtually every man and the days actions. Failing ebay try www.abebooks.com , war diaries is the way to go if you know the regt. Any more help let me know.
