Timing marks on Hotchkiss flywheel

Chris Aldous

Question

Hi all

Can anyone tell me what the different marks on a Hotchkiss flywheel mean

When looking from the front (through the small hole) and going clockwise around the flywheel I have a short line, above that is marked "I/C" (although this is closer to a longer line, above that what looks like "u" and a degrees small o" and above that another line with an "A"

On the front pully is one notch and one the small plate behing that 2 lines.

So if i was to time it statically what lines up with what?.

cheers

Chris :-)

Hi Chris

The Hotchkiss timing marks are almost identical to the Willys as you might expect. The engine should be timed on number 1 cylinder thats the front one in this case. As you rotate the engine clockwise there should appear IO which is Inlet open IGN the position at which the points should begin to open, TC top centre of the cylinder that firing followed by EO = exhaust opens . Mine had a version of these and if you rotate the motor and watch the lines in relation to the position of the distributor rotor arm you should be able to work out which line means what.

One thing you should be aware of which I discovered and was confirmed on here. The flywheel can be bolted onto the crankshaft in any position which means when the timing marks appear in sequence they may not be coinciding with number one cylinder on its firing stroke. Mine was timed on number two which caused a lot of non roman language until I worked it out.

To do that I watched the appearance of the timing marks in the window and then as it came up on ignition put my thumb over each of the plug holes in sequence to see which was on compression.

good luck

Hi Centurian

thanks for that

I haven't a s such got a problem knowing how to time the engine...I just wanted confirmation that the marks of the flywheel do correspond exactly to equivalent ones on a MB or GPW.

In the end what I did is try going with long line in the hole...but it didn't run quite right.

I found it easier to have it running, then moved the distributer round until i got the engine running as best as possible at dfferent engine revs...and also to rev up smoothly.

It probably doesn't help using unleaded fuel...which probably means I can't really use any of the marks in the way that they should have been used.

This will all go away when I get the crack in my GPW block sorted and can stick the original engine back in.

Driving to Powder Mills on Saturday was a good test and it ran fine

cheers

Hi Chris

There are 3 marks on the flywheel and these should be:

TC , 5 Degrees and A the A is for Allumage (Ignition).

On the crankshaft pulley should be a mark that allows the timing to be set against the bracket that sits behind the pully with the markings T and A on it.

Hopes this helps
