  1. In this case we ( in NZ) have had a number of visitors from Britain to whom the cheque book ruled and with it an attitude of only they are correct, or they know best.

I'm sincerely sorry that these individuals, who sound to me like dealers masquerading as collectors, have left such a poor impression. You are quite right to feel as you do. I would feel the same. Most proper HMV enthusiasts over here are 'ordinary' blokes with everyday jobs (I'm a part-time lorry driver) who are only able to wave empty wallets around such is the financial burden of keeping green machinery on the road. I would like to think that the people I know would be better behaved if they had the privilege of visiting your beautiful country.

  2. There's one of these bodies that has been on a small holding near to Newport in South Wales for some years. It looks as though it may have been used as a shed/store. I drove past yesterday morning and it looks as though this site maybe being cleared........certainly, no sign of the goats that once lived there. If anyone is interested in following this up then PM me and I'll do my best to describe it's location.

  3. What happened to the Albion under the arch?

I'm sorry, I've no idea. It had been converted to a recovery lorry and was in company with a few other ex.WD vehicles. I was running a HGV driving school at the time and spotted the vehicles while being driven around by one of the punters in our clapped out Bedford TK.

  4. I'll be able to get some work done every week and post the results on here.

I wish you would. Please include some more of that beautiful scenery in some of your pix.

I wanted to buy one of these Albions that had been stored under a railway arch in the London docklands many years ago and well before Canary Wharf. I think they're really nice.

  5. Unfortunately many folk also are of the opinion that restoration work can only be undertaken in the UK.

Really ? What is the evidence for making that statement ? I've never heard it said that non-Poms are, somehow, less entitled or less able, to undertake restorations. One only has to go online and see the many fabulous collections around the world containing beautifully restored historic vehicles of all kinds. If you want to see how highly skilled non-Poms are check out Kiwi-Indian.

but unfortunately the perception is that so many English cannot see vintage collections establish outside from their own country.

This maybe the perception but the reality is that many thousands, yes Doug, thousands of collectable vehicles of all kinds, Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Vincents, Bough Superiors etc, etc, etc have been exported from the UK to international collectors in recent decades. Just a few months ago a Bugatti Type 57 left these shores after being here since the 1930's. Two Thornycraft Antars were imported into Australia recently and another is, I believe, being restored in Canada. It's also true to say that there is everything from Trabants to Russian Tanks are in UK collections. It's an well established international trade. What's wrong with that ? Just wait until billionaire Chinese truck manufacturers decide they'd like to start a collection of vintage trucks from around the world. Here's a link to an American collection that was posted on this forum by Younggun sometime ago.

Images are shown by members of the forum of vehicles about the world, but little is covered of collections else where in the world. There must collections in South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

There are collections in many different parts of the world and, whenever possible, members of this forum do post links.

Below is a link to East European site that I posted on this forum sometime ago that you may have missed. There have been similar links posted by other members.

I recently asked a member of this forum in New Zealand if he would kindly post a few photographs, and a brief report, of the next Historic Military Vehicle show that he attends. We would all, where ever we live, find that very interesting. Maybe you would be kind enough to do the same. (And NOT because we Poms want to see what's left there so that can come and grab it !)

  6. Hi,

Can anyone help with information on the inside of the bed of a AEC Matador currently under restoration?

Welcome to the forum Sigve. I'm sorry that I don't have a photograph of the interior of a Matador gun tractor but I thought you might be interested to see this picture of an artillery body mounted on a prototype AEC Militant Mk 1 in the early 1950's. Although, slightly different to what was eventually built on production Militants, the inside layout maybe very similar to what your Matador originally had. This photograph shows how much structure is needed to provide seating for the gun crew together with stowage lockers.

As you will know, relatively few Matadors have survived with original, intact bodies but I'm sure some have. Let's hope someone can post some pictures of what the inside of your body would have looked like......... I'd be interested to see them myself. Are you a member of the AEC Society ? What information do they have ?

It looks as though you are engaged in a fascinating restoration project. Would you like to consider starting a blog as I'm sure there would be a lot of interest if you did. The link below will take you to right section of the forum. Cheers.

  7. Oh yeh! the tinted specs fell straight into place!

Have a chat with Phil of the Mat & Milly Club he's very knowledgeable, and enthusiastic, with a good idea of the spares situation. I've PM'd you his 'phone number. I'm sure other forum members, who are Matador owners, will be able to leave more helpful posts than mine in answer to your request. Good luck.

Well, it doesn't sound as far gone as this one.

  8. Hope you like her......

Ewok, I certainly do like her. What a beautiful motorcycle. It's superbly equipped and a real credit to you. I look forward to seeing more pictures of this lovely BSA when you have the time. The 'photo you've just posted is now my screen saver. Cheers.

  9. Welcome to the forum Rob. And thanks for posting that great 'photo of your LR driving through....er....well.... whatever it is....... I hope you didn't have to get out and push. There's a section for trailers if you would like to post pix of your trailers and plenty of interest in LR's on the forum.

  10. next time i have the sheets off the back off mine gps i will take some pics of the recovery gear mine has on the back from memory mine has 1 draw bar 1 towing ploe 1 long A frame 1 short A frame and a towing distance A frame along with two wire ropes for the ground anchors .

Younggun, have you got a T-bar as shown stowed centrally on this Scammell ?

I've never actually seen one but they must be, or have been, around. Thanks.

Not a clear picture but it's the only one I've got. There must be a huge amount of stress where the bars meet and form the ' T '.

  11. I have been looking around Europe for a new toy, something 6 wheel drive and green.

Welcome to the forum Brodie. Is there a particular type of 6 x 6 that you have your eye on ? If you can narrow it down a bit I'm sure there are people on this forum who could make suggestions as to the best place to look. Buying in the UK maybe cheaper than buying in the Euroweaslezone due to the exchange rate. Cheers.

  12. There was a Militant tipper on the show scene for a short time in the Eighties with a scow end body, similar if not the same, as the Aveling Barford (LD55) Dumptruck that was in army service. I think it may have come from one of the military trials establishments, Chertsey or similar.

Richard, thanks for mentioning that. I wouldn't be surprised if the Militant you refer to left the show scene and was put back to work. If it did, it wouldn't be the only Militant Mk 1, I can think of two, that were thought to be safely in preservation but were 'lost'.

  13. I saw 'Martins' tipper, it wasn't a genuine one, just a 'normal' Militant someone had put a scow ended tipper body onto.

    What Albion is Will's?

You Rotter ! All these years I've been dreaming about this Martin's Militant tipper only to find out it's not a proper one. You could have broken the news a bit more sensitively. Plan 'B' is to steal Will's tipper one night.....but only after he's restored it.laugh.gif

  14. I have a couple of pics which ill try and scan onto pc and post on here.

Loads of old pics on Facebook..look on Royal Corps of Transport group.

It would be very interesting to see any more 'photos you may have. I'm still looking to match the two Constructors in the pix you posted with any I know of that have survived. Thanks also for the Facebook tip. woohoo1.gif

  15. Yes, they're very nice!

I've never seen any in preservation 6 X 6, I've only ever seen a couple in a yard once.

I wonder where they all went?

I still have the telephone number of someone called Martin who was selling a Militant tipper for £800 near Heathrow many years ago. I think that like most tippers, they got worked to death, and then scrapped. That's what makes Will's Albion, with it's super cool headlight plinths, so unusual.
