jamie meachin
I recently bought i class A uniform at war and peace this year and would like to try and trace the owner or family of the owner. His name was John Stanley Edison and his serial number 35214897. I will attach some pictures of the uniform soon. Any help or information would be much appreciated. M.Rimmer
Hi Jamie, The above is His Enlistment Record from The US National Archives database http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=1&cat=WR26&tf=F&sc=24994,24995,24996,24998,24997,24993,24981,24983&bc=,sl,fd&txt_24994=35214897&op_24994=0&nfo_24994=V,8,1900&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=5551517 I have checked a couple of other databases and it appears he survived the war. If they printed one you might be able to find a copy of the 747th's Unit History, ebay US is probably your best bet. The uniform sounds like a nice find! although I collect uniforms I'm always very warey of those at shows as so many have been made up,had patches and ribbons added etc,but it sounds like you have a good one!. jamie meachin
Hello Thanks for your help. I do think it is a genuine original uniform. From what I been told, some of the insignia on it you would struggle to find now, and if you did, they wouldn't be cheep. I have had a few people look at it, and some of the history I got with the uniform about this guy all ties up. The information I got came from his granddaughter. John trained on Sherman tanks in the states and landed on D-Day+1. He fought in France and was taken out of Sherman's and put on Buffaloes and did the Rhine crossings. He has been awarded the purple heart at some point too. I will try and get a picture of it on here tonight.
M.Rimmer
Hi Jamie, I look forward to seeing the pics!. I don't doubt your uniform is genuine but US uniforms can be a bit of a minefield and some of the fake insignia now is getting very good. I should post some pictures of a small grouping I have to a tanker in the 13th Armoured which includes details of his Sherman "Berlins Fate". Matt.
