berna2vm
Hi all. I saw a really nice Humber Pig near Wareham in Dorset today driving about. Does it belong to anyone on the forum ?
fv1609
There is a Mk 2 down that way being resurrected by Eddie who has mainly fire appliances.
berna2vm
Yes it looked very clean like it was freshly painted (or washed):laugh:
fv1609
So was it a Mk 2?
Rover8FFR
So was it a Mk 2? Now there is a question to the unknowing PIG fans
ferret1958uk
I do not like Pigs, but know the difference. Wayne's is a Mk2 and my brother-in-laws is not, but is commonly called a Mk2.
fv1609
Well you two are on the ball. I suppose one has to define what one means by a Mk 2. A real Mk 2 or what the Army erroneously called a Mk 2. Merlin & what don't you like like about Pigs?
ferret1958uk
I do not like the Pigs as I much preferred the truck they were based on. Plus I brushed against an up-armoured pig at a disposal yard years ago and the armoured plate fell off the door. I have always been extremely wary of the way the armour plates were added to the uparmoured pigs and have a concern in my mind that someone will lose a bit of armour on a road with disastrous consequences. My brother-in-laws uparmoured pig has some of the plates removed for that reason. We went over it with a large hammer and lots of plates had fractured welds. Little plates covering hinges were the favourite with two falling off easily when tapped with a club hammer.
fv1609
When I removed the excess armour from my Pig. I found that on one side the welding was quite good but on the other side it could be removed without too much difficulty. This suggests that during Op Bracelet a different team worked on each side of the vehicle. It was reported that the up-armouring process was carried out by people other than trained fitters who were keen to protect our boys from the RPGs then being used against their vehicles. Some 80 people carried out this work which included welders signed on from the labour exchange, clerical staff, a telecomms technician & a medical orderly. Some of the work being done during the 3-day week. Each vehicle kit comprised 818 components. One can see perhaps several decades on how some of these bits could be at risk of falling off. berna2vm
It definately wasn't an uparmoured Pig, and painted in a fairly light shade of green, well of NATO green. I like Pigs and I like FV1600's too. The Pig's bodywork doesn't rot as much though !!!
chambers101
There was a Pig at the Wareham Show i saw some years ago. I remember my dad speaking to him about Bovington. It was very nicely turned out but i can't remember if it was a MK 1 or MK 2.
