Welcome to the forum Bjørn. It would be great to see a few photographs of your vehicles posted on here sometime. Thanks.

The hippo was built in 1945.I know nothing of its history but I,m sure there is some way i can find out .
I'm sure there are forum members with WW11 searchlights.....maybe you should get together !
This thread may help if you would like to research the history of your Hippo.

as far as I am aware, all Mk1 were RHD
Yes, thank you Richard, I'm sure you're right and I think ArtistRifles probably didn't realize we were talking about MK 1's.
-
Were they all left hookers???? I assume so as they would likely be ex BAOR....
Was a Militant Mk 1 left hooker produced ? Because I've never seen, or heard, of one it certainly doesn't mean there weren't any but, that, the BAOR had some is news to me. ArtistsRifles, do you have any more info on this please ? Cheers.

Hi all,
i keep meaning to take these pictures and have finally done so....
the militant (red one )has been here for at least a couple of years.
Enjoy
Thanks for posting Ashley. The Militant looks like a late, 1960 onwards, LWB that has had a much later, possibly ex Bedford 4 X 4, dropside body mounted on it in place of it's original body.
-
Are they up for disposal Ashley - or are they still prized possessions??
Which reminds me - heading home from Exeter last Sat I saw what looked like A Leyland Martian Wrecker off to the side of the motorway - I think between Juncs 24 and 23 of the M5 North bound. There was a fenced off vehicle yard/compound behind it and both were up the top of a small hill. Looked to have been there for quite a while!!
This Martian, and it's location, was referred to sometime ago on the Martian thread. 'Burnt Cab Bob', who owns a Martian recovery himself, tells me the owner will sell for £3,000. I suspect it could actually be bought for a lot less. It's been there years and is now in quite poor condition. :-(

Up dated pics of Ten Ton Annie
A very nice looking Scammell ! Thank you for posting these pictures.

The kink in the handle at both ends is to allow a toggle rope to be attached to either pull or restrain the basket when going down hill.
That makes sense.

Did you see the drive coupling on Ebay for £400 buy it now ! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Scammell-drive-coupling-early-type_W0QQitemZ170306057679QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CommercialVehicleParts_SM?hash=item170306057679&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
You should have brought it for £400 while you had the chance....its now gone up to £750 buy it now. God knows how much it will be by the weekend.:-(

It seems to make manufacture more difficult, and it doesn't make it any easier to manhandle, does it?
I've done, and still do, quite a bit of tube bending and providing this kink, as a handle, would be very simple and only add a few minutes to the production time. One would probably make this bend first, then bend the two corners.
I think the designer added this additional bend to stop one's hand from sliding along the tubular rail at the either end of the cart and to enable the cart to be steered more easily. I can't envisage this cart being towed by a vehicle's tow hitch for the same reason as you.

I am the new owner of the hippo.
I'm pleased to hear it. The Hippo is what I call a proper lorry. I admire you for driving it back to N.I. and not going for the low loader option. I've made similar journeys in lorries I've just bought, and don't know, and can well imagine the sense of relief you must have felt when you finally got home and put the handbrake on. The fact that this Hippo completed the the trip without mishap says quite a lot about the overall condition. Jim, when you have the time, would you like to post a few 'photos of your lorries. What year was the Hippo built and have you been able to find out anything about it's history while it was in the army ? Thanks.

Nice trailer on Ebay ! Shame I have no room !:-D http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320346457973&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123#ebayphotohosting
Andy, you do have room. Just park the trailer where Daisy usually stands and then put Daisy on the trailer. That will take up no more space than just Daisy and you'll then have an upstairs/downstairs restoration project.

While we are discussing these matters.....height indicators.....are they a legal requirement in a pre-1960 vehicle with a traveling height over 9' 10" that is taxed, and used, as a historic vehicle ? I think they do. Does anyone know for certain ? Thanks.

We were talking about going to shows and my concern is a breakdown.
Always a very good idea to have accompanying vehicles capable of towing each other when attending shows. And, always a very good idea to have as many Scammells as possible. Thank you for posting these amazing photographs. So many new screen savers I'm spoilt for choice.:

Quite, mine once drove off with a Martian.
I'm surprised she knew how to drive a flying saucer.:cool2:
-
that she wouldn't mind driving an explorer
I would have thought she might have been satisfied with having a go in the Pioneer. Women, you just can't please them.
-
Pioneer known as 'Sparky' sporting one of those Beck's Bessel carpet cleaners on it's roof while towing a gorgeous living van.

This Hippo is now in N/Ireland drove there without a problem:)
Welcome to the forum and thanks for letting us know. Are you the new owner ?
-
I could give them a call for you to ask about the AEC Militants if you want.
Daniel
Daniel that's a very kind offer. I'm not in need of any Militant parts at the moment, but I would have been interested to see a few photographs of what was there. One of the MV magazines recently had a small feature about AEC Militants in the Van Dam yard. These lorries looked very rotten having been standing in the open for many years. Oh well.

i was doing the rear brakes and oil seals over hauling brake linkages
Oh great, time well spent. A very handsome Scammell !

Welcome to the forum Scottie. I wouldn't have minded if the rain had stayed in Manchester but it's now down here in a big way and has completely spoiled my planned session with the green paint. Djanjo says, "Woff", via the weegie board, from beyond the grave. Poor little ******.

I can supply a prop shaft to replace the Metalastic couplings for £500 no more worries again.. Its nice to be original ..but most of them stay at home..
Contractorman, does your prop shaft have any of the claimed vibration suppressing, and claimed alignment advantages, of the
original metalastic couplings ? From what I can see of your prop shaft in the photograph, it looks much like any other prop shaft I've ever seen. My reason for asking is that, if one can successfully substitute a prop shaft with no intermediate metalastic couplings, it does beg the question as to why Scammell bothered fitting MC in the first place.

You jammy bas**rd ! What fabulous set up ! Next to having the ruddy thing in the living room I think you've created something very, very close to Scammell Heaven. Andy, forget your signature, you've already won the lottery by having both the lovely Hayley, and Daisy, in your life. What more could any man want, or need.
One small complaint. Why have we had to wait so long to see this wonderful photographic record of Daisy's progress ? Anyway, now we all know just how nicely you are situated regarding this project, it's hard not to agree with Jules comments and hope to see less drooling over other people's lorries and more cracking on with the wire brush on your own Scammell.
Thank you for starting this thread. I'm looking forward to many more interesting posts. Good luck.

More taxpayer's money down the drain. This battery charging generator must have cost Mr and Mrs. Drongo quite a few quid at the time and then, subsequently, had very little use. It's a high quality piece of kit with a plywood base, cast aluminum fuel tank, tool kit, spare carburetor, plenty of classy brass fittings and it's very own little canvas tent. Sighted today on a rare appearance outside of it's wooden crate.
